There are two major types of strokes: Ischaemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke. The ischaemic stroke represents about 80% of stroke cases and its cause by blood clot that blocks blood supply to the brain. This usually happens in one two ways:
* Embolic stroke: A blood clot that has formed somewhere else in the body travels through the blood stream to the brain and then gets struck in a small blood vessel thereby blocking flow.
* Thrombotic stroke: A clot forms in the blood vessel that is clogged in fatty deposits. This deposits usually clog major blood vessels in the neck area( which is compounded by clots)and so severely reduced blood flow to the brain.
The hemorrhagic stroke is caused by a damaged blood vessel in the brain that then leaks blood into brain. This types of stroke accounts for about 20% of all percent of all strokes and it usually happens too in one of two ways.
* in the intracerebral hemorrhage that occurs,a blood vessel in the brain bursts and it spills blood into the brain tissue, damaging surrounding cells which are thus deprived of blood for their normal functioning.
* subarachnoid hemorrhage occurs when bleeding starts in the blood vessel on or near the surface of the brain and spills blood into the space between there and the skull.
