•Bodies work for integrity of polls

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Imo, Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu, has begun the movement of sensitive materials to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices across the 27 Local Councils in readiness for this weekend’s polls in the state.Carried out between 8.am. and 9.am. amid tight security, the event was witnessed by accredited political party agents, observers and journalists.

After the brief inspection of the items, was their onward transmission to the councils under strict security. Ezeonu informed that the materials would later be moved to the 106 registration area centres (RACs)/ collation centres today, adding that they would be sorted and taken to the 4,758 voting points thereafter. He said the RACs and collation centres had been activated, stating that officials and ad hoc workers would resume early at the polling booths.

Also, the electoral umpire had commenced same exercise in Plateau State.Ballot papers and result sheets were shown everybody yesterday, including party officials and agents, to indicate INEC’s readiness for free, fair and credible elections.

Addressing the stakeholders, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Madam Halilu Pai, stated: “You can see the political parties are here, the security personnel are here, and the press and other stakeholders are all here. We are going to now share these things local government by local government. And we intend to start from the farthest distance.”For sake of integrity, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has launched the Election Analysis Centre (EAC) to check fake news.

Its director, Idayat Hassan, told newsmen in Abuja that the centre would be a “one-stop shop where a team of reputable analysts would provide accurate and real-time analysis of events in the build-up to the polls as well as the election day and post-election period in a more captivating, enriching and systematic manner.”

Besides, YIAGA Africa is to deploy 3,906 observers for the presidential and national assembly polls. The group said it would have mobile and stationary observers in all of the nation’s 36 states and 774 council areas.In a statement, it indicated readiness to conduct a parallel vote tabulation as obtains globally.
