Nigeria Elections: Military Reacts To Ipob Sit-at-home Order by Glory2019: 01:39 pm On 2 Feb 2019
The Nigerian military on Thursday frowned
at the call for boycott of the general
elections by the Indigenous People of
Biafra (IPOB).
General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, Chief
of Defence Staff, in a statement, warned
that no form of intimidation or harassment
would be tolerated on election days.
He said: “Members of the public are also
advised to disregard the call to stay at
home on the day of the election being
circulated in some parts of the country.
“The stay-at-home leaflets being circulated
and similar on-line messages are part of
the handiwork of mischief makers who are
bent on scuttling the process and should be
ignored.
“I want to assure the general public that
the security services are prepared to
support the Police to ensure safe conduct
of the elections.”
Meanwhile, Director-General of the Voice of
Nigeria, VON, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, has
said members of IPOB were a fringe
portion of the entire populace and as such
would not be a threat to Saturday’s polls.
Okechukwu, who spoke in Enugu on
Thursday during a Southeast rally for
President Muhammadu Buhari of the All
Progressives Congress, APC, said such
existed in every democracy.
Okechukwu said, “People who are saying
we should not participate in the election
are in the fringe.
“If we were listening to them, why are the
people spending their money, their strength
running up and down to become one thing
or the other.
“So, please, we should discountenance the
fringe elements, they exist in every society,
even in the churches.”
