Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and many will give everything to play for the team but for Angel Di Maria he had to leave after a year following a miserable stint under former manager, Louis van Gaal.

Ahead of PSG’s clash against the Red Devils in the Champions League next month, the Argentine has revealed why he flopped at Old Trafford.

Bought for £67.5m from Real Madrid, Manchester United thought they had hit the jackpot when they purchased Di Maria back in 2014. But the Argentinian only went on to make 32 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, scoring four goals and registering 12 times.

PSG landed Di Maria just 12 months after he arrived at Old Trafford. And the midfielder clearly doesn’t look back at his time in Manchester fondly, throwing shade at his season spent under Louis van Gaal.

“We’ve got games before that one,” he told France Bleu when asked about facing Manchester United again. “They’ve changed manager, and they haven’t lost since, but we must only think about us and only us!

“If we do everything the way we’re meant to, it will all go well. I only spent a year there. It wasn’t the best time of my career, or should I say I wasn’t allowed to have the best time of my career. There were complications with the manager at the time, but thanks to God, I was able to come to PSG and show once more what I could do.”

This isn’t the first time Di Maria has discussed his United exit. Speaking back in 2016, the former Real Madrid man explained why he decided to leave the club.

“It’s not nice to say certain things, but it’s more that they didn’t let me settle properly than I couldn’t settle. I left and that team are still playing the same way,” he said. “Out of the European competitions, far from being champions of the Premier League.

“I don’t think it was my fault or the fault of my team mates. Every time I was given the opportunity, I did all I could but it didn’t work out as I hoped. So I decided to leave, not only to be happy but to win things.

“I started a game in one position then the next game in another. I scored goals playing in one position, then suddenly the next game I was picked to play in a different position.”
