Nigeria had booked their France 98'
World Cup ticket in their penultimate
match against Kenya with a 3-0 victory
over Kenya.
The last game was a mere formality
against Guinea far away in Conakry
where the former African champions
played for bragging rights.
But the French technical adviser
decided to call it quits after much
pressure from the then Nigeria Football
Association (NFA).
The governing body had no choice but
to employ an interim coach which
Monday Sinclair was the only
experienced coach at hand and was the
eighth indigenous coach to handle the
national team.
The former Sharks of Port Harcourt boss
(now Rivers United) was in charge of
the national team between 1997 and
1999 before and after Bora Milutinovic
was hired.
Sinclair had discovered talents like
Richard Owubokiri, Benjy Nziakor,
Peter Rufai, Finidi George, Taribo West,
Emmanuel Ebiede, Davidson Owumi,
Idah Peterside, Binebi Numa, Imama
Amapakabo and many others.
The legendary Nigerian footballer and
manager has also coached different
clubs in the local league including Niger
Tornadoes, Enugu Rangers, Heartland,
Bayelsa United and much later Nzalang
Nacional in Equatorial Guinea.
