Crime / Nigerian Man And His Deadly Gang Members Captured After Police Chase In London ( by Emmaronad2(m): 07:19 am On 2 Feb 2019
Four men including a Nigerian man who threatened police officers with a firearm during a vehicle pursuit in east London have been convicted, yesterday, Wednesday, 30 January, at the Old Bailey.

Lekan Akinsoji, 21, was found guilty of possession of firearm with intent to endanger life and conspiracy to commit GBH. Nathaniel Lewis, 23, was found guilty of possession of firearm with intent to endanger life and conspiracy to commit GBH.

Darnell Joseph-Newill, 21, was found guilty of possession of firearm with intent to endanger life and conspiracy to commit GBH. Troy Ifill, 22, was found guilty of possession of firearm with intent to endanger life and conspiracy to commit GBH.

All four men will be sentenced on Friday, February 8.

On 26 July 2018 at approximately 22:45hrs, police were called to reports of men in the area brandishing a firearm.

Armed officers made their way to the area and spotted a BMW Series 1 matching the description of the car on Cathall Road, Leytonstone. After following the vehicle for a short time, the car made off. Officers illuminated their blue lights and sounded their sirens indicating for the car to stop, but it did not.

The occupants of the vehicle brandished a firearm at officers in the marked police vehicle. During the pursuit the officers used a specialist pursuit tactic, making contact with the BMW, causing damage to both vehicles.

The BMW did not stop and it continued at high speed along Odessa Road. During this part of the pursuit the officers in the ARV believed they saw the gun pointed at them again.

The pursuit ended when the BMW was blocked by an oncoming vehicle in Bective Road. The driver of the BMW fled the scene whilst the other occupants of the car were detained by police. All the men were wearing face coverings, gloves and one man wore a clown mask. Two of the men were carrying lock knives.

Officers discovered a shortened shotgun, a large Zombie-style knife and a Zombie-style axe in the car. A hunting knife was found under the car. A can of petrol together with the original registration plate belonging to the car were also found in the back of the vehicle.

It was later established that the car had been stolen during a burglary. The firearm was examined by a forensic firearms expert and identified as a single-barrelled shotgun, loaded with a 12-bore cartridge.

All four men were found to be gang members and had produced a number of ‘drill’ music videos, including videos bragging about gang activity and serious criminality.

World Politics / Pdp Lawmaker Defects To Apc In Ekiti, Says Buhari Must Win by Emmaronad2(m): 07:14 am On 2 Feb 2019
A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker in the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Olanrewaju Olayanju, has defected to the All Progressives Congress(APC), citing cases of division and lack of decorum in his former party to justify his action.

Speaking with journalists in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, Olanrewaju stated that he took the action because the PDP is no longer a vehicle under which the dream of making his constituents better can be realised.

He was accompanied by the Speaker of the House of assembly, Hon Adeniran Alagbada, the State chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barrister Paul Omotoso and his Deputy, Hon Sola Elesin.

He described the suspension slammed on seven members of the assembly, including himself, by the PDP State Working Committee as an exercise in futility, saying only the National Working Committee can exercise such power.

The Gboyega Oguntuase-led SWC had last week suspended the lawmakers for alleged anti-party activities.

Olanrewaju, the chairman, House Committee on Environment, said: “I was not coerced by anybody to join APC. I joined on my own.

” When I wanted to start politics, I began with PDP and now that the party had shattered, I have to move to a better party”.

He said he did not join APC because of the fight over return ticket, declaring that he was no longer interested in representing a party that has been personalised by an individual.

“I have reflected deeply on the whole situation and I have informed my constituency that my interest and the interest of my people can no longer be achieved in the PDP.

” The party is now in disarray, no leader to rally the party together. The leaders have destroyed the party through naked use of powers. The party is fictionalised and some leaders are saying members should vote for opposition candidates.

“Also, since governor Kayode Fayemi came on board, he has initiated projects that make people happy. On this strength, I, Hon Olanrewaju Olayanju hereby declare my total loyalty to the APC led government and the party with immediate effect”.

The lawmaker added that he will work assiduously for the success of President Muhammadu Buhari and other APC candidates in the coming elections.

In his response, the Speaker said the fact that former governor Ayodele Fayose campaigned against the senatorial candidate of the party in the south district, Senator Biodun Olujimi, it was enough reason for people to leave the PDP.

He said he has no reason to declare Olanrewaju’s seat vacant, saying he has not breached any law to warrant such.

” When I defected to APC even when Fayose was still the governor, my seat was not declared vacant. Once a party can no longer protect your interest, the best one can do is to go to a better party.

“Our colleague has bid the PDP, the land of Egypt bye bye and he will no longer return there”.

Justifying the defection, the State Chairman of the party, Omotoso said cross carpeting is allowed in the legislative arm, saying all he needed for him to justify his action was a proof of division in the former party, PDP.

“As we speak, we have Fayose’s and Olujimi’s faction. The party has not recovered from its crisis. It is not a provision of the law that there must be a secretariat of the other faction before you can decamp.

” The constitutional provision as to what constitutes a division in a party was ambiguous. It doesn’t mean that a faction of a party must have a Secretariat because division can come in diverse ways “.

Business/Investments / Bad Roads, Rising Vehicle Costs Creating Logistics Challenge For Real Sector by Emmaronad2(m): 09:10 am On 1 Jan 2019
Lagos Chamber of Commerce & industries, Alausa, Lagos,

Citing the need to review its backward integration strategy, operators in the real sector have stated that lack of good road infrastructure and high cost of vehicles continue to take a toll on the economy, especially in the logistics sector.
Specifically, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), and the Lagos Chamber of commerce and Industry (LCCI), urged the government to look into the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP), with emphasis on review of its backward integration policies to encourage local production and infrastructural gaps.

According to MAN, there is a need to reduce the cost of moving goods from ports to the factories.Indeed, budgeted capital allocation to the development of transportation infrastructure stands at N194.24 billion, indicating 26.2% reduction from N263.10 billion allocation in 2018.

MAN added that the N80.22 billion allocation for counterpart funding for railway projects (Lagos-Kano; Calabar-Lagos; Ajaokuta-Itakpe-Aladja; Port Harcourt-Maiduguri, etc), and the N27.12 billion allocation for rehabilitation of rail tracts and general maintenance/running of the rails system are critical.

“Global evidence has shown that no country in the world had ever fully industrialized without a robust railway system. No mention however is made of the need to dredge the various ports outside Lagos State to decongest Tin Can and Wharf ports and reduce the cost of moving goods from ports to the factories”, MAN noted.

On his part, the Director-General of the LCCI, Muda Yusuf, in a position paper, noted that the cost of vehicles had risen beyond the reach of most citizens and corporate bodies, as the import substitution strategy that thrives in the context of high domestic value addition failed to address the issues.

Indeed, the automobile sector was hit by over 100 percent currency depreciation over the last five years and an import levy of 50% on new cars and 25% on used vehicles and commercial vehicles was imposed on operators to reduce importation. This is in addition to the import duty of 20% on new cars and 10% on used vehicles and commercial vehicles.

The LCCI added that the high cost of vehicles has taken a toll on the economy, from a logistics point of view, as all aspects of the nation’s economic and social lives had been negatively impacted by the situation.

This according to the LCCI is because over 90% of the country’s freight and human movements are done by road, which implies heavy dependence on cars, commercial buses and trucks.“The auto policy in its present form is most inappropriate for an economy that is heavily dependent on road transportation.

“Other implications of the Auto Policy for the economy include high transportation cost resulting from the prohibitive cost of vehicles largely because of the high import tariff and levy; increase in smuggling resulting from the high import duty and levy as well as the huge duty differential with our neighbouring countries; huge loss of customs revenue as vehicle imports from official channels drop and smuggling increases”, Yusuf added.

The LCCI however recommended that government should give further tax concessions and waivers to the assembly plants in the spirit of the auto policy, adding that semi-knocked down (SKD) should all attract 5% duty to incentivize domestic vehicle assembly.

“Other incentives for assembly plants and tyre industries for acquisition of machineries and equipment should be retained as contained in the automotive policy. Similar incentives should be extended to the local production of vehicle spare parts.

“Patronage of locally assembled vehicles by the government and its agencies should be more rigorously encouraged and enforced. Vehicle purchase finance facility at single digit should be put in place to boost demand for automobiles”, the LCCI advocated.

Sports / Transfer: Barcelona Confirm Suarez Is Leaving For Arsenal by Emmaronad2(m): 07:48 am On 1 Jan 2019
Barcelona boss, Ernesto Valverde, has confirmed that Denis Suarez is close to joining Arsenal.

“Denis is about to go to Arsenal, there is not much left to make it official.

“We hope he does well. He has always acted with dedication and we are happy with him,” Valverde said.

Suarez has renewed his contract with the club until 2021 and will now be allowed to sign for Arsenal on loan this January, Marca reports.

There will be an option to make the deal permanent in the summer for €25m.

The Gunners have been exploring the possibility of signing the 25-year-old on loan during the January window, as they are unable to spend money on big transfer fees.

Arsenal offered a €2million (£1.7m) loan fee, but could not agree on the inclusion of a clause, which would require them to permanently sign the midfielder at the end of the season.

Barca looked to get around Arsenal’s refusal to agree on a compulsory right to buy clause by allowing Suarez to leave on loan, but on the condition that he signed a new contract.

Food/Diets / We Are Evolving Solutions To Solve Health, Food Problems In Nigeria by Emmaronad2(m): 07:38 am On 1 Jan 2019
Senior Bayer Representative & Chief Financial Officer – West & Central Africa, Oliver Gierlichs, and Managing Director, Bayer Middle Africa Ltd, and Head of Marketing & Sales PH/CH Nigeria, Dr. Mohammed Jimoh, in this interview with ADELOWO ADEBUMITI explain how their firm would bring its innovative and effective products to the Nigerian market as well as enable the country to become more self-sufficient in providing high-quality food to a growing population.

In 2015, Bayer AG returned to Nigeria after divesting from the country’s economy for 22 years. What areas of your business focus do you think would be of benefit to the Nigerian people?
Bayer is a research and development (R&D)-based life science company that is active in the areas of crop protection and seeds, the area of pharmaceuticals (prescription drugs) and Over-the-Counter (OTC) products, including vitamins, analgesics and anti-allergies.

Nigeria is diversifying its economy with a lot of attention on agriculture, which is specifically one of your core areas of business interest. How do you think your presence here would aid in improving lives in the country?
We are active in three areas. Our crop science division offers a wide range of products (insecticides, herbicides and fungicides, as well as seeds. Our experience of more than 100 years and the broad product portfolio enables us to provide tailor-made solutions to farmers. Those solutions help farmers to increase substantially their yields, to grow safe and healthy crops and to increase their revenues.

The pharmaceutical branch includes new inventions that help to cure diseases that have been unmet in the past. This covers therapeutic areas like cardiovascular and oncology. Bayer is also a leading company in hormonal contraceptives enabling women in their family planning.

Finally, our consumer health area includes products for affordable self-medication including painkillers, anti-allergies or vitamins for healthy and balanced nutrition.

Apart from your products in the market, what other areas will your organisation be willing to support government’s economic diversification initiatives?
Bayer is active in several forms. Some of them are yet to come; such as our food-chain initiative. However, a concrete example where we are supporting farmers is the stewardship. This means that we train and form farmers to better use crop protection products and beyond best-practice in agriculture in order to maximise yields and quality while reducing environmental impact at the same time.

With your line of businesses, you are playing in highly competitive sectors, what stands you out from your competitors?
First, like I said earlier, we are R&D-based. With more than €4.5b of R&D budget and more than 14, 000 scientists, we are a leading company in our respective areas since we develop products for unmet therapeutic areas and against crop diseases, where there have been no prior solutions.

Another important factor that should be stated is that Bayer is an employer, and in looking for long-term solutions, we develop our staff over time and provide long-term perspectives. All these are based on our values, which determine our partnerships with stakeholders on all levels.

Part of your mission is to improve people’s lives and contribute to society today and in the future. How do you intend to achieve this in Nigeria?
Our corporate mission is ‘Science for a Better Life.’ Bayer with its products helps to solve problems that are at the heart of society – health and food. Bringing our innovative and proven effective products to the Nigerian market will help people to live longer and healthier lives and enable Nigeria to become more self-sufficient in providing high-quality food to a growing population. Beyond this, Bayer’s investment in Nigeria shows our long-term commitment by creating employment, developing and training our staff and by being a reliable partner to our stakeholders.

What does the Nigerian economy stand to gain from innovative companies like yours?
Bayer brings the latest innovation to Nigeria in all areas. In Corp Science, it improves Nigerian products and makes them more competitive compared to foreign producers, no matter if they are meant to be exported or have to persist against imported crops.

In the healthcare areas, it saves lives from diseases that have had no solutions in the past. To improve medical practice we conduct several trainings every month on our medicines and its appropriate use to treat and prevent important diseases.

In general, when using Bayer products, there is a traceability and guarantee of quality standards, which is not the case for most generics. Beyond this, Bayer brings in his expertise being an employer of choice and developing its staff with latest knowledge and development. Finally, Bayer is a partner in communities where we work and reside. As such, we deploy programmes in the context of our corporate social engagement.

How involved is the German government in this investment in Nigeria?
Germany and its institutions have always been a partner to us. It provided a high degree of support when Bayer established the legal entity back in 2014. Since we maintain close contact with it and it support us in our further development.

There is a wide range of programmes that Bayer can make use of and that we decide to use when there are benefits in line with our strategy.

Where do you see the industry in the next five years?
With regards to the healthcare industry, we hope for a better regulation of the distribution of medicines, reducing the influx of counterfeit and unregulated products. We also hope that the government finds ways to establish a system of healthcare provision and reimbursement for all Nigerians. When it comes to the agrobusiness, the just mentioned topic of better regulation applies as well. It will be important that the governmental institutions and actors in the area of agro support this development by further implementing a clear and transparent frame for regulations. We will certainly see a growing awareness for high quality seeds and crop protection products, as the farmers need to feed a fast-growing population.

Nigeria, on its move to become a major economic player, also deserves better and more innovative products instead of sticking with generics and staying behind. We hope that the government shares this view and values companies that are capable to provide innovation to the country.

Health / 14.3m Nigerians Use Hard Drugs For Non-medical Purposes — Fg by Emmaronad2(m): 07:15 am On 1 Jan 2019
ABUJA— FEDERAL Government has said an estimated 14.3 million adults in Nigeria used hard drugs for non-medical purposes within the past one year.

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, disclosed this, yesterday, in Abuja at the unveiling of the report of the first National Survey on Drug Use and Health to be conducted in Nigeria.

He said some of the findings of the survey are striking and alarming; hence, call for concerted efforts to mitigate the negative consequences of the increasing use of psychoactive substances on the health and security of the nation.

According to him, data collected from 38,850 respondents in the household and 9,344 high risk drug users nationwide suggests that the prevalence of past year’s drug use in Nigeria is more than twice the global average of 5.6 per cent.

He said: “In Nigeria, one in seven persons aged 15 – 64 years had used a drug other than tobacco and alcohol in the past year. The past year’s prevalence of any drug use is estimated at 14.4 per cent, corresponding to 14.3 million people who had used a psychoactive substance for non-medical purpose.

“Cannabis is the most commonly used drug. An estimated 10.6 million people had used cannabis in the past year. The average age of initiation of cannabis use among the general population is 19 years.

“There is also a considerable level of non-medical use of prescription opioids such as tramadol and cough syrup containing codeine and dextromethorphan.”

Ehanire further said people who inject drugs, PWIDs, also constituted a sizeable proportion of high risk drug users, stressing that pharmaceutical opioids, followed by cocaine and heroin were the commonly injected drugs.

While noting that among every four drug users in Nigeria, one is a woman, he added that one in five persons who had used a hard drug in the past year suffered from drug user disorders.

Crime / My Mother Told Me To Poison My Father - Young Boy Makes Shocking Claim In Court by Emmaronad2(m): 04:46 am On 1 Jan 2019
A 10-year-old boy on Monday told a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan that his mother asked him to put poison in his father’s food and bathing water, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports.

Adenike Ayodele, the mother of the boy, had petitioned the court to dissolve her 15-year-old marriage to her estranged husband, Adeshina, on grounds of irresponsibility and battery.

In his testimony, the boy told the court that his mother gave him a nylon which contained some powdery substance which she instructed him to pour in his father’s food as well as his bathing water.

“After giving me the substance, my mother warned me never to tell my father or anyone about it.

“However, I love my father and I told him because I never wanted any bad thing to happen to him,” he said.

Earlier, Adenike, who lives at Agbaje area of Orita-challenge, Ibadan, had told the court that Adeshina had turned her into a punching bag.

“At any slight opportunity, my husband beats me.

“For 14 years, Adeshina has not stopped beating me and the last one he did was the reason why I made up my mind to call it quits with him.

“On that day, I requested for money for the upkeep of the children and Adeshina gave me a beating resulting in blood dripping from my two ears.

“He also broke one of my legs that day and I am still experiencing the pain till today.

“Again, on December 5, 2018, Adeshina came to attack me in my shop because he was not happy that my business is doing well despite his inhumane treatment.

“Then, he threatened to ruin my business by all means and what followed was the burgling of my shop two Sundays ago.

“Now, all my means of livelihood have been burgled and I got him apprehended but without any positive result,” Adenike said.

In his response, Adeshina consented to the petitioner’s request for termination of the marriage, but denied all the allegations leveled against him.

“My lord, I had on different occasions given Adenike the children’s school fees.

“Aside that, when one of our children urgently needed a surgery to be performed on him, I gave Adenike the required money for the surgery, but she spent it on herself.

“I sent her to school to acquire NCE, but she told the school management that she is a widow which means that I am nothing to her.

“If I give her money to buy anything at home, she doesn’t put my name on the receipt.

“Worst of all, Adenike told our second child to put poison in my food and bathing water, but, the child revealed the secret to me and I informed my relatives about it,” Adeshina said.

All the witnesses that testified corroborated Adeshina’s submissions.

The petitioner, who was unruly during the court’s proceedings, was asked by the President of the court, Chief Ademola Odunade, to bring her parents to the court.

He said the operation is designed to “maintain law and order ahead of the forthcoming general election as well as curb criminality in the state.”

The governor urged “all residents of the state to go about their lawful activities without fear as the exercise is designed to reassure members of the public on their safety before, during and after the forthcoming general election in the state.”

Weird News / Indonesia Floods, Landslides Death Toll Climbs To 59 by Emmaronad2(m): 12:23 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Indonesian rescuers evacuate residents from their homes in Makassar on January 24, 2019 as heavy rain and strong winds pounded the southern part of Sulawesi island. YUSUF WAHIL / AFP
Floods and landslides in Indonesia have killed at least 59 people, the government said Friday after heavy rain pounded Sulawesi island and forced thousands to flee their homes.

“I’ve never seen something this bad — this is the worst,” Syamsibar, head of South Sulawesi’s disaster mitigation agency, told AFP, adding that 25 people were still missing.

Lashed by the heavy rain, rivers swelled and burst their banks, inundating dozens of communities in 11 districts of southern Sulawesi. Parts of the provincial capital Makassar have also been affected.

Gowa district suffered the heaviest casualties, with 44 people found dead, said Syamsibar, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

Some 3,400 people were evacuated from their homes and given refuge in schools, mosques and tents.

Rescuers and residents waded through streets filled with waist-deep water, some carrying their possessions above their heads.

“I couldn’t save all my belongings, my house was swept away,” Makassar resident Ayu Fiskarina told AFP.

Authorities say floodwaters are receding but the impact of the disaster has ranged far and wide, damaging houses, government buildings, schools and bridges.

“All the locals in this area have been evacuated to the mosque, except for (a) woman who refuses to leave her house because she’s scared her belongings could be looted,” said Makassar police officer Ardal.

The death toll stood at 30 on Thursday evening.

Landslides and floods are common in Indonesia, especially during the monsoon season between October and April, when rains lash the vast Southeast Asian archipelago.

Last year, flash floods and landslides killed at least 22 people in several districts across Sumatra island, while a dozen died when an avalanche of mud and rock cascaded down a steep slope in central Java, Indonesia’s main island.

In 2016, also in Central Java, about 50 people died when heavy downpours sent torrents of water, mud and rock into villages.

Indonesia is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth, straddling the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are common.

In December, more than 400 were killed in a volcano-triggered tsunami in western Java, while thousands died in a quake-tsunami disaster around the city of Palu on Sulawesi island in September.

Lombok, an island next to Bali, was rocked by earthquakes in the summer that killed more than 500 and sparked a mass exodus of foreigners from the tropical paradise.

Sports / Obafemi Martins by Emmaronad2(m): 12:06 pm On 1 Jan 2019

Obafemi Akinwunmi Martins (born 28 October 1984) is a Nigerian footballer who plays as a forward. He is known for his speed on the ball. After leaving Nigeria for Italy at age 16, he has since played for a number of top-division clubs around Europe. He began his senior career in 2002 at the Italian Serie A club Inter Milan, before moving to the English Premier League club Newcastle in 2006, and then the German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg in 2009. Having joined Russian Premier League side Rubin Kazan in July 2010, they loaned him to Birmingham City in January 2011.

In club football, Martins has won the Italian Serie A title, the Italian Cup (twice), and the Italian Super Cup, all with Inter. With Birmingham he scored the winning goal in the 2011 Football League Cup Final. He has played European football with Inter, Newcastle and Wolfsburg, winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup with Newcastle. His highest scoring league seasons so far have seen him score 11 goals in the 2004–05 Serie A, and 17 in both the 2006–07 English Premier League and 2014 MLS. In international football, Martins has been in the Nigerian squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2006, 2008 and 2010, and for the FIFA World Cup in 2010. He played for Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer from 2013 to 2015, scoring 40 goals, before moving on to China.

Martins had two brothers who also played football professionally. His elder brother, Oladipupo Martins, played for Reggiana, Partizan and Innsbruck before retiring from football in 2009 due to heart problems. He died on 8 August 2011 of a suspected heart attack in Lagos, Nigeria.Martins' younger brother is John Ronan Martins. The name "Obafemi" translates literally to "the king loves me" in the Yoruba language.[

Club career
Martins joined the local football club F.C. Ebedei, having been scouted by manager Churchill Oliseh while playing on the streets of his hometown. After a year with the club, Italian Serie C side A.C. Reggiana made a move for the player. After a two-month trial, Martins and fellow Ebedei teammate Stephen Makinwa signed youth contracts with the club in 2000. His first season in Italy saw Martins break into the first team squad, and later in the year Serie A sides Perugia and Inter Milan made offers for the forward.

Inter Milan
Martins was signed by Inter Milan in 2001 for a €750,000 transfer fee, and in his first season he scored 23 goals for the youth team, helping them to win the Campionato Nazionale Primavera in 2001–02 season. His form for the youth side led to his first-team league debut the following season, starting in a match against Parma on 22 December 2002 which was won by Inter 2–1.

Martins didn't become a regular member of the first team squad until the 2002–03 season. During this season he was given his first UEFA Champions League appearance by manager Héctor Cúper, entering as a subsitute against his future employers, Newcastle United, at St James' Park. He scored his first Champions League goal in a match against Bayer 04 Leverkusen to secure Inter's place in the quarter finals; footage of his celebratory somersaults were subsequently used by UEFA to advertise the following season's competition. He scored again in the semi-final match against Inter's arch-rivals Milan, but couldn't prevent the club losing out on away goals to the competition's eventual winners. In the championship, he scored once in four appearances.

Newcastle United
After Martins submitted a transfer request, English Premier League club Newcastle United completed a deal with Inter for the striker on 24 August 2006 for €15 million Martins signed a five-year deal. He was paraded in front of the Geordie fans before their UEFA cup tie against FK Ventspils, and inherited the club's cherished number 9 shirt, vacated after the retirement of the club-record goalscorer Alan Shearer in April.

Martins made his Premier League debut on 27 August, in the 2–0 defeat to Aston Villa, in which he was stretchered off with a knee injury. It turned out that Martins suffered a severe dead leg and internal bleeding. His unremarkable first few appearances for Newcastle caused manager Glenn Roeder to speak out in his defence.[

VfL Wolfsburg
On 29 July 2009, Newcastle accepted a £9 million bid from Bundesliga champions VfL Wolfsburg, the transfer was confirmed on 31 July with Martins signing a four-year contract. For his debut, Martins came on as a second-half substitute against 1. FC Köln at the Rhein Energie Stadion, with his team deadlocked at 1–1. He helped in the buildup to the second goal and capped off his first appearance in the Bundesliga with a well-taken goal after dribbling past two onrushing defenders and then coolly finishing from six yards out, slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to the far post.

Rubin Kazan
On 9 July 2010, Martins was sold for a reported €17 million to reigning Russian Premier League champions Rubin Kazan. He signed a three-year contract and told BBC Sport: "I am joining a team of champions and I hope to bring my best to the club to make them even greater." Martins' agent, Nicola Walter, revealed that Rubin met all of the player's requirements and that manager Kurban Berdyev had a "massive role" for him to play, following the departure of striker Aleksandr Bukharov. Martins was able to make his debut with Rubin after 1 August, when the transfer window was opened. On 9 May 2012, Rubin Kazan won the Russian Cup giving Martins his first trophy in Russia.

Loan to Birmingham City
Following the birth of his child, Martins requested a move to England to be nearer to his family. On 31 January 2011, he joined Premier League club Birmingham City on loan until the end of the season, with the option of a £5 million permanent deal in the summer of 2011.He made his debut, which had been delayed by the formalities of obtaining a working visa, in the starting eleven against Stoke City on 12 February; he played for 75 minutes as Birmingham won 1–0

Levante
On 13 September 2012, Martins moved to Levante on a free transfer, signing a two-year contract He made his league debut on 23 September 2012, where he scored his first goal, and the winning goal, in a 2–1 home win against Real Sociedad. Martins scored a brace for Levante in their 3–1 home victory over Granada on 28 October, sending his side into fourth place in the La Liga standings

International career
He was a part of the Nigerian team that finished third in the 2006 African Cup of Nations. Martins scored two goals in the competition, both coming against Senegal in the first round.

His future for the national team has been placed in doubt on numerous occasions after separate incidents of controversy. In August 2006, the Nigerian FA (NFA) website had his date of birth down as 1 May 1978, which would have made him 28 years of age rather than 21. The NFA soon confirmed that it had been an administrative error and apologised for the confusion it had caused. However Martins threatened to quit playing for the national team after the blunder had initially put his move to Newcastle in doubt.

On 6 February 2007, Martins failed to turn up for the 4–1 friendly defeat against Ghana, despite being ordered to play. He later explained his absence was due to the fact he had travelled to Lagos to visit his sick mother. The Nigerian caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen was furious with Martins and threatened to ban him from the national team. On 14 February 2007, Martins apologised for missing the game but said he believed his mother's health was more important. He also said that he would be available to play for Nigeria in the future. He made his return to the national side on 24 March 2007, playing the full match against Uganda in an African Cup of Nations Qualifying match and won

Style of play
A fast, diminutive, and agile left-footed striker, who is quick on the ball, Martins is primarily known for his outstanding pace, mobility, and athleticism as a footballer, as well as his striking power, and his strength, in spite of his small stature; he has also stood out for his acrobatic goal celebrations.

Personal life
Martins received his U.S. green card in 2015 which qualifies him as a domestic player for MLS roster purposes

He is married to Ghanaian-Italian Abigail Barwuah, sister of Mario Balotelli. The couple have one child named Kendrick, born in 2013

A 45-year-old man, identified as Joseph Sunday Essien, has been arrested by the Police in Akwa Ibom State for allegedly raping his 13-year-old step daughter, Patience Edet Edem.

The State Police Commissioner, Musa Kimo, while parading the suspect before newsmen, said that the suspect allegedly slept with his step daughter four times.

Confirming the defilement, the victim said that her stepfather lured and slept with her on four occasions.

She also stated that her mother who did not believe her at first, caught him red handed and later reported the act to the police.

Corroborating her daughter’s statement, the mother said ”that her husband, on the fateful day, left her in their bedroom and sneaked into the girl’s room to carry out the act. She said that she lost her former husband – father to the victim – to death.

”I will never return to the home of that wicked man.” she said.

But speaking with newsmen, the suspect said that his wife and daughter made the allegation as a result of issues they had.

Sports / Arsenal Vs Man Utd: Mesut Ozil Sends Clear Message To Unai Emery’s Men by Emmaronad2(m): 10:07 am On 1 Jan 2019
Arsenal playmaker, Mesut Ozil, has sent a clear message to Unai Emery’s men ahead of their FA Cup fourth round tie with Manchester United on Friday night.

The ex-Germany international insisted that a “huge” game against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side awaits them at Emirates tomorrow.

Ozil was left out of the squad that defeated Chelsea 2-0 in the Premier League last weekend by Arsenal manager, Unai Emery because of “tactical reasons”.

It is believed that Emery is open to selling Ozil in January and reports claim he will even listen to loan offers.

Ozil signed a new long-term deal at the club last February and it sounds like the player will fight for his future at the North London club.

The midfielder however took to Twitter on Thursday and wrote: “A huge FA Cup game awaits us! #Together #COYG #M1Ö #YaGunnersYa @Arsenal @MatteoGuendouzi”

Sports / Sarri Hopes League Cup Final Spot Will Be ‘turning Point by Emmaronad2(m): 09:48 am On 1 Jan 2019
Chelsea’s Italian head coach Maurizio Sarri gestures on the touchline during the English Premier League football match between Arsenal and Cheslea at the Emirates Stadium in London. AFP
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri hopes victory on penalties over Tottenham to reach the League Cup final can prove a turning point in his first season in charge.

Sarri had questioned the mental strength of his squad and demanded star forward Eden Hazard delivered more on his abundant potential in the wake of a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday, and the Italian got the response he desired against an injury-ravaged Spurs.

First-half goals from N’Golo Kante and Hazard handed Chelsea a 2-1 win on the night to overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit and the hosts prevailed 4-2 in the shootout at Stamford Bridge to set up a final meeting with holders Manchester City on February 24th.

“I think that in the last three or four matches we had a problem. One problem was the motivation and the other problem was the players stopped having fun on the pitch. Now with the performance and the result we can find enthusiasm again,” said Sarri.

Chelsea’s new number nine Gonzalo Higuain was presented to the home fans before kick-off, but the Argentine’s loan move from Juventus was not completed in time for him to feature.

Sarri has been criticised for persisting with Hazard in a centre-forward position of late and the decision to move the Belgian back to his prefered role on the left of a front three with Olivier Giroud handed a rare start as the focal point of the attack paid dividends.

However, Sarri again preferred to focus on Chelsea’s mentality rather than his change of tactics.

“He played a fantastic, wonderful match,” added Sarri on Hazard’s performance. “I think in this match we played with another mind, another motivation, another determination. I think his qualities are more important than the position.”

However, Hazard was less enthused as he responded to Sarri’s claims before the game he is not a leader on the field.

“I don’t care. I just play my football,” Hazard told Sky Sports. “It doesn’t matter what the manager said. I just focus on my football and want to do my best for this team.”

Chelsea needed a slice of good fortune to open the scoring when Kante’s shot from the edge of the area went through Eric Dier and Moussa Sissoko’s legs to leave Paulo Gazzaniga unsighted and the ball also nutmegged the Argentine goalkeeper.

However, there was no luck about Chelsea’s second as Hazard rounded off a brilliant team move involving Ross Barkley, Pedro Rodriguez and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Another chance for Spurs to win the first trophy under Mauricio Pochettino has now gone.

Yet, Spurs’ spirit could not be questioned this time as they battled to stay in the tie for 90 minutes despite the absence of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min, while Ben Davies and Sissoko limped off to add to their growing list of injuries.

Tottenham have defied the odds all season to remain fighting on four fronts and they did so again to get back into the tie five minutes into the second half when Fernando Llorente stooped to met Danny Rose’s cross to level at 2-2 on aggregate.

“To lose in that way can happen. But we fought, were brave and with all the circumstances, all the players did well,” said Pochettino.

“I can only feel proud with all the circumstances to arrive at penalties. I can only congratulate my players, we are ready to compete in this type of level.”

Pochettino fell to his knees in exasperation as Llorente miscued Christan Eriksen’s inviting cross wide as the game sprang from end-to-end in the final quarter.

Giroud then had a huge opportunity to kickstart his faltering Chelsea career when picked out by Emerson’s cross deep into stoppage time, but the French striker headed wide to send the game to penalties.

Chelsea were more ruthless from the spot as Dier, who scored the winning penalty in England’s first ever World Cup shootout win in July, blazed over and Kepa Arrizabalaga saved from Lucas Moura, while Willian, Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho and David Luiz found the net.

Health / 6 Stomach Pains You Should Never Ignore by Emmaronad2(m): 09:46 am On 1 Jan 2019
For most people, stomach aches are a regular part of life. But beyond the acute, temporary discomfort that we’ve all experienced, there are also several forms of abdominal pain that can be a sign of a serious health issue and shouldn’t be ignored.

That said, it can be pretty tricky to figure out if your stomach pain is the type that will resolve on its own or if you need to see your doctor. Here’s the lowdown on six types of stomach pain you don’t want to brush aside:

1. Pain that’s not going away

Any chronic stomach discomfort ― that is, persistent or recurrent pain that lasts three months or longer ― warrants a visit to a doctor or nutritionist, said Liz McMahon, a Philadelphia-based registered dietitian. This sort of discomfort includes symptoms like ongoing diarrhoea, constipation, pain after eating, feeling full after just a few bites of food, bloating and gas.

These conditions could be caused by anything from irritable bowel syndrome or lactose intolerance to something more severe like gastroparesis, a condition where the stomach doesn’t empty properly, she said.

“It’s important to see a GI doctor to rule out anything more serious like inflammatory bowel disease or celiac disease, as well as just to get a proper diagnosis,” McMahon said. “Once we know what the issue is, then the registered dietitian can provide the right diet recommendations.”

2. Pain that’s accompanied by nausea or vomiting

Stomach discomfort that comes along with nausea and vomiting can happen for a number of reasons, said Elena Ivanina, a gastroenterologist at Lenox Hill Hospital. This includes intestinal or bowel obstruction, gastrointestinal infection, inflammation, kidney stones, a ruptured ovarian cyst, an ulcer or even a heart attack.

“There are many other diagnoses to consider so it is important to speak with a physician if you have abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting,” Ivanina said.

Of course, some cases of nausea are due to overeating and food poisoning and usually pass within a day or two.

“Most people have suffered from the occasional stomach bug that lasts around 24 hours and know how that feels,” Ivanina said. But it’s time to see a doctor if the pain is unfamiliar, getting worse, isn’t going away, or is associated with symptoms like a fever or blood in the stool, she said.

3. Pain or discomfort along with blood in the stool

“Any blood coming from the mouth or anus needs to be evaluated by a doctor,” said Samantha Nazareth, a New York City-based gastroenterologist.

Keep in mind that blood in the stool won’t always be red ― it can also be black and tar-like, which is often indicative of bleeding from somewhere higher up in the digestive tract, such as the stomach. Gastrointestinal bleeding can come from a number of sources including colitis, diverticulosis, haemorrhoids, a bleeding gastric ulcer and gastrointestinal cancers, Nazareth said.

But certain foods and medications can also cause tarry stools, so it’s important to think about what you’re taking and eating, said Niket Sonpal, adjunct assistant professor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. These include foods like blueberries, beets, black liquorice and more and medications like iron pills and bismuth medicines like Pepto-Bismol.

4. Pain that’s sudden and intense

If you’re experiencing strong and severe stomach pain, something probably isn’t right. Specific and localized pain that involves “a sharp shooting sensation that may even take your breath away, cause you to double over or hold the area, and happens in waves,” could be from an obstruction such as gallstones or kidney stones, Sonpal said.

Appendicitis is also a consideration when you’re experiencing sharp pain, Nazareth said. Often this will be the type of pain that’s worsening, comes on suddenly or isn’t going away. Severe pain can also be due to an ulcer, pancreatitis or a bile duct blockage.

“The key is to really zero in on the kind of pain that is being felt because they are indicative of different things,” Sonpal said, adding that it’s important not to delay getting help when sharp pains are involved.

5. Pain or discomfort that comes along with unexplained weight loss

“Unexpected or unintentional weight loss is always concerning and must be evaluated by a doctor whether it accompanies stomach pain or any other symptom,” Ivanina said, adding that this could be a sign of a risk for cancer, chronic pancreatitis, Crohn’s disease or other illnesses.

6. Pain or discomfort along with a fever

If you’re experiencing stomach discomfort and also have a higher body temperature than usual, this could indicate the presence of an infection. In cases like this, you’ll want to see a doctor, Sonpal said.

Ultimately, you know your body better than anyone. If you think something is wrong ― even if you’re unsure that it’s serious ― it’s always best to check in with a physician. Don’t just stomach your stomach pain.

Sports / Pogba Is Man United Captaincy Material, Says Solskjaer by Emmaronad2(m): 09:43 am On 1 Jan 2019
Manchester United’s Norwegian caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (2nd L) shakes hands with Manchester United’s French midfielder Paul Pogba./ AFP
Paul Pogba has the qualities to be captain of Manchester United, according to caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has overseen a dramatic return to form for the World Cup winner.

The France midfielder was told in September by then-manager Jose Mourinho that he would never captain the club again, days after an apparent disagreement over tactics.

Mourinho denied at the time that there had been any fallout between the pair, having taken the decision to strip Pogba of his role as United vice-captain.

The decision was made public days after Pogba appeared to question Mourinho’s approach by telling reporters that United should “attack, attack, attack”.

Pogba, who performed erratically for his club over the first half of the season, has scored five goals in six appearances since Solskjaer arrived as interim boss on December 19.

The Frenchman made his debut for United’s reserve team when Solskjaer was their manager during the 25-year-old’s first spell at the club.

The Norwegian said that he has long believed Pogba has what it takes to lead a team, although made clear that he is happy with United’s current set-up, with Ashley Young the regular captain on the pitch while Antonio Valencia, who has made just eight appearances this season, is the club captain.

“I know the boy from before, and he’s a leader,” Solskjaer said ahead of his team’s FA Cup fourth-round match against Arsenal on Friday.

“He’s a character who influences people. He cares and wants to be successful.

“He knows he can’t do it by himself. It’s a team game and he’s a character who brings so many good things with him when he’s enjoying himself, I have to say.

Pogba character
“You see the personality. He loves playing football. He’s a larger-than-life character. That’s just the way he is.

“When the performances come as well, that marries together as a good leader and you see what it meant to him winning the World Cup. So for me, yes, he’s captain material.”

Pogba has faced criticism in the past for his enthusiastic use of social media, not least when a post appeared on his Instagram account after Mourinho’s December sacking with a picture of himself smiling and the words “caption this”.

Former United players Gary Neville and Nicky B*tt both criticised the post, which was quickly deleted.

Solskjaer, though, says he is not worried about the way that players such as Pogba and teammate Jesse Lingard use social media.

“It’s part of the era we live in,” he said. “That’s just society now, that’s what they’re used to, the kids now. I’m not, but they are.

“And it’s all positive, it’s all good messages and I don’t have any problem with that whatsoever because that’s Paul, that’s Jesse. We’ve got certain rules obviously, and it’s common sense.”

Solskjaer said that there were no immediate plans to give Pogba the captain’s armband, adding that he felt the role could sometimes be given too much significance.

“Ashley’s wearing the armband, yes because Antonio’s struggled with fitness as well, in and out,” said Solskjaer.

“Antonio’s still the club captain, but Ash is wearing the armband when he’s playing. I’ve never been a fan of ‘You’re this and you’re that’.”

In its collective search for a polity that is just, egalitarian and inclusive, the Ime Obi Ohaneze Ndi Igbo met today Thursday 24 January, 2019 at the Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu, to further deliberate on the future of Ndigbo in the chequred history of a beleaguered country.

After a critical and dispassionate appraisal of the issues and the visible fault lines in our polity, including the analysis of the election manifestos of the various contesting parties, especially with regards to the restructuring of the federation and continued relevance of our people in the Nigerian geopolitical space, the meeting resolved as follows:

That Ohaneze remains the apex socio-cultural organization that works for the interest of the Igbo in and outside Nigeria. It attempts to aggregate the views of all other Igbo platforms;

The meeting further called on the international community to help to ensure a free and credible 2019 elections in Nigeria;

World Politics / Canada Ambassador Walks Back Comments On Huawai Executive by Emmaronad2(m): 09:34 am On 1 Jan 2019
McCallum, currently Ambassador to China, on January 24, 2019, walked back comments that Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou has a “strong case” against extradition to the US. AFP
Canada’s ambassador to China on Thursday walked back comments that Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou has a “strong case” against extradition to the United States, following a political backlash.

Ambassador John McCallum said in a statement that he “misspoke” and “regrets that my comments with respect to the legal proceedings of Ms Meng have created confusion.”

Meng was arrested on December 1 while changing planes in Vancouver at the request of the United States, which says she committed fraud by lying to bankers about allegedly violating American sanctions on Iran.

She has been released on bail, but her arrest has sparked an escalating diplomatic crisis between Ottawa and Beijing.

Speaking to Chinese-language media in Canada on Tuesday, after briefing lawmakers on the plight of two Canadians detained in China and a third-placed on death row in what are widely seen as retaliatory moves by Beijing, McCallum called the US extradition request flawed.

“I think Ms. Meng has quite a strong case,” he told a news conference.

“One, political involvement by comments from Donald Trump in her case. Two, there’s an extraterritorial aspect to her case, and three, there’s the issue of Iran sanctions which are involved in her case, and Canada does not sign on to these Iran sanctions. So I think she has some strong arguments that she can make before a judge,” he said.

His remarks about the case were quickly panned by opposition parties and others for seeming to undercut the strict hands-off approach to judicial matters touted by the Canadian government.

McCallum added that he plays “no role in assessing any arguments or making any determinations in the extradition process.”

Sports / Chelsea Beat Tottenham 4-2 On Penalties, Progress To League Cup Final by Emmaronad2(m): 09:32 am On 1 Jan 2019
Chelsea’s Brazilian defender David Luiz (L) celebrates with teammates after scoring the winning penalty in the shoot-out during the English League Cup semi-final second-leg football match between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. AFP
Chelsea provided the perfect response to manager Maurizio Sarri’s public criticism to progress to the League Cup final by beating Tottenham 4-2 on penalties in a thrilling semi-final, second leg on Thursday.

First-half goals from N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard handed Chelsea a 2-1 win on the night to overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit.

Willian, Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho and David Luiz then scored from the spot to send the Blues through to face Manchester City on February 24th, while Eric Dier and Lucas Moura missed for Spurs.

Sarri had questioned the mental strength of his squad and demanded Hazard to deliver more on his abundant potential in the wake of a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday, and the Italian got the response he desired against an injury-ravaged Spurs.

Kante levelled the tie with a shot from the edge of the box that went through three pairs of Spurs legs before Hazard rounded off an excellent team move to double Chelsea’s lead.

Fernando Llorente’s header hauled the visitors back into the tie five minutes into the second half, but another chance for Spurs to win the first trophy under Mauricio Pochettino has now gone.

Spurs’ spirit could not be questioned as they battled to stay in the tie for 90 minutes despite the absence of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min, but it could prove a costly night for Pochettino’s men as Ben Davies and Moussa Sissoko added to their growing list of injuries.

Sarri has been criticised for persisting with Hazard in a centre-forward position of late and the decision to move the Belgian back to his prefered role on the left of a front three paid dividends.

Chelsea’s new number nine Gonzalo Higuain was presented to the home fans before kick-off, but the Argentine’s loan move from Juventus was not completed in time for him to feature so Olivier Giroud was handed a rare start as the focal point of the attack.

The hosts were dominant in the first 45 minutes with Tottenham struggling to mount a threat on the counter-attack due to the 33-year-old Llorente’s lack of pace.

However, Chelsea needed a slice of good fortune to open the scoring when Kante’s shot from the edge of the area when through Dier and Sissoko’s legs to leave Paulo Gazzaniga unsighted and the ball also nutmegged the Argentine goalkeeper.

Davies added to Spurs’ injury woes by limping off with a groin injury just after the half-hour mark and five minutes later that latest blow was compounded by a Chelsea second.

Ross Barkley, Pedro Rodriguez and Azpilicueta were all involved before the latter picked out Hazard to side-foot home from inside the area.

Chelsea could even have made the tie safe before half-time as Toby Alderweireld was lucky to avoid punishment for chopping down his international team-mate Hazard as he bore down on goal.

Tottenham have defied the odds all season to remain fighting on four fronts despite a host of injuries, no new signings and persistent delays to the completion of the club’s new stadium.

And they did so again to get back into the tie five minutes into the second-half when Llorente stooped to met Danny Rose’s cross to level at 2-2 on aggregate.

The game then roared from end-to-end as both sides chased the winner.

Pochettino fell to his knees in exasperation as Llorente miscued Christan Eriksen’s inviting cross wide.

Giroud then had a huge opportunity to kickstart his faltering Chelsea career when picked out by Emerson’s cross deep into stoppage time, but the French striker headed wide to send the game to penalties.

Chelsea were more ruthless from the spot as Dier, who scored the winning penalty in England’s first ever World Cup shootout win in July, blazed over and Kepa Arrizabalaga saved from Moura.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday in Enugu inaugurated an academic Centre of Excellence built by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus.
Buhari said that the inauguration of the project became necessary following the desire of his administration to reverse the trend of dearth of infrastructure in Nigerian universities.

The president, who was on a campaign tour of Enugu State, said that his administration placed much premium on education as bedrock of growth and progress in the country.

He, however, regretted that facilities in most Nigerian universities had dilapidated over the years due to poor funding.

Buhari said that the immense challenge in the education sector called for a collaborative effort among stakeholders.

“We are committed and determined to reverse this trend even in the face of dwindling revenue. We shall not rest until we deliver on our promises,” he said.

The president said that it was gratifying to note that the institution which was the first indigenous university in the country had made tremendous efforts in academic pursuit.

Buhari lauded the vision of the founder of the institution, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe for giving Nigerians such gift.

Earlier in an address, the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said that the project initiated in 2006 was an intervention initiative of the apex financial institution in the education sector.

Emefiele said that the project was initiated to solve the manpower need of the country in Economics and financial disciplines.

“In conceiving this project, the aim of the bank was to ensure students at postgraduate levels in Economics, Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Administration and Statistics study in a serene environment.

“This is with a view to building human capacity for the financial services sub-sector,” he said.

The CBN governor said that the pilot phase of the project covered the three premier universities in Nigeria which are UNN, University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.

He said that six other universities had since been included in the project.

He said that the centre of excellence in the campus which was the first to be commissioned comprised 34, 102.8 square metre total floor area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the edifice has a 497 seating capacity auditorium and lecture theatres, a tele-presence room, tutorial rooms, cafeterias and kitchens.

It also has 133 en-suite fully furnished rooms (single and double) fitted with kitchens, a gymnasium, reading rooms and laundry.

There are also generator house with four 1000KVA generators, water treatment plant and others.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer laughed off the idea that legendary Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has been helping him pick his starting XI.

Ferguson left United retired from football management in 2013, but has remained a visible figure at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer, who played under the Scot, has got off to a perfect start as United boss, with seven wins in seven matches.

Some reports claimed the Norwegian was being advised by Ferguson, but the United caretaker boss dismissed the idea his old coach was heavily involved.

“We don’t speak weekly. I haven’t spoken to him many times. He has been in to visit us just once – he has been to see [Giuseppe] Rossi [at the training ground] once.

“The influence is more my 15 years under him. He is 77, it is not fair to him either is it?” Solksjaer said according to UK Metro.

United are now just three points off Chelsea, who occupy the final Champions League spot.

World Politics / 2019 Election: Abia In Trouble Over Alleged Pdp Financial Recklessness – Apga Gu by Emmaronad2(m): 10:50 am On 1 Jan 2019
Alex Otti, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, governorship candidate in Abia State, has declared that the state was in deep trouble over the alleged recklessness and mismanagement of public funds by the Governor Okezie Ikpeazu-led government in the state.

Otti made the declaration during the gubernatorial debate organized by Abia State Election Debate Team held on Tuesday in Umuahia, the state capital.

He opined that for Abia State to be salvaged from the current developmental backwardness allegedly orchestrated by the twenty years of PDP misrule there was need to allow competent people take over leadership of the state

According to the APGA chieftain, “Abia State is in trouble. Abia State is in comatose. So, it is like a man who is on life support and the doctor shows up, and says he wants to know from where the doctor comes.

“We need to cure the state. We need to deal with the problems of the state. And it goes beyond where somebody comes from ancestrally or where he comes from by birth.

“We are looking for competence. We are looking for people who are trained. We are looking for people who have skills. We are looking for people who have track record of performances.

“We have seen four years of PDP government in Abia State, we are not impressed.

Meanwhile, the governorship candidate of the Accord Party (AP), Emeka Uwakolam, has promised that he would run an open and inclusive government if elected as governor come March 2019.

He decried lack of transparency in the present administration in Abia State, pointed out that he would quarterly render account of any money spent

Uwakolam, who made his plans known, on Tuesday, while speaking at a governorship debate organized by the Abia state Election Debate Team in Umuahia, assured that his government would allow local government councils works freely without interference.

The APC candidate also pledged not to tamper with the funds meant for local government councils for the development of the grassroots.

His words, “Let us be fair to Abians. Let us be just to Abians. Whatever we are doing as government, let us remember that the people that entrusted these power to us, are the Abians.

“And what determines equity is what we do with the trusted positions that we are given. That is why I keep talking about honesty. There is nothing we can do in this state if we are not sincere to ourselves.

“Number one, I said, some people underplayed it. There must be conscious efforts to enthrone a leadership of the Almighty God in this state, so that the lights of God should shine on this state, so that we will witness bearable development.

“Until we have done that, there is a lot of story of government officials going to some places swearing an evil oath. That is handing over Abia to devil. Until we bring back this state to God, there may not be any meaningful development, first and foremost that what intent to do.

“Secondly, I intent to be honest with Abians. Every money that enters into hand, I will use it judiciously, as a man that is trusted. I will render an account. Like for instance, I don’t know what the governor earns. I will be very open to every Abians.

The lawyer added, “I will make sure, I give account every quarters of the year and everybody under me as commissioner will also do so. For local government administration, I will never touch their kobo”.

In his speech during the debate, the PDP gubernatorial candidate and the incumbent, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, reiterated the commitment of his administration in industralized the state.

He said, “I want to say without any fear of contradiction that no government before mine, had done what we have done in these past past four years despite distractions.

“Beyond that, we are leveraging in SME promotion. We are heading to industrialization, and we are going to run strongly in agriculture.

“Our vision is very clear and that is the only way for the of the youths in Asia State”.

Sports / Epl: Kevin De Bruyne Reveals Team That Will Win Title by Emmaronad2(m): 02:52 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Manchester City midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne, has admitted Liverpool will be worthy champions, if they win the title this year.

City are four points behind the Reds, following their 3-0 win over Huddersfield on Sunday.

De Bruyne says his team-mates will have to acknowledge Liverpool were better if they do win the Premier League, even if it means the Blues end up with the most points ever for a runner-up.

Manchester United’s 2011/2012 side are the current holders of that unwanted record with 89 points.

And De Bruyne accepts Pep Guardiola’s side could earn 90 points and still finish only second.

“Then you would just have to take it as it is and say, ‘We had a good season, but someone was better’ and congratulate them.

“We try to do the best as possible, but in the end if Liverpool get more points it is because they deserve it.

“Obviously you always want to win it, but if you get a season where you’re runners-up with 90 points, there’s not a lot you can say afterwards.

“There’s always luck involved. If you want to win something, you need luck, you need good form, everybody needs to be on it. It’s a consequence of everything,” he said, according to the UK Mirror.

Sports / Nigerian Footballers And Their Brother Jailed For Ngo Fraud by Emmaronad2(m): 02:43 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Former professional footballers Efe and Stephen Sodje, along with brother Bright, were given prison sentences for fraud last year in the U.K.

The three brothers were found to have siphoned off more than £60,000 given to the Sodje Sports Foundation (SSF).

They were jailed in September - Efe Sodje for 18 months, Bright Sodje for 21 months, and Stephen Sodje for two years and six months - at the Central Criminal Court in relation to the fraud.

Efe Sodje appeared for Nigeria in the 2000 African Cup of Nations and the 2002 World Cup, while Bright Sodje played professional rugby league and union in the 1980s and 1990s.

Efe, Bright and Stephen Sodje set up SSF in 2009 with the stated aim of helping poor children in the Niger delta. The three brothers used their connections within professional football and business communities to secure support for their foundation and to give it an appearance of legitimacy.

Between 2011 and 2014 they defrauded donors of at least £63,000. NCA officers who investigated the SSF's activities, found donations usually ended up in personal bank accounts of family members.

Events over the three years, including charity football matches, raised funds but nothing reached any under-privileged or sick children.

NCA deputy director Chris Farrimond said: "Bright, Efe and Stephen Sodje promoted themselves as generous, community-minded, figures when they were knowingly defrauding people who thought they were helping deprived children in Nigeria."

Their brother, Akpo, 37, is still wanted in connection with the fraud. He fled the UK during the investigation and a European Arrest Warrant has now been issued.

Two other men were convicted in connection with the same offences in January 2018.

World Politics / You Killed Your Opponents – Balarabe Musa Bombs Obasanjo Over Buhari, Abacha Com by Emmaronad2(m): 02:35 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Elder statesman, Balarabe Musa has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of laying the foundation for impunity in Nigeria.

The former Kaduna state governor said Obasanjo used instruments of state to harass the opposition.

Musa was reacting to the former president’s state of the nation press conference on Sunday.

He told The Nation: “Not only harass his political opponents but killed them. Obasanjo did that. Obasanjo did worse than what is happening today. In fact he continued like his predecessors in laying the foundation for the present negative state of the nation.

“I have been aware of Obasanjo’s attitude towards those in power. Since after he handed power as a military president, he has been consistently acting like an agent provocateur on behalf of international imperialism. Particularly now that Nigeria has no alternative.

“It can’t rely on PDP, it can’t rely on the APC. They are both the same. They are both at the root of the present negative state of the nation and most unfortunately, there is no credible, demonstrative and qualitative alternative in view from the political system.

“Nigeria is now facing a calamity and Obasanjo is using it, apparently to serve the interest of imperialism. Watch it, instead of using his relevance as former head of state to correct things, he always wait until things are bad and he makes it even worse.”

Programming / 10 Tips On How To Increase Youtube Views By Yourself by Emmaronad2(m): 02:22 pm On 1 Jan 2019
YouTube is one of the top-notch search engines that you will find around the globe. When it comes to video content, YouTube is the name that everyone calls out. People have started converting their textual content into video content because there is a lot of demand for videos. YouTube, the second largest search engine in the world holds tremendous popularity among everyone. So those of you who have a YouTube Channel and are looking to increase the views, here are few tips for you.

First thing first – a piece of advice! Never ever buy the views. Void services that offer you the opportunity to gain views by spending money. They are pure frauds as you will only end up pouring money. Though you will get views, your likes and subscribers will not increase at all. So here is the deal that is going to work for you.

1. SEO your video
Youtube Video SEO is not just limited for Google, but you need to do SEO for the video by incorporating keywords in the video title and description. Make sure that they are search engine optimized. If you are creating a video on how to make Italian pasta, then you need to have the keywords that people usually search for this. Keep your description detailed and include the links to your social media accounts.

2. Use an appropriate thumbnail
It is important to use a suitable thumbnail instead of using an over the top sensational thumbnail. The thumbnails which are misleading are completely against YouTube’s terms and conditions. The thumbnail is such that it informs people what the video is all about so that they can confidently click on it and watch it. A good and apt thumbnail is important to encourage people to watch the video.

YouTube already has this default system where it automatically chooses 3 images which are apt as a thumbnail for your video. But then you can also create your own thumbnail and upload it.

3. Make use of Facebook
Facebook is the world’s largest social media platform. You must connect your Facebook account with your YouTube channel in order to have further engagement and discussion on your video. Facebook is also useful for reaching out to your subscribers when they are not active on YouTube. You can post the video as an embedded video to generate more views.

4. Twitter has a lot of power
Twitter is a platform where you can keep the conversations moving related to your area of concern. Since Twitter heavily works on the hashtag, you can research on a hashtag which is popular and make a video related to that. Whatever Tweets that you are putting on Twitter must contain relevant hashtags so that the audience is driven towards it.

5. Have the inclusion of CTA
ask to subscribe to youtube channelThere are people who subscribe to your channel without you even asking for it. But then for those who like your videos but forget to subscribe to your channel, you can put a call-to-action of subscribing B*tton at the end of the video. You can also put the CTA of watch next video. You need to explain to the audience as to how your channel is going to benefit them.

6. Consistency is the key
In order to get a good amount of views, you need to be absolutely consistent with your videos. You need to keep on posting at regular intervals. It will not do if you are uploading one video and then the next video after two months. You have to make sure that you are posting twice a week. For this, you need to make a proper video schedule so that people are aware of the fact that you are regular with uploading videos.

7. Focus on the trending topics
This is a great way to attract more views to your videos on YouTube. Make videos on the content which is already viral. I am not saying that copy it from someone. What I am trying to say is that create content that can be linked to your brand. So you need to be really clever with the theme. For example, if you are a bike manufacturer and looking to make a video on Independence Day, then you need to connect independence with your brand so that you will get more views for your unique content. This is the job of your marketing team to create content.

8. Create End screens
It is really important to have end screens to your videos. YouTubers know what importance the “End Screens” hold in their lives. Those last 5-20 seconds are very crucial where the YouTubers can add that extra piece of information to promote their content or
the channel or website. So basically, we can say that End screens are a kind of lifeline for the YouTubers and the best part is that, it is mobile friendly, which means, it becomes simple for the viewer to take the next move before the video ends and thus, this end screen keeps the viewer go with the flow!

9. Create a supporting blog for your channel
You are producing video content for your brand. So I would suggest you have a blog that will support your video content. You have a website, so you must publish blogs on it so that you can embed the YouTube videos in your blog and get more views. YouTube keeps on changing its policies so it is better to have your own place which is in your control.

10. Create playlists
create youtube playlist to increase video viewsCreate playlists for your content so viewers can watch it consecutively. After the first video ends, your other videos will automatically play, which will get more views for each played video without them having to navigate off the player. You can embed playlists, post them in your channel, or have users share them to increase the total views for each playlist.

So if you follow these tips you will automatically start getting a good amount of views on your YouTube videos. Just keep calm and keep doing your work.

Education / Asuu Strike: Fg Resumes Talks With Lecturers by Emmaronad2(m): 02:18 pm On 1 Jan 2019

The Federal Government has again resumed negotiations with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), in a bid to bring an end the ongoing strike.

ASUU has maintained that the strike, which began November 4, won’t be called off until its demands were met by the federal government.

The meeting, which began on Monday evening around 5pm, had in attendance the minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, as well as a delegation of the striking lecturers.

Some of the conditions which ASUU has given the Federal government to call off the strike include that FG releases N50billion, to demonstrate its commitment to the revitalisation of the universities.

This is in following the MoU signed by both ASUU and FG in 2013, wherein the federal government agreed to pay the academic body N1.3trillion, as part of the funds for the revitalisation of the universities.

Although the MoU had stipulated that the payment be made in tranches of N200billion in 2013; N220billion 2014; N220billion 2015; N220billion in 2016; N220billion in 2017 and N220billion in 2018, only N200billion was released in 2013.

Meanwhile, at the resumed meeting today, Dr. Ngige said the meeting is aimed at bringing the strike to a halt.

Also, the ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, said the union hoped the federal government would do the needful to resolve the strike.

Sports / Jose Mourinho Reveals How He Nearly Died While Trying To Defy Uefa Match Ban by Emmaronad2(m): 02:16 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Jose Mourinho has finally revealed all about his infamous laundry basket incident as Chelsea boss in 2005... admitting he was close to death.

Last night, working as a pundit for beIN Sports, the Special One admitted for the first time he tried to defy a two-match Uefa ban by hiding in a laundry basket.

Mourinho, now 55, had been slapped with the ban for his behaviour in the previous round of the Champions League against Barcelona.

Now, the former Manchester United boss has admitted he was in the laundry basket... and nearly suffocated.

When asked if he was in fact in the lbox full of dirty kit, Mourinho - who last night claimed he has turned down three jobs since being sacked by Manchester United last month - incredibly revealed: "Yes, yes I was.

"The fundamental thing of it is - Chelsea vs Bayern Munich, a big match in the Champions League. I need to be with my players… and I did it, yeah.

"Let me tell the story. You know Stewart Bannister, the Chelsea kit man. Skinny Stewart. I go to the dressing room during the day, so I was there.

"I'm there since midday, and the game is seven o'clock. I just want to be in the dressing room when the players arrive.

"So I go there, nobody sees me. The problem was to leave after.

"Stewart put me in the basket. The metal one, the hard one. Puts me in there.

"I go in there with a little bit open, so I could breathe, but when Stewart is taking that outside the dressing room, outside the stadium, the Uefa guys are there desperate to find me.

"So when I was there, Stewart closed the box. I couldn't breathe. When he opened the box, I was dying.

"I'm serious. I was close to dying. I'm serious, I promise. It's true, it's true."

Mourinho was retelling the incredible tale to Andy Gray, Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink and Richard Keys - who were all rendered hysterical - during Arsenal's 2-0 win over Chelsea last night.
