The East Africans yesterday continued their dominance of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon with Ethiopia’s Sintayehu Legese winning the top prize of $50,000 in 2:17:24, while the defending champion, Kenya’s Joshua Kiprotich (2:18:14) and Kenya’s William Yegon (2:20:04) came second ($40,000) and third ($30,000) respectively in the men’s category.

In the women’s cadre, the Ethiopians, however, made a clean sweep of the event with Dinke Meserate clinching the top prize of $50,000 in 2:47:38 time, while Alennesh Herpha placed second in 2:48:01, as Kebena Chala finished third in 2:49:04. Both athletes got rewarded with $40,000 and $30,000 respectively for their efforts.

Gideon Goyet was the first Nigerian to cross the finishing line in 2 hours, 30 minutes to win N3 million, beating last year’s champion, Iliya Pam to second place, with a prize money of N2million.However, there was jubilation yesterday at the IAAF Bronze Label marathon as, Pam who many call the queen of long-distance races in Nigeria achieved a historic feat by breaking into the overall top female finishers.

Speaking at the occasion, the Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said it was gratifying that the marathon was getting bigger and better yearly, adding that the competition had come to stay.“I want to say a big thank you to all Lagosians for tolerating us in the last four years because this is the fourth time we are doing this Lagos Access Marathon and it has been improving year in, year out. This year, we had 58 countries participating and over 100,000 athletes also taking part in this journey.

“The marathon is part of our administration’s initiative to use sports, tourism, entertainment, arts and culture to promote the excellence of Lagos and positively engage the youth,” Ambode said. Also speaking, the Group Managing Director, Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe, promised bigger support towards encouraging the public in the adoption of a lifestyle that would promote good healthy living.

“Access Bank will ensure this marathon gets better every year, as we target world class outings till we achieve the silver and gold label rating from IAAF. “The brave spirit of the men and women that ran today represents the core value of Access Bank’s journey to becoming Africa’s gateway to the world.

“Our focus is to advance Nigeria’s blossoming drive for health and fitness. We have made it our responsibility to encourage the general public and create value for stakeholders,” Wigwe stated. One of the highlights of yesterday’s marathon race was the donation of N2.5million by Governor Ambode to an upcoming artiste, Johnson David, who was invited by Nigerian hip-hop star, D Banj, to perform on stage from the crowd.

World Politics / Re: Presidency In Dilemma Over Nba’s Lobby To Drop Charges Against Onnoghen by Joshuajohn(m): 08:41 pm On 2 Feb 2019
Preshemeka600:More than one week after suspending the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Nkanu Onnoghen, and replacing him with his immediate junior, the Presidency seems to be in a dilemma on how to resolve the logjam arising from the development.

Onnoghen

Justice Onnoghen
The Presidency, it was learnt, is also alarmed by the opposition voiced against the suspension of the beleagued CJN only weeks to the 2019 elections in which President Muhammadu Buhari is seeking re-election.

Why Buhari told Imo people to vote according to their conscience – Presidency

The fear of the Presidency is that the uproar could instigate a section of the country against him and deny him votes on election date, February 16.

But in a bid to find a way out of the quagmire, a 12-man team from the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, reportedly met with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, last Monday, to proffer solution to the problem.

Although members of the NBA delegation remained unnamed as of the time of going to the press last night, it was gathered that they presented a six-point demand to the Presidency as a means of resolving the crisis over Onnoghen and move the judiciary forward.

A source close to the meeting between the NBA and the Vice President described the demands tabled as a win-win scenario but did not say if it was accepted or rejected by the Presidency.

But a Presidency source, who spoke with Sunday Vanguard, neither denied nor confirmed the meeting between the VP and the NBA representatives.

The six-point demand, according to a source, are as follows: The CJN to resign or retire without coercion; govt to withdraw all charges against Onnoghen; no molestation of the CJN under any guise;

Acting CJN should quit; NBA team to prevail on relatives, friends to persuade Onnoghen to resign; and consensus on the need to clean up the judiciary (long term measure).

Muslim group rejects Onnoghen, Tanko Mohammed’s resignation

Meanwhile, Muslim group, Muslims Rights Concern, MURIC, headed by Prof. Ishaq Akintola, has rejected the idea of pleading with Onnoghen to resign instead of prosecuting him for allegedly using his position to amass wealth.

2019 elections: Worried UN meets Buhari, PDP Chairman; convenes meeting of ‘respected voices’

MURIC, in a statement made available to Sunday Vanguard, last night, also opposed the alleged demand by the NBA that the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Tanko, should quit, saying that he had not committed any offence to warrant resignation.

MURIC said that whereas the idea of meeting with the Presidency to proffer solution to the crisis was necessary, it rejected in its entirety its recommendations apart from the sixth demand which deals with the urgent need to clean up the judiciary.

“We appeal to the NBA to call a spade a spade. The body of lawyers should avoid spite and the pull-them-down syndrome. NBA appears to be cutting its nose in order to spite its face. This seems to be what the association is doing by trying to extenuate the offence committed by Justice Onnoghen while demonising Justice Tanko. Is the NBA not biased? Isn’t Justice Tanko also a member of the legal body?

“How should we judge an association that treats one member as a sacred cow and pushes another onto the rail line when a train is approaching at full speed? It is the most odious and insidious segregation. NBA needs to reassess itself,” MURIC said.

World Politics / Re: Kogi Government Accuses Deputy Governor Of Collecting Bribe From Contractors by Joshuajohn(m): 08:39 pm On 2 Feb 2019
Preshemeka600:The disagreement between the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello and his deputy, Simon Achuba, has taken a bad turn after the state government accused the latter of taking bribe from contractors.

According to Punch, the accusation was made at a town hall meeting in the Ibaji Local Government Area in the eastern senatorial district on Thursday by Chief of Staff to the Governor, Edward Onoja who accused Achuba of accepting kickbacks from contractors working on some roads in the area.

He said the embattled deputy governor was under investigation for the alleged offence, blaming his (Achuba’s) office for government’s failure to fulfill its promises to Ibaji people.

Onoja said the people would be surprised by the revelations on their son who he described as “the enemy within.”

He stated that he played roles in the nomination and subsequent emergence of Achuba as deputy governor, adding that he took many factors into consideration before backing the Ibaji people to clinch the deputy governorship slot.

Reacting to the allegation, the Senior Special Assistant on Political Matters to Achuba, Honorious Aromeh, described Onoja as a sinking man.

According to Aromeh, Achuba’s statement portrays him as a man with a lying spirit. He wondered why a governor’s aide would publicly derogate the office of the deputy governor by telling lies to cover up government’s inadequacies.

Aromeh said, “Who was the contractor that alleged that the deputy governor collected kickbacks. Was it because the deputy governor collected kickback that Bassa road and roads in the western and central senatorial districts are not completed? Was it because the deputy governor collected kickbacks that made projects inconclusive and why government cannot inaugurate a project in three years, while workers and pensioners are owed salaries and pension for between 30 and 35 months?”

Sports / Re: Copa Del Rey: Barca Cannot Underestimate In-form Madrid, Says Valverde by Joshuajohn(m): 08:33 pm On 2 Feb 2019
wraymix:Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde believes Real Madrid are enjoying one of their best periods of the season ahead of the teams’ Copa del Rey semi-final first leg next week.

Barca drew Madrid in the draw on Friday, meaning there will be three Clasicos in a month and two in four days, with the second leg on February 27 coming just before their La Liga fixture on March 2.

Chasing a record fifth Copa del Rey success in a row, Barcelona will be favourites, particularly after they thrashed Madrid 5-1 at the Camp Nou in October.

But their opponents have found form in recent weeks. Santiago Solari’s side have won six out of their last seven matches in all competitions.

“We see it as very even,” Valverde said at a press conference on Friday. “In the league, they arrived at a complicated time for them psychologically but now they are in a different moment, with more confidence.

“They are much better, getting better results and that changes a lot. A bit like Valencia tomorrow, we play them in one of their best moments of the season.”

Barcelona host Valencia at home in La Liga on Saturday and then face a trip to Athletic Bilbao next weekend, four days after the first leg against Real.

Valverde has rotated key players in the Copa del Rey this season and suggested he could do so again, admitting “we cannot neglect our job in La Liga”.

The Champions League also restarts this month, with Barca up against Lyon in the last 16.

“They are two great matches that come at a time when both teams are fighting for the top spots in the league and at the same time as the Champions League gets going again too,” Valverde said.

“It is a lot of important matches but we know that they are exciting for people, also for us, and it’s a great semi-final. Let’s see if we can make it through.”

Ousmane Dembele is close to recovering from an ankle injury but it is not clear whether the Frenchman will be fit for the first leg at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.

“I don’t know, we will evaluate him on Monday to see how he is,” Valverde said. “We thought for next week he could be available but I don’t know. On Monday we will have an answer.”

Barcelona also unveiled new signing Jean-Clair Todibo on Friday after the 19-year-old’s summer move from Toulouse was brought forward.

“He’s a signing for the future,” Valverde said. “But given his situation at Toulouse, it was decided he could join us now with the idea of settling in with his new team-mates.”

Crime / Re: Father Charged With Rape After Missing Tennessee Girl Is Found In Wisconsin by Joshuajohn(m): 08:40 pm On 2 Feb 2019
admin:A 14-year-old girl who disappeared from Tennessee more than two weeks ago has been found alive in Wisconsin and her father is now charged with rape, authorities said Thursday.
The girl is "doing fine," Sheriff Tommy Jones of Monroe County, Tennessee, said Thursday.
Randall Pruitt, who adopted the girl, was arrested Thursday in Tennessee and charged with rape, the sheriff said. "(The girl) would be the victim in that," Jones said.

The investigation continues, he said, and there is a possibility other people were involved and could be charged.
Asked if there is a connection between the girl and the residence where she was found, Jones told reporters his office does not believe there is any relation to the person living in the Wisconsin home.
Pruitt is being held with no bond and his first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's online records.

CNN is not naming the girl because she is the alleged victim of s*xual assault.
The girl had last been seen January 13 at her home in Madisonville, in eastern Tennessee between Chattanooga and Knoxville.

Crime / Re: Nigerian Man And His Deadly Gang Members Captured After Police Chase In London ( by Joshuajohn(m): 08:38 pm On 2 Feb 2019
Emmaronad2:Four men including a Nigerian man who threatened police officers with a firearm during a vehicle pursuit in east London have been convicted, yesterday, Wednesday, 30 January, at the Old Bailey.

Lekan Akinsoji, 21, was found guilty of possession of firearm with intent to endanger life and conspiracy to commit GBH. Nathaniel Lewis, 23, was found guilty of possession of firearm with intent to endanger life and conspiracy to commit GBH.

Darnell Joseph-Newill, 21, was found guilty of possession of firearm with intent to endanger life and conspiracy to commit GBH. Troy Ifill, 22, was found guilty of possession of firearm with intent to endanger life and conspiracy to commit GBH.

All four men will be sentenced on Friday, February 8.

On 26 July 2018 at approximately 22:45hrs, police were called to reports of men in the area brandishing a firearm.

Armed officers made their way to the area and spotted a BMW Series 1 matching the description of the car on Cathall Road, Leytonstone. After following the vehicle for a short time, the car made off. Officers illuminated their blue lights and sounded their sirens indicating for the car to stop, but it did not.

The occupants of the vehicle brandished a firearm at officers in the marked police vehicle. During the pursuit the officers used a specialist pursuit tactic, making contact with the BMW, causing damage to both vehicles.

The BMW did not stop and it continued at high speed along Odessa Road. During this part of the pursuit the officers in the ARV believed they saw the gun pointed at them again.

The pursuit ended when the BMW was blocked by an oncoming vehicle in Bective Road. The driver of the BMW fled the scene whilst the other occupants of the car were detained by police. All the men were wearing face coverings, gloves and one man wore a clown mask. Two of the men were carrying lock knives.

Officers discovered a shortened shotgun, a large Zombie-style knife and a Zombie-style axe in the car. A hunting knife was found under the car. A can of petrol together with the original registration plate belonging to the car were also found in the back of the vehicle.

It was later established that the car had been stolen during a burglary. The firearm was examined by a forensic firearms expert and identified as a single-barrelled shotgun, loaded with a 12-bore cartridge.

All four men were found to be gang members and had produced a number of ‘drill’ music videos, including videos bragging about gang activity and serious criminality.

Education / Re: European Colonizers Killed So Many Native Americans That It Changed The Globe by Joshuajohn(m): 08:36 pm On 2 Feb 2019
admin:
When Europeans arrived in the Americas, they caused so much death and disease that it changed the global climate, a new study finds.
European settlers killed 56 million indigenous people over about 100 years in South, Central and North America, causing large swaths of farmland to be abandoned and reforested, researchers at University College London, or UCL, estimate. The increase in trees and vegetation across an area the size of France resulted in a massive decrease in carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, according to the study.
Carbon levels changed enough to cool the Earth by 1610, researchers found. Columbus arrived in 1492,

"CO2 and climate had been relatively stable until this point," said UCL Geography Professor Mark Maslin, one of the study's co-authors. "So, this is the first major change we see in the Earth's greenhouse gases."
Before this study, some scientists had argued the temperature change in the 1600s, called the Little Ice Age, was caused only by natural forces.
But by combining archaeological evidence, historical data and analysis of carbon found in Antarctic ice, the UCL researchers showed how the reforestation -- directly caused by the Europeans' arrival -- was a key component of the global chill, they said.
"For once, we've been able to balance all the boxes and realize that the only way the Little Ice Age was so intense is ... because of the genocide of millions of people," Maslin told CNN.
The methodology
Researchers analyzed Antarctic ice, which traps atmospheric gas and can reveal how much carbon dioxide was in the atmosphere centuries ago.
"The ice cores showed that there was a larger dip in CO2 (than usual) in 1610, which was caused by the land and not the oceans," said Alexander Koch, lead author of the study.
A small shift in temperatures -- about a 10th of a degree in the 17th century -- led to colder winters, frosty summers and failing harvests, Koch said.
The implications
The implications of the study go beyond climate science and also contribute to research in geography and history, Maslin said, noting that deaths of indigenous Americans directly contributed to the success of the European economy.

Natural resources and food shipped from the New World helped Europe's population to expand. It also allowed people to stop farming for sustenance and begin working in other industries for spare money.
"The really weird thing is, the depopulation of the Americas may have inadvertently allowed the Europeans to dominate the world," Maslin said. "It also allowed for the Industrial Revolution and for Europeans to continue that domination."

Health / Re: Teen Who Walked While On Life Support Is Home From Hospital by Joshuajohn(m): 08:34 pm On 2 Feb 2019
admin:For the past 467 days, Zei Uwadia has been hospitalized on life support -- but that hasn't kept the quiet-natured teenager from walking, eating her favorite foods or even doing planks as exercise.
Now, with determination and strong-willed attitude, the student at North High School in Wichita, Kansas, is happy to finally be home.
"It helps a lot to have a goal in mind and just use that to motivate you and remember that you will get better; nothing's permanent," Zei said.

She arrived home on Thursday, the day before her 17th birthday.

Zei's mysterious medical journey began in October 2017, when she had difficulty breathing, desperately gasping for air. Her lungs were failing, but no one knew why.
As Zei's symptoms became more alarming, her mother, Brie Kerschen, took her to see an emergency physician. Zei was admitted to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in Wichita. Then, on Halloween 2017, a medical flight transferred her to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

Doctors performed several tests to determine what could be causing the otherwise healthy teen to suffer, and they found clues that her symptoms might have been part of a severe allergic reaction to the common antibiotic Bactrim.
Before being hospitalized, Zei was taking the antibiotic for an unrelated kidney infection, her mother said.
"I don't know if we'll ever be able to 100% prove it, but we have included her in a series of five patients that have all had reactions to antibiotics and had severe pulmonary failure," said Dr. Jenna Miller, a pediatric intensivist at Children's Mercy Hospital who has been working on Zei's case. She added that the five cases were specifically Bactrim reactions.
The hospital has submitted the physicians' findings to be considered for publication in a medical journal.
Walking while on life support
At Children's Mercy Hospital, Zei paced the halls while tethered to an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, machine that helped her breathe and kept her alive.
The machine, often called the "highest form of life support," uses a pump to circulate a patient's blood through an artificial lung. The artificial lung adds oxygen and removes carbon dioxide before the blood is returned to the patient.
In other words, ECMO helps provide oxygen to a patient while giving their lungs or heart time to rest and heal.
The national survival rate in the United States among neonatal and pediatric ECMO patients is about 72%. At Children's Mercy, where more than 800 patients have been on ECMO, the rate is about 78%.
Zei was the hospital's first patient to sit up, stand and walk while on ECMO.
"We all just believed she could get better -- and her mom and she believed it," Miller said. "I think that was very powerful for everybody."

Zei's case remains unusual, and not all ECMO patients can expect a similar prognosis, but her story has inspired patients and physicians around the world.
She was on ECMO support for 189 days, Miller said. ECMO use for more than 100 days is rare.
There have been conflicting reports of the longest ECMO run overall in pediatrics, but at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, a pediatric burn patient spent 551 days in between ECMO and using a ventricular assist device, possibly setting a record.
"What I recognize now is our situation, as difficult as it was, is not as unique as I would have thought," Kerschen said.
"I've been living in the hospital with Zei for 456 days, and most of the time, this hospital is full of other parents and kiddos that are going through the same thing," she said. "So now I find that there is a tremendous amount of suffering in the world most of the time for most people. ... That doesn't mean you can't be happy at the same time and have periods of joy, which is how we survived it."
'There's no medicine that can replace Zei touching home'
Seeing her daughter walk was a sign of hope for Kerschen.
"She started exercising more, and then she started pushing herself harder than she had, and then eventually she started beating us in her plank challenges. She planked for a minute and a half on a ventilator life support -- beat her mom," Kerschen said, laughing at the memory of her daughter defeating her at planks.
"That was around September," she said. In early January, she was told that her daughter was on track to go home.
"The hospital saved our lives, no doubt, but at this point, there's no medicine that can replace Zei touching home and what that's going to do for her spirit," Kerschen said.

"She's going home on 48 different medications," Kerschen said. "So it's ICU care at home."
Although she no longer will be on the ECMO machine, she will be connected to an at-home ventilator, Miller said, and she will return to the hospital monthly for steroid infusions.
Looking ahead, Miller said, the first goal in Zei's care would be to make sure she improves to the point where she does not need a lung transplant. Then, the second goal would be for her to improve enough that she no longer needs a ventilator.
"The amount of work that everyone put in, including Zei, to help get her to this place has really been something that we have not done before, and it really took a lot of dedication on everyone's part," Miller said.
"Everyone is really committed, has been committed and remains committed to try to keep her home," she said. "It's a large undertaking for everyone involved."
Zei's family also has been installing additional railing and other items in their home to help her navigate stairs and other spaces.
"This is a very big and celebratory moment. It's everything we've been waiting for, but I know for her, it's not the life we left," Kerschen said.
'You can carry the happiness and the sadness at the same time'
On Tuesday, Kerschen took Zei out in her car for the first time, in preparation for her homecoming and the logistics involved with continuing her care outside of the hospital. She then noticed that this might not be the homecoming Zei had originally pictured.
"We came back, and she sat down on the bed ... and she just said, 'I think it might be a little depressing,' " Kerschen recalled.
"I just wanted her to know that that was OK, and that doesn't mean we're not going to be really happy too, because you can carry the happiness and the sadness at the same time," she said. "It's OK to be happy even when you're going through it."
When Zei arrived home on Thursday, she was thrilled not only to be reunited with her two younger siblings but to get acquainted with her newly remodeled room.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation contacted Zei and her family last year to grant her wish while she was battling illness. This year, it was decided that the wish would be a bedroom makeover.

"Part of the benefit of this has been, over the past month, it has been a nice distraction for her to kind of dream about what her room would look like, pick out things and communicate with them," Kerschen said.
Zei now gets to enjoy reading, resting and applying her glam makeup -- one of her favorite hobbies -- in a brand new bedroom.

Zei also plans to continue her studies through an online program at her high school.
As she starts her new life at home, she will be remembered at Children's Mercy Hospital as the girl who walked.

US Politics / Re: Cory Booker Announces He Is Running For President by Joshuajohn(m): 08:32 pm On 2 Feb 2019

Sen. Cory Booker, a New Jersey Democrat who rose to prominence as Newark's charismatic and ambitious mayor, announced Friday that he is running for president.
Booker chose the first day of Black History Month to launch his campaign, timing that nods to Booker's own heritage and suggests he will put it at the center of his pitch to voters.
"The history of our nation is defined by collective action; by interwoven destinies of slaves and abolitionists; of those born here and those who chose America as home; of those who took up arms to defend our country, and those who linked arms to challenge and change it," Booker narrates in a video released on Friday morning, which features him walking through his Newark neighborhood.

"I'm Cory Booker and I'm running for president of the United States of America," he says in the video.

Booker joins a crowded and growing Democratic field that is already the most diverse in history -- with multiple women, one g*y candidate, a Latino and, with Booker now in the mix, two black candidates.
His announcement comes nearly a year to the day from the Iowa caucuses and the start of the primary calendar. Booker plans to head to Iowa February 8-9 and then to South Carolina on February 10. He also intends to visit New Hampshire over Presidents Day weekend.
Booker is one of several senators running for president or seriously considering it. At 49, he is the youngest among his Senate colleagues in the race. His age is not all that sets him apart: Booker is unmarried and vegan, two unique qualities among the emerging Democratic field.
In his announcement video, Booker also notes that he is "the only senator who goes home to a low-income, inner city community" in Newark, "the first community that took a chance on me."
In the Senate, Booker has at times favored a pragmatic approach, teaming up with like-minded Republicans on issues like criminal justice. But he has also emerged as a passionate interrogator of President Donald Trump's nominees -- including Justice Brett Kavanaugh, at whose confirmation hearing Booker memorably unloaded in a heated "Spartacus moment."
Public polling suggests Booker is unknown to many Americans. But in a field where there is no clear front-runner, he brings a raw political talent that some Democrats believe could make him a powerful contender.
The campaign message of Booker, who's a gifted orator on the stump, will center on his signature themes of finding "common purpose" and a bringing about a "revival of civic grace" in American society, drawing a stark, if implicit, contrast with President Donald Trump's harsh rhetoric.
While Booker has been reluctant to attack the President directly, not wanting to emulate his tactics, Trump has not hesitated to target the senator -- saying during a White House event in October that Booker "ran Newark, New Jersey, into the ground."
Here are the Democrats who have said they're running for president
Here are the Democrats who have said they're running for president
It's unclear how Booker's record as mayor will play in the Democratic primary or beyond. Critics say Booker did not meet his lofty promises to reshape the city, with some progressives faulting his support for school choice, among other issues. But Booker's allies believe this chapter of his story will be an asset, affording Booker some distance from Washington and demonstrating his executive chops.
As a senator, Booker has sought to sand off some of his rough political edges ahead of 2020, burnishing his progressive credentials by signing on to policies such as "Medicare-for-all." Last year, he announced he would no longer accept corporate PAC money; some progressives have been skeptical of Booker for the support he has received from Wall Street donors. Booker will also oppose super PACS supporting his candidacy or others.
Reflecting its central place in Booker's story, Newark will be the headquarters for his campaign. Logistically, that home base will offer the candidate and his team easy access to the power hubs of Washington and New York, plus proximity to three major airports to facilitate travel to key primary states and fundraising hotspots around the country.
His campaign manager will be Addisu Demissie, a veteran of Booker's 2013 Senate race, who most recently ran Gavin Newsom's successful bid for California governor. Demissie also boasts experience on the ground in Iowa, having cut his teeth as a field organizer for John Kerry's 2004 caucus campaign, returning in the 2008 cycle on behalf of Hillary Clinton.
Other top campaign officials announced Friday include Jenna Lowenstein, who formerly ran Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy's 2018 re-election campaign, as deputy campaign manager; Booker's Senate chief of staff Matt Klapper as senior adviser; and Modia Butler, a longtime Booker adviser dating back to his days in Newark, as senior strategist.
Booker's path to the nomination would almost certainly run through South Carolina, where African-American voters compose a majority of the Democratic primary electorate. But Booker has also aggressively cultivated a network in Iowa, recognizing that a strong performance there would build valuable momentum for later contests.
To steer his Iowa operation, Booker has already lined up a team of sought-after operatives: Michael Frosolone, who led Iowa Democrats' statehouse campaigns in 2018; Joe O'Hern, who ran the Democratic coordinated campaign in Ohio during the midterms and oversaw Martin O'Malley's 2016 caucus efforts; Haley Hager, most recently the Iowa director for Tom Steyer's NextGen group targeting young voters; and Tess Seger, outgoing communications director for the Iowa Democratic Party.

US Politics / Re: Pompeo Announces Suspension Of Nuclear Arms Treaty With Russia by Joshuajohn(m): 08:28 pm On 2 Feb 2019
admin:

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Friday that the US is suspending the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, a key pact with Russia that has been a centerpiece of European security since the Cold War.
"For years, Russia has violated the terms of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty without remorse," Pompeo said, speaking from the State Department. "Russia's violations put millions of Europeans and Americans at greater risk."
"It is our duty to respond appropriately," Pompeo said, adding that the US had provided "ample time" to Russia to return to compliance.

The long-expected suspension, which has raised concerns about a renewed arms race with Moscow and put European allies on edge, goes into effect on Saturday. Pompeo's announcement starts a 180-day clock to complete withdrawal unless Russia returns to compliance with the 1987 agreement.
President Donald Trump and his senior officials had been signaling for months that they were ready to pull out of the INF treaty, which the US accuses Moscow of violating since 2014.
'Full support'
"The United States has fully adhered to the INF Treaty for more than 30 years, but we will not remain constrained by its terms while Russia misrepresents its actions," Trump said in a statement Friday. "We cannot be the only country in the world unilaterally bound by this treaty, or any other."
Russia and the US are the only two parties to the treaty, but it significantly affects European security.
The ground-based nuclear tipped cruise missiles covered by the bilateral agreement can fly between 310 to 3,100 miles, making them a threat to Europe, where officials have unanimously backed the US decision, even as they consider their next steps and admit having little to no optimism that the treaty can be saved.
In a statement, NATO said America's allies "fully support" the US decision because of Russia's threat to Euro-Atlantic security and its refusal to provide any credible response or take any steps towards full and verifiable compliance.
NATO urged Russia to use the next six months to "return to full and verifiable compliance to preserve the INF Treaty."
Even as they voice support for the US decision, the prospect of the INF's dissolution is deeply worrying for Europe governments, where officials expressed deep concern about what the US decision will mean.

Russia is likely to use the US withdrawal as an excuse to deploy systems elsewhere, many analysts said, possibly unleashing an arms race of previously prohibited weapons systems.
"The bigger picture is what kind of sign you're sending out, what message you're sending," said one European official. "For us, this treaty was extremely important for our security. What are we looking at instead" if it is scrapped, the official asked.

CNN's Kylie Atwood and Veronica Stracqualursi contributed to this report.

World Politics / Re: 2019 Election: Sowore ‘winner’ Of ‘the Candidates’ Presidential Debate – Aac by Joshuajohn(m): 08:23 pm On 2 Feb 2019
Genjina:

The African Action Congress (AAC) has declared its presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore winner of ‘The Candidates’, a presidential town hall co-production between Daria Media and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), with support from the MacArthur Foundation.

Anchored by Kadaria Ahmed over the past four Wednesdays in January, presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), All Progressives Congress (APC), African Action Congress (AAC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have all featured on the programme.

A statement by Dr. Malcolm Fabiyi, Director-General of the Sowore 2019 Campaign, issued on Thursday, noted that “there was one winner from the series and that was Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress”.

The statement said: “Although Buhari and Atiku have artfully dodged a frontal debate with Sowore, ‘The Candidates’ placed all the candidates on the same platform, with the same interviewer. And for two hours, Nigerians had the opportunity to hear the presidential and vice presidential candidates of the four leading political parties in the country talk about their plans and programmes for Nigeria, as well as answer questions about their past. The town hall series was revealing. Nigerians have now had an opportunity to weigh their candidates for the highest offices in the land.

“Buhari demonstrated a worrying cluelessness about many of the goings on in the country. He frequently had to be prompted by his Vice President, as he failed to hear or comprehend most of the questions asked. Buhari seemed neither mentally present nor interested in Nigeria. The APC has no ideas for how to steer Nigeria away from the crippling problems of insecurity, power sector failures, growing unemployment, farmer-herdsmen conflicts and lack of affordable healthcare access that continues to plague Nigeria. One could almost be moved to sympathy for Buhari after his catatonic performance, if it weren’t for the vicious wickedness that is the intention of foisting a second term that would extend and double our misery, on Nigerians.

“Kingsley Moghalu and his running mate demonstrated that their ideas were as dated as those of the establishment they seek to replace. There were no bold plans to create jobs or to light up NIGERIA. There were no clear policy positions on how to address the challenges of insecurity and corruption. The town hall session also revealed the glaring lack of preparation of his vice presidential candidate. Suffice to say that his policies and heavy reliance on his previous stint as the deputy governor – a position that makes him complicit and responsible for a lot of the financial rot that Nigeria faces today – reveal him as being part and parcel of the establishment.

“Atiku and Obi proved yesterday, that all of our fears that electing the PDP would simply replace one layer of corruption with another more complex and pernicious one, were true. Atiku could not satisfactorily explain his part ownership of a company that did extensive business with the Ports Authority when he was still in the Nigerian Customs service. He could not explain the money laundering indictments and allegations made by the US Senate Homeland Security Committee. Peter Obi squirmed and faltered as he attempted to convince Nigerians that he was doing Anambra state a favour when he invested billions of the state’s money in a venture in which his family’s NEXT International Nigeria, was a major shareholder. It is now clear that Atiku and Peter Obi complement themselves well. They are two vultures with the same corrupt feathers. They had no clear plans for any of Nigeria’s most pressing issues. They were clear on one point though – they were willing to offer amnesty to all corrupt persons.

“We are thankful that despite the attempts to prevent Nigerians from seeing and contrasting Sowore with Buhari, Atiku and others on the national stage, the NTA – Daria Media Town Hall series provided objective points of contrast. Sowore demonstrated a masterful grasp of Nigeria’s issues. He showed amazing clarity in his vision for the country. Nigerians were able to learn first-hand that Sowore has been involved in the fight to move Nigeria forward for 30 years. Nigerians saw the courage of his plans and the strength of his conviction. Nigerians were reminded that he is the only candidate that committed to increasing power by 17,000 MW, doubling Nigeria’s road network from 200,000 km to 400,000 km, boosting our rail system from 3,700 km to 8,000 km, creating 5 million new jobs, paying workers a living wage of 100,000 Naira and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

“Nigerians also got to see that in Dr Rabiu Rufai, Sowore has a running mate who equally understands Nigeria’s challenges and has the intellect, integrity and political will to be a strong partner in the task of positively transforming Nigeria.”

World Politics / Re: Apc Vs Pdp: Buhari Replies Atiku On ‘undelivered Election Promises’ by Joshuajohn(m): 08:20 pm On 2 Feb 2019
Genjina:

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said he had delivered on his election promises.

He made the comment in apparent response to comment by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who said the Buhari administration had not been able to deliver on its three cardinal campaign promises in 2015.

The former vice president listed them as “security, economy and fight against corruption”.

Abubakar spoke at a town hall meeting tagged: ‘’The Candidates”, organised by the MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with NTA and DARIA media on Wednesday in Abuja.

Buhari, at his presidential campaign rally held at the Sani Abacha stadium, Kofar Mata, in Kano, said: “We promised to fight corruption, insecurity and improve the nation’s economy. We have been able to achieve a lot in these three critical areas”.

“There is nothing that prompted me to seek re-election beside my desire and commitment to correct the ills of the country.

“I was a Governor, Minister and Head of State and now a President. So, I need nothing less than to ensure that Nigeria attains greatness,” he said.

The president called on all supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to vote massively for the party to ensure its victory at the polls.

“There is nothing new I will tell you but I am here to thank you for taking the pains to wait patiently to see me,” he said.

He expressed satisfaction with the success recorded in the fight against insurgency in the North-East as most of the people displaced by the mayhem had returned to their respective towns and villages following the improvement of peace in the affected areas.

Buhari said that the decision by the Federal Government to ban the importation of rice had yielded good results as it had boosted rice production in the country and improved the socio-economic status of Nigerians.

Health / Re: Regular s*x Improves Brain Power- Study Confirms by Joshuajohn(m): 08:19 pm On 2 Feb 2019
Genjina:A study carried out by researchers from the University of Coventry and the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom, has revealed that regular s*xual activity could be linked to improved brain function in older adults.

The researchers found that people who had regular s*x scored higher on tests that measured their verbal fluency and their ability to visually perceive objects and the spaces between them.

According to sciencedaily.com, the study published in The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological and Social Sciences, involved 73 people aged between 50 and 83 years.
The participants filled questionnaires on how often, on the average, they had engaged in s*xual activity in the past 12 months and they answered questions about their general health and lifestyle.

The 28 men and 45 women also took part in a standardised test, which was typically used to measure different patterns of brain function in older adults, focusing on attention, memory, fluency, language and visuo-spatial ability.

The test included verbal fluency tests in which participants had 60 seconds to name as many animals as possible, and then to say as many words, beginning with the letter F, as they could.

The participants also took part in tests to determine their visuo-spatial ability, which included copying a complex design and drawing a clock face from memory.

The study noted that participants, who engaged in s*xual activities every week, had the highest scores in both sets of tests, with the verbal fluency tests showing the strongest effect.

The researchers said the results suggested that the frequency of s*xual activity was not linked to attention, memory or language as the participants performed well in these tests regardless of whether they reported weekly, monthly or had no s*x.

The lead researcher of the study, Dr Hayley Wright, from Coventry University’s Centre for Research in Psychology, Behaviour, and Achievement, said, “We can only speculate whether this is driven by social or physical elements, but an area we would like to research further is the biological mechanisms that may influence this.

“Every time we do another piece of research we are getting a little bit closer to understanding why this association exists at all, what the underlying mechanisms are and whether there is a ‘cause and effect’ relationship between s*xual activity and cognitive function in older people.

“People don’t like to think that older people have s*x, but we need to challenge this misconception at a societal level and look at what impact s*xual activity can have on those aged 50 and above, beyond the known effects on s*xual health and general wellbeing.”

Soyinka vows not to vote for Buhari, AtikuBy Mod - 1 hour ago - [ Update ]

Wole Soyinka

• Wike alleges plot to shut Internet access during polls
• Religious leaders task INEC, others on elections
•Defend democracy, Obasanjo tells Nigerians

Amid the campaigns for the forthcoming general elections, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, yesterday stated that neither President Muhammadu Buhari nor former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, would get his vote. Buhari is the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while Atiku is his counterpart in the major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Soyinka, who noted that the country was in an urgent need of a new direction, said little wonder there were so many opposition parties to take over governance. He spoke yesterday at the Freedom Park, Hospital Road, Lagos during an interactive session with the theme “Civic Choice In A Time Of Judicial ‘Penkelemes.’ ”

Soyinka disclosed that meetings were being held simultaneously in Lagos and Abuja to evolve a political platform that would produce a consensus candidate that would define his choice. He said there was no need for Nigerians to be enslaved permanently with the old discredited order of politicians.

“For the avoidance of doubt, let me make my position quite clear because I don’t want any ambiguity; I, Wole Soyinka, will not be voting for either of the two so-called contestants. I find both of them worthy of absolute rejection. For a number of reasons, I will not go into that and I am not interested in comparative assessment, it is too late for that.

“My position is simply that it is time for a totally new direction. Obviously I am not the only one, otherwise there will not be so many opposition parties wanting to take over the reins of government.“As I am speaking, there is a coalition having its meeting in Lagos, in which they hope to produce a consensus candidate. There is another group meeting in Abuja and at the end, they will send us their consensus candidate,” the Nobel laureate said.

According to him, “There are things going on in the background and there is need to change the direction of this nation in a positive way, and to make the public understand that they do not have to be enslaved permanently with the old discredited order.“I don’t believe in what is called negative vote, which means, for me, throwing your vote in a waste basket. I believe instead in a creative vote, not a protest vote, not a negative vote, but a creative vote. And a creative vote means that the will to at least sow a seed through your vote that will germinate eventually. The pace of germination is beyond the control of everyone, but it is never too early to make a beginning.”

On last week’s controversial suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen, by President Buhari and the appointment of an acting CJN, Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, Soyinka said every Nigerian government had tried to subjugate the judiciary in one form or the other.

“The judiciary is the best hope for the common citizens. No law, no democracy. No democracy, no society. Successive governments try and hamstring any kind of controlling force within government such as the judiciary. They do it in all sorts of ways. There is hardly any government here, even all the way back to the First Republic, that didn’t attempt to muzzle, destroy or degrade the judiciary in some ways. Methods differ. That is all.

“Oh! Sorry there are one or two exceptions. I would say that one former head of state was an exception. He never tampered with the judiciary. All he did was to ignore them completely, including their decisions. And of course, he locked up individuals without trials, people like Dele Faseun and the new Are Ona Kakanfo for months.“That is one way of respecting the judiciary. You don’t give them much work so you don’t bring people to trial. You just lock them away. I make that exception,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, human rights activist, Joe Odumakin, described Buhari’s removal of the CJN as a nullity.“If the rule of law is not obeyed, governors can wake up one day and do whatever they like. This is not a Banana Republic. Finding an alternative to the rule of law is creating penkelemes,” she said.

Elsewhere and in a different context, former President Olusegun Obasanjo who spoke on the situation in the country yesterday noted that despite the fact that the President Buhari’s leadership was under- performing and things might be gloomy in the nation, Nigerians should not despair but remain optimistic and vigilant.

Obasanjo charged Nigerians to rise and defend the country’s fledgling democracy, saying if Nigeria as a country must get it right, there must be good governance as well as free, fair and credible elections. He spoke yesterday in Abuja at the public presentation of a book entitled Politics as Dashed Hopes in Nigeria written by Dr. Auwalu Anwar.

“I am not in despair and I would ask the rest of us not to be in despair; our hope lies in democracy with good governance as one of the hallmarks, which is free, fair, transparent and credible elections.“I believe if we all see ourselves first as Nigerians and then we enunciate for ourselves the Nigerian dream, a land flowing with milk and honey, a land of opportunity, a land that gives you a stake in all that it is, I think, we will have a country that we can all be proud of.”

The former president, who promised to do everything humanly possible to safeguard the country’s democracy, noted that democratic rule without a strong opposition is akin to a marriage without a bridegroom to consummate it.Meanwhile, religious leaders in the country have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as well as security agencies to demonstrate total neutrality and impartiality during the general election.

They also charged the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, take steps to improve on the security situation in the country, particularly those areas being ravaged by insurgents, to ensure that elections hold in those places. In a statement issued yesterday on the meeting they held in Abuja last week, the religious leaders under the umbrella of “Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace”, said INEC should display its independence and be impartial in the conduct of the elections.

The statement jointly signed by the two co-chairmen of the forum, Bishop Sunday Onuoha and Alhaji Ishaq Kunle Sani, also urged government to engage in massive sensitization to call on all to embrace peace and eschew violence before, during and after the elections. Political, religious and traditional leaders and all relevant stakeholders should exercise restraint in their choice of words to avoid heating up the polity.

“Relevant stakeholders such as religious bodies, civil society organizations, town unions, youth groups have critical roles to play to douse the palpable tension and ensure hitch free elections. The statement charged politicians to see election as a platform to serve the people and should not instigate violence in the process.

The office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) has been accused of directing the INEC to connive with internet service providers to shut down internet access during the polls. Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State who made the allegation expressed reservation about the willingness of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to accept defeat if they lose the general election.

Wike, who spoke when members of the Savannah Centre Council on Peaceful and Violence-Free Election in Nigeria led by Prof. Ibrahim Gambari visited him at the Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday, explained that the directive to shut down internet access during the elections was geared at facilitating rigging.

“The national security adviser has met with INEC to ensure that internet service providers shutdown the internet, so that foreign bodies won’t see what’s happening in the country during the elections. They will jam all the frequencies and internet services to stop real time communication during the elections.”

Wike warned that the plot to manipulate the electoral process remained a major recipe for violence. He declared that those behind the scheme would not succeed in whatever they are planning as the world would be informed about their criminal activities. He stated that the alleged negative actions of the Buhari’s administration in recent times were indicative that they would not accept defeat when they lose the elections. Wike implored Buhari to emulate his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan who in 2015 placed Nigeria above personal consideration by conceding defeat even before the results were finally declared.

Traditional healer sues Uganda Speaker of Parliament for alleged breach of contract, seeks pay for charms he gave her 29 yearsBy Mod - 1 hour ago - [ Update ]

A traditional healer, who claims to have administered his spiritual powers and charm 29 years ago to propel Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga to political prominence, has taken her to court, demanding payment of Shs200m for alleged breach of contract.

According to Daily Monitor, Mr Damiano Akuze, in a suit filed before Jinja High Court on January 28, contends that on September 1, 1990, Ms Kadaga approached him at his shrine in Buwala, Buganda Zone, Lulyambuzi Parish in Kamuli District, seeking his traditional medicine to help her attain a successful political career.

He says he administered the traditional medicine on her, which has propelled her to current national prominence.

By Wednesday, the court had not summoned the Speaker to file her defence. The court will set the hearing date after she has filed her response to the suit. Efforts to contact Ms Kadaga for a comment on the matter were fruitless as she was reported to be chairing Parliament the whole day.

“The defendant (Speaker Kadaga) requested the plaintiff (traditional healer) to work on her so that she would be given a big job in government and also be driven in a convoy like a president. The defendant did not have money to pay the plaintiff at the time. So the plaintiff accepted to work on her on condition that she would pay the plaintiff as soon as she got the job,” the traditional healer alleges.

“The plaintiff worked on the defendant (Ms Kadaga) for two nights of September 1 and September 2, 1990, and the defendant acknowledged the good care that the plaintiff gave to her,” he adds.

Mr Akuze alleges that since Ms Kadaga’s visit to his shrine, he has been administering his traditional medicine on her. “Because of the above, the defendant (Ms Kadaga) has served as East African Assembly delegate, MP, minister and currently as the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda,” he avers.

“Immediately on the 3rd day of September 1990, the defendant (Ms Kadaga) was called by President Museveni and appointed minister and has since then held big positions in government,” he adds.

Mr Akuze alleges that since 1990, Ms Kadaga has paid him only Shs1m, which was in October 2017, and has since refused to pay him the balance of Shs204.5m.
He contends that Ms Kadaga had, in return for his traditional medicine, promised to construct for him a house worth Shs100m, give him Tipper truck worth Shs60m, a plot of land at Shs40m and four cows, among other rewards, making a combined worth of Shs204.5m.

“The defendant’s (Ms Kadaga) refusal to pay the plaintiff (witchdoctor) is in breach of the contract as the plaintiff did all his work and has been administering traditional medicine up to October 2017 as contracted by the defendant but the latter has, without reason, breached the contract,” Mr Akuze states in the suit.

“The plaintiff (Mr Akuze) has suffered mental anguish and inconveniences for which the defendant (Ms Kadaga) is held liable for general damages,” the suit reads in part.
The traditional healer says he will adduce evidence during the trial to prove that Ms Kadaga is in breach of the contract.

MSSN fetes women on World Hijab DayBy Mod - 2 hours ago - [ Update ]

Lagos State Naibatul Amirah Communication, Alhaja Bushrah Adeagbo-Jubril (left); Secretary General National, Alhaja Aisha Adams; Education Officer National, Alhaja Sherifah Ajala, National Naibatul Amirah Networking/Coordinator Social Advocacy Project:SAP of Al-Mu’minaat, Alhaja Sherifah Yusuf-Ajibade; National Amirah, Alhaja Nihmatullah Abdul Qadir; A member, and National Naibatul Amirah Communication, Hajia Mutiat Olusesi at the press conference on the World Hijab Day, held in Lagos.

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has felicitated with Muslims all over the world on the occasion of 2019 World Hijab Day.The group appealed to the school managements to obey the Lagos State directive on the use of hijab by giving the Muslim girls the atmosphere to learn and study like their mates in schools.

The Amirah, MSSN, Lagos State Area Unit, Hajia Basheerah Majekodunmi called on Nigerians, regardless of tribe or religion to all join this voice as part of solidarity with the Muslim women most especially the female secondary school pupils, who are brazenly and incessantly harassed and assaulted, because they wear hijab to schools in their own country.

She noted that the theme for this year’s World Hijab Day is Breaking Stereotypes and Shattering Boundaries which requires every Muslim girl in Hijab to know that it is in Hijab and worship of Allah that Muslimah (a Muslim lady) can find security and highest degree of modesty.” She added that with hijab, a lady could achieve her potentials and attain any heights in life.

“Long before now, it is widely believed or assumed that Hijab hinders or serves as barriers against academic excellence, but this has been proved wrong with the cases of Asiyah Abdulkareem, a one-day Commissioner for Education in Lagos State and Barrister Amasa Firdaus who was called to the bar with her Hijab, among others.

“Also the story of the youngest medical doctor we ever had, Dr. Maryam Raji is still very fresh in our memory. The tide has actually changed and it is rather unfortunate that propaganda no longer sells. Before we got to where we are now on the issue of hijab, there were several legal engagements with the intervention of our lead Counsel, Adetola Kazeem (SAN) of blessed memory (May Allah grant him eternal rest), she said.

She underscored the authorization by the Appeal Court for Muslim members to adorn the hijab in their respective schools. “We took all these steps, because we believe in due process. We respect the laws of the land and all constituted authorities and the court. Ordinarily, people would expect us to go the violent way, but we won’t, because we are learned and peace loving people. It is just some people that have remained adamant in abusing the fundamental human rights that we are meant to enjoy in our own country.

“After some time, the Lagos State Government issued a circular (a circular of that nature is also equivalent to the law of the state) to all principals of public secondary schools instructing them to allow pupils, who want to wear the hijab on their uniforms. This is an indication that this is a government that listens, a government that recognizes the rule of law, a government that is aware that the right of an individual must not be infringed upon.

“But, it is unfortunate that what we see is that school managements and some defiant teachers are working against the Lagos State Government in its efforts to achieve peaceful coexistence of the diverse people of the state and ultimately to jeopardize law and order.

“We’ve now seen that some school principals, vice principals and teachers feign ignorance of approval of Hijab in Lagos State, while some people deliberately want to express putrid hatred for hijab by discriminating and molesting the Muslim students in Hijab.
“Meanwhile, they must note that their actions and inactions have caused our members huge emotional and psychological trauma that they now feel hated and rejected in their own country.”

Detained Cameroon opposition head accused of rebellionBy Mod - 11 hours ago - [ Update ]

(Photo by MARCO LONGARI / AFP)

Authorities in Cameroon on Thursday banned planned protest marches in the capital Yaounde after a series of unauthorised anti-government demonstrations and some 200 arrests, including the detention of main opposition leader Maurice Kamto.

Former government minister Kamto, who claims to have been cheated out of the presidency in last year’s elections, was arrested in the economic capital Douala on Monday.

His lawyers have said he is under investigation for alleged insurrection.

Four planned marches, scheduled for Friday and Saturday and the following week, are prohibited for the “preservation of public order”, said area administrator Jean-Claude Tsila in a statement read out on state radio.

The organisers of the marches have been asked to “give up their plans”, the statement added.

Opposition marches took place in several towns last weekend, protesting against the reelection of Cameroon’s veteran leader Paul Biya.

Biya, 85, won a seventh consecutive term in last October’s disputed presidential election with 71 percent of the vote, according to the official results. He has held power for 36 years.

Kamto came second in the election with 14 percent.

Late on Wednesday, Kamto’s lawyers said eight charges had been levelled against him and some 200 other detainees, including “group rebellion” and “hostility to the homeland”.

He is also accused of “insurrection”, “breaching the peace” and “incitement to insurrection”.

All of the detainees face the same allegations, according to lawyer Sylvain Souop, member of a team of 15 lawyers.

“The ‘facts’ have been defined even before the people have been heard,” he said.

On Wednesday Souop met with Kamto, who was detained by an elite police unit called the Special Operations Group.

“He is well, his morale is good and he was interrogated (on Wednesday) in the presence of the director general of the criminal investigation division,” Souop said.

‘Destabilise’ the government
After the weekend protests, Communications Minister Rene Emmanuel Sadi accused Kamto and his party, the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC), of trying to “destabilise” the government.

Anti-government protests also took place in some European capitals at the weekend, with Cameroonian demonstrators breaking into the country’s embassies in France and Germany.

In Paris, they smashed pictures of Biya and caused other damage.

MRC party officials have denied organising the protests abroad.

“Kamto denounces this vandalism in diplomatic missions. He has never sent anyone to break anything,” Souop said.

A former justice minister under Biya, Kamto “has confidence in the justice of Cameroon”, Souop said.

Other people detained by the authorities include MRC activists and the party treasurer Alain Fogue.

Security forces also arrested two Cameroonian journalists on Monday night, confusing them for political activists, according to the national journalists’ union.

Both men were still in detention on Thursday.

Press freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders on Thursday said a journalist was assaulted “by three unidentified individuals as he was leaving his house” but did not specify whether the attack was related to his work.

‘Escalating crackdown’
In a statement on Thursday, the National Council of Communication (CNC) said it had noted a rise in “calls for sedition or incitement to tribal hatred” in the media and on social networks.

The CNC “calls on all those involved in the media sector to show professionalism and responsibility in the collection, processing and dissemination of information intended for the public”, wrote CNC president Peter Essoka.

Human rights groups have condemned Kamto’s arrest and called for his immediate release.

Analysts say the authorities view Kamto as a threat.

“It’s been a long time since Cameroon had an opposition figure of this stature,” Hans de Marie Heungoup from the think tank International Crisis Group told AFP in Libreville.

Business/Investments / Re: How To Make $500+ Monthly From Google by Joshuajohn(m): 08:11 pm On 2 Feb 2019
Vinner:Google is the most used search engine in the world, so we can call it the king of search engines...Lol!
We all know that the owners of these search engines (no matter how small) make money from them, if not they would have closed up along time ago. Have you ever imagined how fun it will be to make your own money from this king of all search engines?
We recently published an article on the easiest ways to make $400+ monthly as a student, and we are here with this now. In this article, we will be showing you (some of) the easiest ways to make a living off the largest social network in the world.

There are so many ways to make money online from Google, depending on your niche. We will be seeing a few of these plenty ways such as:
- Blogging: We have always talked about blogging, and will ever be. This is because of the dozens of opportunities and ways blogging has created for me. You can be turning in as much as $1,500 monthly as a blogger [ see more here] and yet have other jobs.
Now to make money as a blogger, you need to be a SEO guru, except you have a lot of money to invest in ads. Our blog, InfoGuideAfrica.com was started in the year 2017 but with good SEO strategies, we are now turning in 4000 daily visitors. It is not our first blog, and of course we have other traffic sources, but a good number of them come from the search engines.

One of the advantages of the search engine traffic is that if is unlimited. With social media, you are reaching out to the same circle of followers and they would rarely purchase your products or services twice but it's not the same case with search engine traffic. With the later, as long as you are still tanking for the keyword, plenty other search engine users will keep on discovering your sites and becoming your fans.
As they see your products and services, they also will patronize you.

- Vlogging: Vlogging or YouTubing is also another awesome way to make money from the Google search engine. We recently published an article on how you can make as much as $3,000 monthly from YouTube [ see it here].
One of the reasons I prefer vlogging to blogging is that you spare yourself the headache of purchasing and renewing hosting plans and domain names. You just need to get a perfect video editor, neat camera (whether phone or camera) and the right approaches. Once you make your videos, if they are interesting, you will begin to rank well with them in search engine results and then you can begin to make money from them!

- E-Commerce: With eCommerce, you sell your products and services online. From Amazon to the lowest eBook seller out there, they are all into eCom. The only issues eCommerce businesses face are the lack of proper sales pages and write-ups, and inability to drive proper traffic to them.
Nairaland is looking for traffic, Konga is looking for conversions so you need to know what you are looking for. However, no matter which one you need, the search engine is a must for you!

- Affiliate Marketing: Affiliate marketing is simply earning of commissions for referring people to make purchases of goods and services. At times they could just need to sign-up and you make your own money. It is a huge way of making money online. Some of the top Nigerian companies like Jumia and Konga all have affiliate programs which you should join.
One of the best ways to generate sales for yourself is to get massive traffic to your sales pages, and the easiest way to do this is either through the paid social media ads or free search engine ads. Make a choice today!

- Cost Per Action: CPA or Cost Per Action is another way to make money from the search engines. With Peerfly alone, you can be making $800+ monthly from it and I reviewed it here.
With search engine traffic, you do not need to bear the headache of spending your money on ads anymore. All you do is hit publish and you begin to get traffic back to yourself. You can even run AdWords campaigns and Bing ads to help yourself rank above the competitors.

There are so many other ways to make money from the search engines, whether free or paid. If you enjoyed this article, kindly drop us a comment and share! We cannot cover all the ways to make money from the search engines on a single blog post, because it may never end.

To make money online, you need to be smart! Your consumers don't know you personally so whatever you tell them that you are, that exactly they will take you for.
Happy earning!

Business/Investments / Re: Bill Gates Give Carrier Advice That Could Help You Make Money by Joshuajohn(m): 08:03 pm On 2 Feb 2019
Vinner:When you hear the name Bill Gates, what do you think of? Computers, philanthropy, spectacles?

No of course not, you think of mooooney, moolah, cash dollar bills. And as one of the richest people in the world, it's worth taking note when he dispenses career advice.

The Microsoft founder has amassed a fortune in the region of $95 billion (£74 billion), according to Forbes, and spends most of his time and money nowadays on charitable projects with his foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation... which is annoying in that it makes you feel guilty for your green-eyed hatred.

But rather than enviously loath him, why not listen to some of his career advice?

While discussing the subject of clean energy, the 63-year-old dispensed some advice for college and university students, highlighting three specific subject areas that he expects to be in demand in the future.

Speaking to Linkedin executive editor, Daniel Roth, he said: "I do think basic knowledge of the sciences, math skills, economics [is necessary]. A lot of careers in the future will be very demanding on those things."

That's zero out of three for me then. Guess it boils down to that ever puzzling decision: to enjoy one's life or make shit loads of money? Unless you're one of those weirdos who actually enjoys maths or economics, in which case you're laughing.

Gates also advised people to consider how specific fields may shift in years to come, before embarking upon a career in said field.

He said: "How are they likely to revolutionise the field that you are in? Even if you are thinking about sales or marketing, the rules of the game will change because of the digital revolution."

But while the software expert has emphasised the importance of keeping with the times, he has also in the past illuminated the importance of balancing the use of technology with more traditional pastimes.

The billionaire revealed earlier this year that he limited his children's access to technology when they were growing up, not giving them mobiles until they were 14

Speaking to the Mirror, he said: "We often set a time after which there is no screen time and, in their case, that helps them get to sleep at a reasonable hour.

"We didn't give our kids cell phones until they were 14 and they complained other kids got them earlier."

Fair enough really. Your dad is one of the richest people in the world, and the founder of Microsoft no less, yet while all your classmates are having fun texting each other with their bluetooth iPads, you're bored out of your mind playing poo sticks.

Romance / Re: Men:how To Answer "the Question Were Did You Get My Number From? by Joshuajohn(m): 07:56 pm On 2 Feb 2019
Vinner:You might still be single because you failed to answer a simple question, "where did you get my number from?"

This is one of the hardest questions for boychild in his search for a new catch.

Ladies always set this question to either turn you off or to try and find out your honesty level.

Most men will prefer to end the communication because the person who gave you the phone number warned you not expose him, or you got the number through dubious means.

Here are a few tips to answer the question that may take communication to the next level:

1. Be honest

You must be honest; you never know what quality in a man the girl child is looking for.

However, you must be innovative to keep the conversation going.

If you got the number from a friend, just explain to her.

2. Be creative

Creativity will help you come past this nightmare.

Flattering her about her beauty, the shape of her body or general look might be a good idea.

After all, who doesn't like to be flattered? Unless she is pissed off with you.

3. Engage her

You should never show that you are too interested or chasing after desperately her, play your cards safe.

Let her know that you are mature and you can run a conversation

Postsmania General / Re: Us Imposes Visa Restrictions On Ghana Over Refusal To Take Deportees by Joshuajohn(m): 07:54 pm On 2 Feb 2019
wraymix:The US Department of Homeland Security on Thursday announced that it will stop issuing some visas to citizens of Ghana, following the government’s refusal to take back citizens the US has tried to deport.

“Ghana has failed to live up to its obligations under international law to accept the return of its nationals ordered removed from the United States,” Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said.

“The United States routinely cooperates with foreign governments in documenting and accepting US citizens when asked, as appropriate, as do the majority of countries in the world, but Ghana has failed to do so in this case. We hope the Ghanaian government will work with us to reconcile these deficiencies quickly.”

Nielsen asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to sanction visas this week, and the top diplomat instructed US consular officers in Ghana to impose visa restrictions on certain categories of applicants, which the DHS statement did not specify.

Gang threatens Mexican president over fuel theft crackdownBy Mod - 4 minutes ago - [ Update ]

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador waves to the public during a visit to the town of Acambay in the state of Mexico on January, 22, 2019. – An explosion and fire in central Mexico on the eve killed at least 93 people after hundreds converged on the site of an illegal fuel-line tap to gather gasoline amid the government crackdown on fuel theft, officials said. (Photo by ALFREDO ESTRELLA / AFP)

A suspected criminal gang left a fake bomb and threatening message for Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador outside an oil refinery Thursday, warning him to stop his crackdown on fuel theft.

Since taking office in December, Lopez Obrador has been waging war on rampant theft from state oil company Pemex’s pipelines, a massive criminal industry involving drug cartels and corrupt officials that cost Mexico an estimated $3 billion in 2017.

The message, written on a bed sheet near the Salamanca refinery in the central state of Guanajuato, warned the leftist leader to withdraw the army and other security forces from the state.

“Otherwise I am going to start killing them, along with innocent people,” said the message, signed by a group calling itself the Puro Cartel Santa Rosa de Lima.

It was accompanied by what appeared to be a bomb left inside a pickup truck outside the refinery. However, officials later said the package, which had a small light and numerous white wires, was a fake.

“False alarm,” Lopez Obrador said at his daily news conference.

“There were no explosives in the abandoned pickup truck,” presidential spokesman Jesus Ramirez told journalists.

“Obviously this is connected to the anti-fuel theft operations.”

The message also called for the release of suspects recently arrested as part of the government’s crackdown.

Lopez Obrador, an anti-establishment austerity crusader, famously disbanded the presidential guard when he took office. Security analysts have warned his safety could be at risk.

The president’s standard response is, “The people will protect me.”

Entertainment / Re: Why There Is Too Much Crap Music In The Market -2baba Reveals by Joshuajohn(m): 05:37 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Primeauto:Why There Is Too Much Crap Music In The Market -2Baba Reveals

To say that wishy-washy songs have now flooded the Nigerian music market would not be far from the truth; little wonder Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba is of the same opinion. In a chat with E-Daily, the singer proved his worth as an afro-pop music legend when it comes to diagnosing challenging issues in the Nigerian music industry.

“The crap music all over the place now is because the gate keepers play good songs when people are asleep at night; when there is no one to listen to the music. So if you do that kind of music and you take it to the radio and they refuse to play it, what do you do? And most of the financial back up artistes get is from people who want to make their money back immediately. People are afraid of investing their money on artistes who sing good music.
"Though the music will still be entertaining but the ear of the people has changed. You and I know that on a normal day it is good music we listen to, except when we go to parties. The youths have their mind tuned to the kind of music being made now; it’s difficult to remove it. It has to be a deliberate action to do so”,

he said.
Speaking further, he took a swipe at the National Broadcasting Commission, lamenting how the regulatory body’s value systems have changed drastically.

“Before NBC is able to ban any music, it has gone popular already. That means they didn’t even hear it on time in the first place. It’s after the song has gone viral that they will want to ban it. No one is doing any work. It is very important that we have a responsible government and to have that we must have responsible people because if we don’t have responsible people, this is the kind of government we will keep having”, he noted.

Entertainment / Re: Television Producer Dies After Setting Himself Ablaze by Joshuajohn(m): 05:35 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Emmaronad2:An Algerian television producer died from severe burns Thursday more than two weeks after setting himself on fire over unpaid wages, his son told AFP.

Youcef Goucem, 61, doused himself in flammable liquid and lit it in the offices of private channel Dzair TV on January 7 after claiming he had not been paid for work on a soap opera in 2017.

His desperate act stirred emotions in Algeria, with a hundred professionals working in television and cinema decrying the “anxiety” they face on the job.

dave91:Everything you need to live well
English actress Maisie Williams who plays Arya Stark in popular HBO SERIES “Game Of Thrones” doesn’t think any of the Game of Thrones cast members will be happy when the show comes to an end.
The 21-year-old actress has somewhat come to terms with the end of the series, but admitted that it’s going to be difficult to move on during an interview with Sky News.
“I don’t think anyone is going to be satisfied [when it ends],” she said. “I don’t think anyone wants it to end, but I’m really proud of this final season. I’ve always felt ashamed to say things like that but I am.”
Williams began playing Arya in 2011 at the age of 14, so it’s not surprising to hear that adjusting to life beyond the show will be difficult. She shot her last scenes for the series back in July and is just waiting for the show to be finished.
“It’s going to be really weird when it’s done and every day it’s a step closer to it not being a part of my life anymore,” she said. “People are going to come up to me on the street and say ‘Weren’t you on that show?’ and that’s going to be bizarre.”
Williams is already plotting a life beyond the wildly popular series. Back in August, she launched an app meant to foster connections between individuals working in creative fields like art, fashion and entertainment called “Daisie”.

The veteran rapper born Earl Simmons went to jail in January 2018 on a bail violation after previously pleading guilty to tax evasion in November 2017. In March 2018, DMX was sentenced to one year in prison for felony tax evasion.
DMX was scheduled to be released on 27 January, but in a report by Vulture, inmates are allowed to be released on Friday if their release date falls on a weekend.
His lawyer Murray Richman told the news site yesterday: "He's coming home tomorrow. I spoke to him; he's very happy.
"He's looking forward to being home. He's never been hotter than now - people have been seeking him out all over.
Mr Richman added that DMX was 'terrific' in jail and didn't become a target because of his celebrity status.

Temi and Mr Eazi became an item in 2017 and made their affair public when they attended the wedding of the son of billionaire businesswoman, Folorunsho Alakija in London.

Mr Eazi reacts to speculations he is dating Temi Otedola because of her father

Many people have insinuated that he in a relationship with Temi because of her father's money. However in this new interview with Vanguard, Mr Eazi said he doesn't care what he people think of his relationship.

''I feel like at the end of the day what comes out of me is in me. You know people can say what they want to say. If you put your ears down and react to what they say, you won’t live, especially when you are in the limelight. “You have to realize that your life is now entertainment for people. I don’t care about what people think.

If your self-esteem is based on how much is in your bank account then you have a very serious self-esteem issue. So my mind, myself-worth has nothing to do with my account. I have had experiences of ups and downs so if my self-worth was based on material things I would have killed my self”he said.

Legendary musician, 2face Idibia in a recent interview with E-Daily highlighted some of the challenges facing the Nigerian music industry.

According to the veteran, “the crap music all over the place now is because the gate keepers play good songs when people are asleep at night; when there is no one to listen to the music. So if you do that kind of music and you take it to the radio and they refuse to play it, what do you do? And most of the financial back up artistes get is from people who want to make their money back immediately’.

2face Idibia went on to say, ‘people are afraid of investing their money on artistes who sing good music..Though the music will still be entertaining but the ear of the people has changed. You and I know that on a normal day it is good music we listen to, except when we go to parties. The youths have their mind tuned to the kind of music being made now; it’s difficult to remove it. It has to be a deliberate action to do so’, he said.

Speaking further, he took a swipe at the National Broadcasting Commission, lamenting how the regulatory body’s value systems have changed drastically.

Before NBC is able to ban any music, it has gone popular already. That means they didn’t even hear it on time in the first place. It’s after the song has gone viral that they will want to ban it. No one is doing any work.

It is very important that we have a responsible government and to have that we must have responsible people because if we don’t have responsible people, this is the kind of government we will keep having

Popular Nigerian blogger, Linda Ikeji has taken to her social media space to reveal how she decided to end poverty after her parents were assaulted over 70 naira.

She wrote:

'I was 16. I was standing there watching the insult being hurled and a little assault over N70. I saw the sadness and embarrassment as they saw I was witnessing it.

They told me to leave but I refused and stood there and watched. After it was over I told myself as I walked home in tears; in this life, except there's no God, nobody will ever insult them again over money. I don't care how long it will take, but I will fight poverty with everything in me. The following year at 17, I started my hustle.

This smile is gratitude for how far I've come. For all the dreams that came through. For all the things I am grateful for and for all the amazing things that's about to happen (which will be announced soon). This smile is to encourage you not to give up on yourself no matter how hard it gets and to encourage you to fight poverty with everything you are. The view from where I am standing is amazing and I'd like for you to experience it. May your legit hustle pay off...and soon. Amen! '

Entertainment / Re: ‘my Fans Can Drool But Can’t Touch’ by Joshuajohn(m): 04:03 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Truevine:Since childhood, Blessing Akhere had always
desired to sing. Known in music circle as Akhere,
the Economics graduate and former model who
currently works in the aviation sector, is making
her mark in the music industry. Akhere, who
recently recorded a song, ‘On My Mind’, speaks
with JOE AGBRO JR about growing up, the
struggles of the industry and her aspiration.
Excerpts
How did music start for you?
Music is my passion. I fell in love with music very
early in life. And I used to remember making
sounds, very beautiful sounds at age five. Even as
young as I was, I was aware that I loved music
and I could make very beautiful sounds. As a
child, I longed to be part of the choir, the senior
choir actually. But of course, you have to start
from the children’s choir.
In which church?
Brotherhood of the Star and Cross. And I had a
very good choir master who was able to help me.
Initially, I started as an alto singer. I was
fantastic as an alto singer but I don’t know what
happened. One day, we were doing a choir
practice and rehearsal and I was switched. They
switched me from alto to treble and that was the
beginning. I was like, ‘wonderful’ is an
understatement when it comes to singing the
soprano. From there, as I grew older, I started to
write songs. I migrated to writing secular songs. I
wrote my first eight songs while I was still in the
university. I was able to come up with a complete
album. And by the time I finished university, as
much as I loved music, music wasn’t appreciated
then. That was around 2005 because I finished
university around 2008. So, I just thought the
sensible thing to do at that point is to just get a
monthly job. That’s how I found myself flying.
The Nigerian music industry is a very
competitive. What are you bringing to carve a
niche for yourself?
Trying to be unique in my own way. I don’t want
to be someone else. I just want to be me. And I
believe the sky is big enough for everyone. We
might probably not get there at the same time
but as long as there is life, then I’m still pushing.
One of your songs, ‘Irin Ise’ (Man of Steel)
trended not long ago. What was the motivation
for the song?
There is a story behind it. Initially, my past
relationship actually gave birth to that song. At
the point I wrote this song, the relationship meant
so much to me. That sanity and happiness and
contentment you want in a relationship was there.
And I never imagined it was ever going to end but
that’s life for you. You have to give it your best
shot which is what I did. The love around the
relationship at that point led to that song.
So, are you back to being single?
Do I have to talk about that? I don’t think I want
to talk about that. Anyone who comes close
would get to know if I am single or off the market
eventually.
You’re a beautiful lady and some men would be
attracted to you. How has the interest in you
from the opposite s*x been like?
Well, I get that a lot. I handle them as they come.
Can you share an experience?
To a large extent, I think they’ve been able to
behave themselves.
So, what has a fan really done to you that you
feel ‘this is too outrageous’?
Like I said, I have not really had any terrible
experience. They’re able to keep their hands to
themselves even if they drool which is fine by me.
They can look and drool but can’t touch. To a
large extent, they are well-behaved.
So, no one has attempted to touch?
No one has tried to touch indecently.
When we look at the music sector, there is a way
females are portrayed as s*x symbols, especially
in music videos. How do you see that trend?
Well, I think everybody has the right to dress the
way they want to even though there is a saying
that says ‘dress the way you want to be
addressed.’ At the end of the day, I’m sure if they
do that for a video, probably the job warrants
them at that point because that is the contract
they have signed to do that way. But it’s not
enough for anyone to want to look at them as
s*x objects. I think it has to do with one’s
perspective about life. I have my own limits when
it comes to dress sense. I can’t go further beyond
a particular limit.
But for anyone who feels free to bare it all, it’s
not enough licence for anyone to think she’s
cheap. And the man should also have control. So,
don’t blame it on the girl because she is exposed
dress-wise, then you think you can lunge yourself
on her indecently. The girl also has a right to get
down with whoever she wants to get down with.
So, it just has to do with individual perspective
about life. We are responsible for our actions.
How do you combine your work and music?
It’s tough because flying alone drains you. So, I
still don’t know how I have been able to combine
flying with music because music on its own when
I was doing fulltime music, takes a lot of my
time. And when I ask myself how I have been
able to cope, the only answer is my passion for
music. Even when I want to give up, it’s not
something I can easily give away. I’ve tried
keeping away from it but it keeps on coming
back.
How do you relax?
Once in a while, I like to go dancing. It helps
relieve my stress. But most of the time, I don’t
even have that time to go dancing as often as I
want. What I do is I always have my earpiece
with me. When it blasts my head for a while, it’s
more like it massages my brain and makes me
calm down. When I get home, I still have it on the
speaker. So, when the music is playing, I’m
moving around at my pace doing things. The only
time I turn off the music is when I want to pray
and want to go to bed.
How do you stay athletic and beautiful?
I try to exercise on my own. I’ve never been to
the gym. Whatever exercise I do, I do it within the
four walls of my room.
How about relationships?
Right now, I’m busy with myself.
So, no space for any man?
When the right man comes along.
So, what are the criteria for the right man?
Of course, he has to be God-fearing. He needs to
love me. I don’t want a Master-Slave relationship.
Someone I can trust and find sanity and
happiness with. If he is good-looking, it’s an
added plus. But he has to be very presentable.
And he should be able to speak good English.

emmynwah:Thousands of people in Germany have signed a change.org online petition calling for two concerts by controversial US singer R Kelly not to go ahead.
On Friday, almost 22,000 people had signed the online petition, the motto of which is “Don’t give s*xual offenders a stage.’’

The petition calls for concerts planned in Ludwigsburg in southern Germany on April 12 and in the northern port city of Hamburg on April 14 to be cancelled due to allegations of s*xual misconduct against the artist.

In a six-part documentary series aired on Lifetime in the US., Kelly is accused of manipulating women and controlling their lives, in addition to numerous accusations of s*xual misconduct.

However, the singer has rejected the allegations.

Report says whether the protest will be effective remains to be seen.

The concert organisers were not available for comment.

A municipal official in Hamburg told dpa that a binding contract had been signed for the 7,000-seat venue Hamburger Sporthalle for April 14.

It was up to the German agency organising the concerts to decide whether the concert should go ahead.

admin:Struggling to sell one multi-million dollar home currently on the market won’t stop actress and singer Jennifer Lopez from expanding her property collection.

Lopez has reportedly added to her real estate holdings an eight-plus acre estate in Bel-Air anchored by a multi-level mansion. The property, complete with a 30-seat screening room, a 100-seat amphitheater and a swimming pond with sandy beach and outdoor shower, was asking about $40 million, but J. Lo managed to make it hers for $28 million.

As the Bronx native acquires a new home in California, she is trying to sell a gated compound in the Golden State. The 17,000-square-foot Hidden Hills property with mountain and city views boasts nine bedrooms, including a master suite with private terrace and an entertainment wing, which includes a 20-seat theater, dance studio, and recording studio.

Lopez bought the property in 2010 with her then-husband and singer Marc Anthony for $8.2 million. She first tried to sell it for $17 million, but unable to find a suitable buyer, she has been forced to cut the price twice in less than a year, to $14.5 million in September and to the current $12.5 million earlier this year.

Entertainment / Re: Nelson Mandela by Joshuajohn(m): 03:56 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Peazalo:President Paul Kagame has portrayed late Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa and pan Africanist as an African model worth to emulate.

“South Africa! This evening, I join you to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela. He never gave up on Africa. He believed that Africa’s children can achieve anything,” Kagame said at the Global Citizen Festival in South Africa, Sunday December 2.

“Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100” was organised to mark the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth and honour his legacy, particularly his call to “Be The Generation to End Extreme Poverty.”

Themed “Ensuring Quality Nutrition and Health for All,” the Festival is a Pop and Policy music festival featuring various artists and keynote speakers. The latter include world leaders and private sector players.

Global Citizen is a media and advocacy organisation based in New York that engages young people around the world to achieve progress in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Since 2012, 14,2 million actions by Global Citizens have helped generate commitments and policy announcements from leaders across the world valued at over USD 37.9 billion.

These commitments are set to help improve the lives of more than 2.25 billion people around the globe.

For Kagame, this is Mandela’s legacy that should never be taken for granted.

“It is our responsibility to continue building on his legacy. We must commit to ensuring good nutrition for our children, and eliminating the preventable diseases that threaten Africa’s potential,” the president said.

“We must get the most out of our agriculture and health systems, which hold massive potential to create jobs and prosperity for all.”

On top of this, the president defended what he believes that would make Africa a thriving continent- trading in and with each other.

“As Africans, we also want to move freely around our continent, do business with each other, and build friendships across borders,” Kagame said.

He called upon the youth to be advocates of African change.

Earlier on at a SDG Reception hosted by Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway and President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, Kagame recognised the hosts for their efforts and commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Kagame said, that the energised network Global Citizen has created, “is a good example of the support that the SDGs continues to attract.”

Harry Anyanwu in a new interview with Punch, revealed why he lives like a young man even at 59.

The Nollywood actor who is known to have a healthy relationship with young entertainers as he is usually seen in the company with young musicians and actors, told Punch's correspondent that “age is just a number”.

“MOST OF MY FRIENDS ARE FROM THE YOUNGER GENERATION. I WILL SOON BE 60 YEARS OLD BUT I DON’T BEHAVE LIKE A 60-YEAR-OLD-MAN; LIFE IS SIMPLE. MY CHILDREN KNOW ME VERY WELL AND THEY ARE USED TO HOW I BEHAVE,” HE SAID.

“I JOINED NOLLYWOOD AROUND 2011/2012 AND I HAVE HAD BOTH GOOD AND BAD EXPERIENCES. NOTHING HAS MADE ME DERAIL FROM BEING AN ACTOR; IT IS LIKE MY LAST RESORT AFTER ALL I HAVE BEEN THROUGH IN LIFE. I REALISED THAT I WAS PREDESTINED TO BE AN ACTOR.

“BEFORE I GOT INTO ACTING, I USED TO WORK IN A BANK. THE ONLY CONSTANT THING IN LIFE IS CHANGE, I NEVER KNEW I WAS GOING TO END UP IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY, IT JUST HAPPENED. MY LIFE IS MUCH BETTER NOW THAN IT WAS BEFORE I JOINED NOLLYWOOD. EVEN THOUGH I READ ACCOUNTANCY, I WASN’T SURE OF WHAT I WANTED TO DO. SO WHEN I RETURNED TO NIGERIA, I WAS HANGING OUT WITH POLITICIANS WITH THE HOPE THAT I WOULD FIND GREENER PASTURES, BUT IT NEVER HAPPENED.

“AFTER I HAD AN ACCIDENT IN 2010, I WAS IN A COMA FOR ABOUT TWO HOURS; THAT WAS WHEN I MADE THE DECISION TO JOIN NOLLYWOOD BECAUSE I WAS THINKING THAT WHAT IF I HAD LOST MY LIFE. I KNEW IT WAS TIME TO CHANGE THE GAME IN LIFE. IT IS NOT LIKE THE JOURNEY HAS BEEN SMOOTH, BUT I KEEP PUSHING,” HE SAID.

Entertainment / Re: How I Was Detained For Being The Only Black Person On A Plane - Nigerian Singer Adokiye Reveals by Joshuajohn(m): 03:52 pm On 1 Jan 2019
tayofans:
Singer, Adokiye Kyrian, shares exciting memories of her trip to Kingston, England, with JOY MARCUS
What’s the most memorable trip you’ve been on recently?
I have been to a lot of places but I had a horrific experience in Kingston, southwest London, not too long ago.
What happened there?
I did a bungee jump where they tied me to a strong metal and I jumped. It was a very scary experience for me. It was just like sky diving. It was very daring but I enjoyed the experience. At some point, I thought I was going to fall. It was mind-blowing. I must say that being in Kingston was so much fun and they had lots of food as well.
Why did you choose Kingston?
I went there on vacation but I travelled alone. My cousins live there; so, I knew I was going to enjoy myself.
Did you notice anything peculiar about the place?
I noticed that there are not so many black people over there. There was a time I was scared because most places I visited were full of only white people. However, it is an exciting place and the serenity is divine. Also, I noticed that there were a lot of elite there.
What places did you visit while you were there?
It is a residential area; they don’t really have tourist sites. You cannot compare it with Greece which has lots of tourist attractions. That is why I am planning to go there (Greece) for another vacation.
Which of their meals excited your taste buds?
Mostly, they served English continental dishes. I also noticed that they ate a lot of meat, vegetables, pastas and cheese. I think their meals are very nice.
What can you say about their fashion sense?
It is in the United Kingdom, so, they dress well. Their men and women are conservatively dressed, unlike the Americans.
How was the weather like when you travelled?
It was snowed when I visited; everywhere was very cold. There were days I regretted travelling because I could not move around and visit places as a result of the weather.
How were you able to pay for the things you bought?
I had my dollar card and any time I bought anything, I paid with it. I also withdrew money from automated teller machines.
Do you think Kingston is expensive compared to other countries you have been too?
There are things that are cheaper there and some that are expensive. Some clothes there are sold cheaper than in other places I have visited but their shoes are quite expensive.
Since the area is dominated by white people, did you experience any form of racism?
Kingston is populated by white people so I was careful because I didn’t want to be exposed to racism. However, they are quite receptive people. They are welcoming and nice. But I experienced racism when I was connecting from John F. Kennedy Airport, New York, to London. We had to stop at the airport for checks. I was the only black person on the queue. So, some policemen and other law enforcement officers asked me to leave with them. This made me so scared because I thought someone had planted an illegal substance in my bag. They asked for my passport and took me to a special room where I was detained for some minutes. They asked me questions about where I was going and some other irrelevant things. I wasn’t even allowed to be on the same queue with the other white people. To me, that was racism at its peak.
What other country do you have in mind to visit?
I am planning to go to Santorini, Greece, where most of the buildings are painted white and the water is sky blue. The place is romantic; so, it is advised that you visit with your partner. Also, I will like to visit Seychelles and Zanzibar.
What would you tell someone who wants to visit Kingston for the first time?
Travel and have fun but remember you are going to another country; so, you have to be careful. Try and get as much safety tips as possible so you won’t run into trouble.

Health / Re: Lassa Fever: Plateau Records Five Deaths, 17 Confirmed Cases by Joshuajohn(m): 07:48 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Genjina:Plateau has recorded 17 confirmed cases of Lassa Fever with five persons killed, according to Dr Kunden Deyin, the states health commissioner.

Deyin said on Sunday in Jos that 33 cases were taken to the laboratory for confirmation where the 17 were confirmed to be cases of Lassa Fever.

According to him, 13 persons on admission are responding to treatment, while others have been discharged. He, however, could not ascertain the number of persons discharged.

The commissioner said that 73 persons, who had primary and secondary contacts with the patients, were being monitored.

The 73 persons are currently being monitored. We shall do that for 21 days because the incubation period is from six to 21 days.

After the 21 days, those not affected by the disease will be discharged from the contact tracing list and certified free of Lassa Fever.

He advised people with symptoms such as headache, body pain and general feeling of being unwell, to promptly report for checks, noting that prompt checks were key to reducing the mortality rates associated with the disease.

Deyin regretted that patients usually report the matter when it was too late, and called on health workers to quickly make referrals to higher health facilities, when they cant handle cases presented to them.

He advised people to keep environments clean to ward off rodents, while grain stores should be sealed.
