World Politics / *sen. Rafiu Ibrahim Remains Pdp Kwara South Senatorial Candidate For 2019* by Jgenius: 02:17 am On 1 Jan 2019

Contrary to publication by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Kwara State has clarified that Dr Rafiu Adebayo Ibrahim remains its candidate for the Kwara South senatorial election.

The Kwara PDP State Publicity Secretary, Mr Tunde Ashaolu, who made this clarification in a statement on Friday, said INEC erroneously published the name of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed as the party’s Kwara South senatorial candidate.

The statement said when Governor Ahmed voluntarily withdrew from the senatorial race, the party subsequently nominated Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, and the electoral body was properly notified through the national leadership of the PDP.

“Though INEC set November 17, 2018 as the deadline for candidates for the presidency or National Assembly to withdraw themselves, Section 35 of the Electoral Act however, stipulates that “a candidate who wishes to withdraw his candidature can do so by notice in writing to his political party who in turn notifies the Commission of such withdrawal not later than 45 days to the election. The party shall then be allowed to nominate another candidate.

"Consequently, when Governor Ahmed voluntarily withdraw from the race, the State Chapter of the PDP immediately nominated Senator Rafiu Ibrahim and informed the national leadership of the party about the development.

"In compliance with the provision of the electoral act, the national headquarters of the PDP duly notified INEC of Governor Ahmed's withdrawal and his subsequent replacement with Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, which was within the stipulated time frame.

"We are, therefore, suprised by INEC's erroneous publication of Governor Ahmed's name as our party's Kwara South senatorial candidate as against Senator Rafiu Ibrahim.

"However, we believe that INEC as a responsible and responsive agency will quickly effect the needed correction to avoid contradictions that can create unnecessary tension within the polity.

"All our party members, supporters and the general public should, by this clarification, know that Senator Rafiu Ibrahim remains PDP flagbearer for the Kwara South senatorial election. There is absolutely no cause for alarm."

World Politics / Atiku Abubakar On Presidential Debate by Jgenius: 01:57 am On 1 Jan 2019
We came here for a Presidential debate, not a candidacy debate, and I, Atiku Abubakar can not challenge or question an administration where the man at the helm of the affairs of the nation is not present to defend himself or his policies. After all you cannot shave a man's head in his absence. I do not believe in attacking a man who is NOT here to defend himself. As a leader and former vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, let me first apologise to all Nigerians, my fellow candidates and the moderator for the the APC Presidential Candidates absence in this debate. His non-appearance is a slight on ALL of us and our democracy.

Secondly, with all due respect to my fellow candidates, Fela Durotoye, Oby Ezekwesili, Kingsley Moghalu and to the moderator Mark Sugar and with apologies to all Nigerians here and at home expecting an interesting debate, I regret that I will not be able to go on with this debate due to President Buhari's absence.

I however challenge President Buhari to choose a date and time for a debate where he will be present and I will be there, hopefully with the other candidates as well.

Thank you and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Atiku Abubakar

World Politics / Chief Justice Replies Ccb, My Assets Declaration Expires In 2020 - Hope For Nige by Jgenius: 05:24 pm On 1 Jan 2019

Justice Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria has confirmed that his asset declaration form numbers SCN 00014 and SCN 00005 were declared on the same day, 14/12/2016 and will expire in 2020.

He noted that the 2009 Period which he did not make declarations, were submitted in 2016 when he noted the omission.
According to Hope For Nigeria, Justice Onnoghen added that "following my appointment as acting CJN in November 2016, the need to declare my assets anew made me realize the mistake and filed them.

“I then did the declaration to cover the period in default. I did not include my standard charted bank account in SCN 000014 because I believed they were not opened then.
He argued that “I did not make a fresh declaration of asset after my substantive appointment as CJN because I was under the impression that my SCN 000015 was to cover that period of four years which includes my term as CJN...."

The declaration expires every four years unless you are going for a new position. Justice Onnoghen's asset declaration of 2016 will expire in 2020. Sadly Buhari's has misfired again.

World Politics / Fg’s Lobby Fails As Atiku Arrives America by Jgenius: 05:00 pm On 1 Jan 2019

The intense lobby by the federal government to get the United States to deny the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, visa eventually collapsed Thursday as the main opposition party’s torch bearer landed at Washington Dulles International Airport last night.

He was received by his associates and the Diaspora supporters.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had at the hint of the US granting Atiku visa last year, cautioned the Americans not to contemplate the gesture as it might give the impression that the foreign power is supportive of the opposition party’s candidate.

For the federal government, he said that might mean interference in the internal affairs of Nigeria as the general election was a few months away then.

World Politics / Buhari’s Dementia Is Now A National Emergency by Jgenius: 04:33 pm On 1 Jan 2019

By Prof Farooq Kperogi

On November 23, 2018, I tweeted that a doctor who has met Buhari told me that Buhari shows tell-tale symptoms of dementia (of which Alzheimer's disease is a type), which is characterized by repetitiveness, unawareness, mental deterioration, impaired memory, diminished quality of thought, slurred speech, and finally complete helplessness.

A non-medical person whose dad has dementia and who has met Buhari in the recent past had earlier told me Buhari’s dementia was worse than her dad’s was. She was concerned that Nigeria had no president. She's right. Buhari barely has any awareness of his existence, much less the requirements of being president. For instance, he has signed several documents he would never have signed if he were mentally alert. And it’s only going to get progressively worse.

That’s precisely why he had been hidden from the public for long. The people who are bent on imposing him on Nigeria know he is a human vegetable but don’t want the world to know about this. Nevertheless, with his disastrously cringe-worthy performance at yesterday’s #NgTheCandidates chat and his awkward, pity-inspiring verbal miscues on the campaign trail, the cat is now out of the bag.

Buhari’s problems aren’t mere “senior moment” problems that I wrote about in a widely shared 2015 column. In fact, the doctor who told me Buhari has dementia (and possibly Alzheimer’s) read my 2015 article where I explained away Buhari’s “Michelle of Western Germany” gaffe as age-induced memory lapse, which is informally called senior moments in America. He said it was beyond that. It’s a clear case of progressive, irreversible cognitive decline.

Buhari does not remember the day he was sworn in. He couldn’t tell a "presidential candidate," a "senatorial candidate" and a "gubernatorial candidate" apart. He didn’t remember when he was Petroleum Minister. He slumped at a campaign rally in Kogi and his aides didn’t seem shocked, indicating that this is a fairly habitual occurrence beyond the glare of cameras. That’s evidence of weakened motor skills, which is another symptom of dementia.

If you think with Buhari as president Nigeria has a president, you should sue your brain for non-support; you're NOT thinking! We have a national emergency on our hands. Buhari is clearly infirm both in mind and in body. Without a doubt, other people are ruling on his behalf. If Nigeria were a functional nation, the National Assembly would've declared him incapacitated and removed him from office. And he would certainly not be a candidate for president. He should go and rest, not rule because he is actually ruining, not ruling, Nigeria.

Why My Mission To The US Matters
By Atiku Abubakar

It has become pertinent for me to speak about my ongoing visit to the United States of America, where I met and I am still meeting with US administration officials and business leaders.

I travelled to the United States of America because I had a mission and my mission is to create the right economic atmosphere for American investments to return to Nigeria at a rate and quantum that we had before the current Nigerian administration’s policies almost halted the flow of Foreign Direct Investments to Nigeria.

I am in America because Atiku means jobs.

My reason for running for the office of President of Nigeria and even for going into public service in the first place, is because I believe that Nigeria has what it takes to be the beacon of hope for the Black Race and a leading nation of reckoning in the international community.

This has not materialised over the course of the last four years because, as Chinua Achebe prophetically said in his 1983 book, “the trouble with Nigeria is the failure of leadership.”

The current Nigerian administration has allowed our relationship with our long-standing friends and partners to deteriorate and this has had unfortunate consequences for our economy.

Foreign relations that had been meticulously and delicately built for decades were allowed to deteriorate because the incumbent administration mistook their personal interests as the interest of Nigeria and allowed short term goals to dominate their foreign policies.

New friendships should not be made at the cost of old friendships. It is not an either-or situation. Right from independence, Nigeria has nurtured a policy of non-alignment. We borrowed from the Lincoln policy of malice toward none and charity for all. Sadly, that policy has suffered major setbacks in the last four years.

As a leader in business, I am cognisant of the fact that both Western and Oriental nations will be making the transition from fossil fuels to electric powered vehicles and other green energies over the course of the next two decades. This means that Nigeria’s oil has a limited shelf life.

To be forewarned is to be forearmed and we must, as a nation, begin to make the transition from an oil economy to a modern economy based on manufacturing and value-added agricultural chain.

The message I took to the United States business community is not a new message. In my opinion editorial in the British media (Beyond Brexit - Nigeria wants a new trade deal with Britain), I opined that Brexit is an opportunity for Nigeria and the United Kingdom to have a Big Ambitious Free Trade Agreement.

It is only common sense.

In 2014, the African continent as a whole earned $2.4 billion from coffee grown in Africa and shipped mainly to Europe. That sounds impressive. However, one nation alone, Germany, made $3.8 billion from re-exporting Africa’s coffee in 2014.

As a businessman, I see this and I cannot allow it to continue. It is unconscionable, but situations like these will not stop unless Nigeria and Africa have leadership that thinks business instead of aid and capital instead of loans.

Nigeria has perhaps the highest populations of youths as a segment of the total population, in the world. Already, we have the unfortunate distinction of being the world headquarters for extreme poverty. We cannot afford business as usual. My single-minded focus is to change this dubious record by transforming Nigeria from a consumer nation to a prosumer nation (a nation that consumes what it produces).

For this to happen, we need US firms who have divested from Nigeria, to return. We need Procter and Gamble to reopen their $300 million Nigerian plant which they shut down last year. We need General Electric to reverse their $2.7 billion pull out of Nigeria.

And my vision is for trade to go both ways. Nigeria has a lot to offer America via her creative industry (Nollywood is the world’s third largest movie industry) and rich mining sectors (Nigeria’s Kaduna state is rich with gold ore). I am also eager to find a market in the US for some of the half a million shoes manufactured in Nigeria’s cities of Kano and Aba everyday.

Someone somewhere said Nigeria’s youth are lazy. I am one of the single largest employers of Nigeria’s youth and I know that that assertion is false. My travels in Europe and America is to sell the Nigeria that I know to the world that does not yet know her. A Nigeria with not just a hardworking youthful population, but a nation with some of the smartest working people on earth. A nation that is open for business and a Nigeria that is much more than oil.

And I am certain that if I am successful in selling this Nigeria to the world, the world will come to Nigeria for business. That is why I am in America. Because I believe in JOBS - Jobs, Opportunity, Being United and Security and it is time Nigeria and all Nigerians finally have the opportunity to realize their true potential.

Atiku Abubakar is Presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party and former Vice President of Nigeria.
