Education / Asuu Strike: Nans Reveals What Will Happen If Academic Activities Don’t Resume B by Kinging: 09:56 pm On 1 Jan 2019
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to boycott the 2019 general elections if the Federal Government fails to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The chairman of the Abuja chapter of NANS, Mojeed Omolaja, stated this in Abuja on Wednesday, at a one-day conference organised by Online Publishers Association of Nigeria with the theme: “Free Press and objective reporting in the 2019 election year.”

Omolaja also distanced the FCT chapter of NANS from the faction of NANS led by one Akpan Daniels Bamidele, who was said to be a student of Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

The Bamidele-led NANS had visited President Muhammadu Buhari, where he endorsed his re-election.

Omolaja insisted that the NANS officials who paid courtesy call to the President were not fair, adding that the FCT chapter of NANS stood for integrity.

He said, “We in the FCT here are not part of those who went to eulogise the President; we stand for integrity and anything we get right in FCT will be got right in all the states of the federation because we lead and others follow.

“The Nigerian students will not vote in the forthcoming election if academic activities do not resume in the universities.

“In this forthcoming elections, we the FCT chapter of NANS that controls other chairmen in other states have deemed it fit not to participate in the election until when ASUU calls off the strike, because they can’t be playing with our future.

“Their children are going to school abroad and we are here and they still want their children to come and rule over us with their lackadaisical attitude towards our education.

“It is quite unfortunate that at this point in time students are at home doing nothing.

“The major reason we are at home is that ASUU is on strike and we expect the Federal Government to meet their demands because this incessant issue is a catastrophic setback to the students.

“Imagine somebody spending seven to eight years to finish a four-year programme. It is not done abroad. Is it because our parents don’t have the financial muscle to send us abroad?”

World Politics / Elections Will Be Free, Fair, New Igp Adamu Pledges by Kinging: 03:51 pm On 1 Jan 2019
President Buhari decorating the new Inspector-General of Police, Abubakar Adamu Mohammed, at the State House.

New Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu yesterday allayed the fear of the opposition political parties that the police could be complicit in the rigging of the general elections.

Addressing reporters at State House, Abuja, following his decoration by President Muhammadu Buhari, Adamu promised to ensure the elections are credible.

“We are professionals. We are going to stick by the rules. We are going to do the right thing. We will not go outside the ethics of our job to do things that are untoward. Everybody will be given a level-playing ground to play his or her politics,” he said.

According to him, “Adequate arrangement has been made to make sure that free and fair and credible elections take place in Nigeria. We are going to build up on the strategies put in place, to make sure that we have a hitch-free exercise.”

Adamu replaced Ibrahim Idris whose tenure ended yesterday having crossed the mandatory thresholds of 35 years in service and 60 years of age.

The new police boss, who is from Lafia, Nasarawa State, and holds a BSc in Geography, will serve in acting capacity pending a confirmation. He enlisted into the Force February 1, 1986 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.

Before his appointment as acting Inspector General of Police, he was the head of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos, Plateau State.

He was Commissioner of Police in Ekiti and Enugu States and also Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 5 Police Command Headquarters, Benin, Edo.

Opposition political parties nevertheless have rolled out their expectations, even as they criticised Idris over alleged unprofessionalism.

Leading the group, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) asked Adamu to learn a lesson from “the shameful end of Idris by immediately setting up the process of re-orientating and insulating the Force from partisan politics, while subjecting it to the tenets of democracy and the rule of law.”

It said the new IGP “must urgently take steps to address the bastardisation of promotion in the police under the last IGP where officers due for promotion were denied and only those endorsed by a cabal or who have enough money to buy their way through were promoted. This is in addition to immediately setting up a process that guarantees proper welfare of officers and men of the Nigeria police.”

In a statement by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, yesterday, the PDP urged the officer to “avoid the pitfalls of the last IGP, who has gone down in history as the most corrupt, devious and reckless police officer to hold the post.” It further advised him to remove all templates of election rigging contained in the handover note that would be presented to him by Idris.

According to the party, the outgoing police boss would be remembered as “the only IGP in our political history who surrendered the responsibilities of his exalted office to the whims and caprices of politicians who share courtesies with the Buhari Presidency. He defied the need to secure troubled areas and watched carelessly while an integral part of our nation was engulfed in bloody clashes.”

It said: “Idris will be remembered as that police officer that had a penchant for framing innocent Nigerians with ridiculous allegations. Throughout his inglorious tenure, he functioned as the commander of the militant wing of the APC, just to retain his office and remain in power.”

Also, PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus at a rally in Osogbo, Osun State, yesterday urged Adamu to avoid the errors of Idris who “served the All Progressives Congress (APC) cabal and not the Nigeria Police or the Nigerian people.”

The Coalition of Political Parties (CUPP), on its part, urged Adamu to release all political detainees especially senator dino melaye.

World Politics / New Minimum Wage: Governor Udom States Stand On N30,000 Demand by Kinging: 01:07 pm On 1 Jan 2019
The Akwa Ibom State governor, Udom Emmanuel has assured the state Labour Congress of his readiness to pay of N30,000 as minimum wage in the state, explaining that new minimum wage has never been a problem to him right from the beginning.

The governor who said this on Monday in Uyo during a consultation with the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, United Labour and other affiliate unions stressed that the state government was only waiting for the Federal government to decide on the new minimum wage so that it can implement it in the state.

He said labour is the bedrock of development in any nation and that his administration would do everything possible to ensure that it satisfies the needs of the unions.

Emmanuel said he has kept this promise for a long time, adding that even when allocations from the federal government were still pending, he sourced for money to make sure salaries were paid.

“Labour is the key to development. You cannot relegate labour to the background.

“Minimum wage has never been an issue; it is just that it has been a matter of legislation. We are waiting for directions from the federal government, once the direction is given, we will pay.

“In the face of circumstances and what we face in this country, I have done my best to make sure that workers do not suffer. I pay salaries in circumstances that I do not receive allocation. You did not elect me to make excuses but to find solution to problems.

“I have demonstrated capacity yesterday and can look into the future. I am here today because you people have strengthened me to be here and made it possible for me to be here, and we can talk and negotiate. I thank labour for the fantastic relationship between the labour and us.

“The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has the best blueprint for workers in the country. We need your support in the usual manner to support us in the coming election. Today is the day for consultation. I want to thank God for the leadership of the labour and for this state. It is not in every state that labour sits like this with the governor,” he said.

Earlier, the Nigeria Labour Congress State Chairman, Comrade Etim Ukpong said labour is a very economically and socially variable group, adding that he is happy the governor knows the labour has given him support.

He said the workers were appreciative of what the governor had done, and hoped that he would fulfil all outstanding promises to them.

“Over three and a half years, there had been no labour restiveness in Akwa Ibom State because you are working with people who can manage the situation.

“Your coming gives us the satisfaction that we are working with somebody who understands the meaning of labour union. We welcome you here, you saw how the labour leaders welcomed you.

“They appreciate you and what your government has spent during the period as governor, and as you are leaving this place, you will address what the people want to hear. Our workers want to see the consultation in action” he stated.
