It has been reported that a young woman identified as Charity Amadi has alleged that her blood sister, Chioma, burnt all her credentials out of jealous for her success.
According to a report by Legit, Charity, a 2013 part-time graduate of Economics/Maths from the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED) in Oto-Ijanikin area of Lagos, narrated that she is from a family where nothing comes easily.
She said she had to work with her Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) as a private school in Iba, a suburb of Lagos state, where she earned N12,000 per month and that she enrolled for an evening training programme in tailoring and a weekend course at AOCOED.
Narrating her trials to Legit.ng, Charity said her problem began when her fiancé and his family came for her introduction while her sister, Chioma, who is six years older than her, had no man to call her own.
She said: “We lost our mother early in life, so we were left to the care of our father. After my secondary education, I was employed as a teacher in a private school in LASU-Iba road and I also got enrolled for an apprenticeship in tailoring every evening.
"While this was on with the little I saved from my salary, I sought admission into Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (ACOED) to study Economics/Maths on part-time.
"This was how I struggled and sponsored myself through self-effort until I graduated from the college and my fiancé came to our father for my hand in marriage.
"This angered my sister. She became jealous of my success and harboured animosity against me without me knowing until she launched her evil machination against me.
"One day, I got home to make photocopies of my credential for the job offer I got only to discover that they were all missing where I kept them. "I searched everywhere for it. I asked my father and other siblings, they told me they didn’t know anything about the missing documents.
"Meanwhile, my sister was silent all the while until one of our neighbours came to me saying she saw my sister when she burnt some clothes with some papers wrapped in it.
"What paper could that be? I asked myself. I hurried to my father to tell him about what I heard and when she came back, my father confronted her and she denied having anything to do with it initially.
"Later she confessed to burning my Senior Secondary School Certificate, my Baptism certificate, Birth certificate and AOCOED certificate out of jealousy of me. She confessed that she was envious of my successes.
"I learnt tailoring, I was employed and now wanted to get married while she has none. And that was what made her to burn my credentials. I cried out my eyes. My father appeased me but said I shouldn’t make a case out of it after all we are sisters.
"Now my father is dead. My sister is married now while I am out of job and needed my certificates to secure another job.
"I was left with only the photocopies of all the affected documents and I know employers of labour would demand to see the original copy of all the certificates. I am at a crossroad not knowing where to turn to.”

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that in 2018, there was 9.6 million recorded cancer deaths and 18.1 million new cases. It went further to report that one in eight men and one in 11 women will die from cancer.
A group of Israeli scientists have said that the world should get ready for a major medical solution any moment from now.
According to The Jerusalem Post, these scientists are laying claim to the “complete cure” to cancer which will be cheap and have minimal or no side effects.
“We believe we will offer in a year’s time a complete cure for cancer,” Dan Aridor, chairman of the board of Accelerated Evolution Biotechnologies Ltd. (AEBi) in Israel said.
“Our cancer cure will be effective from day one, will last a duration of a few weeks and will have no or minimal side-effects at a much lower cost than most other treatments on the market. Our solution will be both generic and personal.”
AEBi is a biopharmaceutical company which concerns itself with therapeutic peptides that provide leads to difficult targets.
Aridor notes that the drug is called MuTaTo (multi-target toxin) which they pride is “on the scale of a cancer antibiotic–a disruption technology of the highest order.”
These peptides will be combined with a toxin that will target and kill the cancer cells. Thereafter, a DNA coding will be introduced as an antibody into a bacteriophage– “a virus that infects bacteria. The protein is then displayed on the surface of the phage. Researchers can use these protein-displaying phages to screen for interactions with other proteins, DNA sequences and small molecules.”

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, has said he would concede defeat if he loses the 2019 elections, provided the exercise is adjudged free and fair.

Mr Abubakar appeared on the candidates a televised town hall hosted by journalist Kadaria Ahmed on NTA Wednesday night. Peter Obi, his running mate appeared with him.
Mr Abubakar is the main challenger to President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential elections scheduled for February 16.
The opposition candidate’s response appeared starkly different from the one offered by Mr Buhari when he was asked the same question when he appeared on an earlier instalment of the programme earlier this month.
Ms Ahmed asked Mr Buhari whether he would concede, but rather than say categorically whether or not he would, the president gave a response that was widely deemed non-committal.
Although he made reference to his previous presidential election losses, he insisted those happened because he was cheated, and not because citizens did not vote for him.
Responding to a question on how Atiku hopes to reform judicial system and EFFC, Atiku said: “I will be working out a framework where justice is no longer delayed and justice process shortened. There should be collaboration with the legislative arm to ensure that we achieve a faster justice delivery process”.
Atiku, responding to questions on whether he will grant amnesty to individuals who has been accused or found guilty of looting Nigeria, said: “There should be dialogue on the issue of fighting corruption. Before reviewing our laws, we will dialogue with individuals found guilty. I will grant amnesty, so they can bring the money from abroad and invest them here. You can’t achieve victory over corruption if you don’t allow some individual amnesty.”

Nigerian pastor based in South Africa, Timothy Omotoso is standing trial for charges including rape. But a group of Christians has decided to judge him according to the Bible.
Members of Christians of South Africa said they will visit Omotoso in prison to allow him to explain.
The group’s president, Derick Masoana, said: “Our national executive committee will then make a judgment whether or not Omotoso is guilty. We are not undermining the court of law but we are obligated by scripture to uphold Christianity.”
Masoane said none of the evidence presented in the trial suggested Omotoso was a rapist.
He said it appeared Omotoso had consensual s*x with his alleged victims.
The Nigerian pastor and two women have been accused of s*xual assault, rape, human trafficking and racketeering.
Pastor Timothy Omotoso (59), Zukiswa Sitho (28) and Lusanda Solani (36), have been in custody since the beginning of trial last year.

Morolake Carter who shared her experience, blamed her mom who forced her to undergo v*rg*nity test when she was only 16 years old.

A beggar who was caught raping a woman in the middle of the street after she stopped to help him has claimed that he did it because she wanted it.
James Campbell, 31, who lived with his mother in Paisley, Renfrewshire, admitted the attack which took place in Glasgow on August 16 last year.
He was begging in Glasgow when his victim stopped to check on him and try to help. The 57-year-old woman had noticed he was not wearing a top although it was cold and raining. She asked him if he was alright and chatted to him for about 10 minutes. Campbell then followed her and refused to go away.
As the woman walked past a lane, Campbell, who earned between £40 to £100 a day from begging, demanded a kiss before restraining and raping her.
The attack happened at about 6:30pm on August 16, 2018 in a lane between West Nile Street, and Nelson Mandela Place.
Prosecutor Angela Gray said: "He told the woman. 'I love you. I want you to be my girlfriend.' and she replied: 'Don't be daft. I don't even know you."
The court heard that the woman struggled with Campbell and repeatedly told him: "Please don't" and "There is no need for this."
Miss Gray added: "She repeatedly told him to stop and that he was hurting her.
"He did not stop and told her to shut up.
"A solicitor working in an office overlooking the lane saw the incident taking place and phoned the police."
Officers arrived to find Campbell raping the woman and dragged him off her.
The s*x attack was captured on CCTV and was described by Miss Gray as "graphic". The rapist had fresh scratch marks on his outer thighs inflicted on him by the woman and the woman was visibly shaken and upset following the s*xual assault.
After he was arrested, Campbell reportedly told police: "She wanted rough s*x so I gave it to her."
Campbell, who has been in custody since August, last year, was placed on the s*x offenders' register.
Sentence was deferred on Campbell until March 1 to obtain background reports.

Armed bandits on Monday attacked a community in Zamfara State, kidnapping over a dozen people, a Premium Times report has shown.
The victims include a new bride, and some nursing mothers.
The incident happened at Zurmi Local Government Area at about 11:45 p.m.
Residents said the heavily armed bandits shot sporadically into the air, scaring residents.
Falalu Ashafa, a teacher at Government Girls Secondary School, Zurmi, said his wife, mother, two children and nanny are among those kidnapped in the Monday attack.
He said after the attack, 26 persons, including three lactating mothers, and a newly-weded bride were missing and believed to have been kidnapped.
The Zurmi attack is coming two days after Premium Times reported a similar attack on a viewing centre at Birnin Magaji. In that attack, seven people were kidnapped and are yet to be released as at Tuesday morning.
The security agencies in Zamfara are yet to make any official statement on the Saturday attack.
Killings and kidnapping for ransom have continued in Zamfara communities, despite security reinforcement and subsequent change of the police commissioner in the state.
When contacted, the Zamfara police spokesperson, Mohammed Shehu, said the police repelled the Monday night attack but later realised that 13 people had been kidnapped.
He said the hoodlums stormed Majema area in Zurmi with a view to causing mayhem and breakdown of law and order in the community.
“On the spur of the moment, combined teams of Police/Military and Civilian JTF Stationed in Zurmi responded promptly and repelled the attack.
“As a result, the attackers were forced to beat a retreat back to Dumburum forest. Sadly enough, 13 Persons were later discovered to have been kidnapped by the attackers.
“The command in its efforts to ensure the successful rescue of the Kidnapped Victims dispatched a Search and Rescue Operation team to Complement the effort of the Joint Security Personnel Currently on extensive bush combing.
“The press will be duly briefed on the outcome of the rescue operation.
“The command appeals for continued support and cooperation with the police and other security agencies by giving timely and useful information on activities of criminal elements in the state.”

What’s the most memorable trip you’ve been on recently?
I have been to a lot of places but I had a horrific experience in Kingston, southwest London, not too long ago.
What happened there?
I did a bungee jump where they tied me to a strong metal and I jumped. It was a very scary experience for me. It was just like sky diving. It was very daring but I enjoyed the experience. At some point, I thought I was going to fall. It was mind-blowing. I must say that being in Kingston was so much fun and they had lots of food as well.
Why did you choose Kingston?
I went there on vacation but I travelled alone. My cousins live there; so, I knew I was going to enjoy myself.
Did you notice anything peculiar about the place?
I noticed that there are not so many black people over there. There was a time I was scared because most places I visited were full of only white people. However, it is an exciting place and the serenity is divine. Also, I noticed that there were a lot of elite there.
What places did you visit while you were there?
It is a residential area; they don’t really have tourist sites. You cannot compare it with Greece which has lots of tourist attractions. That is why I am planning to go there (Greece) for another vacation.
Which of their meals excited your taste buds?
Mostly, they served English continental dishes. I also noticed that they ate a lot of meat, vegetables, pastas and cheese. I think their meals are very nice.
What can you say about their fashion sense?
It is in the United Kingdom, so, they dress well. Their men and women are conservatively dressed, unlike the Americans.
How was the weather like when you travelled?
It was snowed when I visited; everywhere was very cold. There were days I regretted travelling because I could not move around and visit places as a result of the weather.
How were you able to pay for the things you bought?
I had my dollar card and any time I bought anything, I paid with it. I also withdrew money from automated teller machines.
Do you think Kingston is expensive compared to other countries you have been too?
There are things that are cheaper there and some that are expensive. Some clothes there are sold cheaper than in other places I have visited but their shoes are quite expensive.
Since the area is dominated by white people, did you experience any form of racism?
Kingston is populated by white people so I was careful because I didn’t want to be exposed to racism. However, they are quite receptive people. They are welcoming and nice. But I experienced racism when I was connecting from John F. Kennedy Airport, New York, to London. We had to stop at the airport for checks. I was the only black person on the queue. So, some policemen and other law enforcement officers asked me to leave with them. This made me so scared because I thought someone had planted an illegal substance in my bag.They asked for my passport and took me to a special room where I was detained for some minutes. They asked me questions about where I was going and some other irrelevant things. I wasn’t even allowed to be on the same queue with the other white people. To me, that was racism at its peak.
What other country do you have in mind to visit?
I am planning to go to Santorini, Greece, where most of the buildings are painted white and the water is sky blue. The place is romantic; so, it is advised that you visit with your partner. Also, I will like to visit Seychelles and Zanzibar.
What would you tell someone who wants to visit Kingston for the first time?
Travel and have fun but remember you are going to another country; so, you have to be careful. Try and get as much safety tips as possible so you won’t run into trouble.

Elder statesman and former Common Wealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has asked the Federal Government to reconsider its stance on the call for restructuring and return to true federalism.
According to him, the country is under-performing and lacking national cohesion like never before, a situation he believes can only be resolved by restructuring its present governance architecture.
He said, “Judged by all the relevant indices, Nigeria today is clearly underperforming and lacking national cohesion as never before.
“If our country is to succeed on the road to political stability and realisation of its rich development potential, it must, by restructuring its present governance architecture.
“It must return to the true federalism that it practiced in the years before the military intervened in our national politics”.
With the general elections just days away, Chief Anyaoku who was speaking at a symposium to unveil the new logo of The Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, also called on the Independent National Electoral Commision (INEC) to ensure a credible exercise.
According to him, the international community is watching to see how far the nation’s Constitution is respected.
He said, “As our country is preparing for the general elections in two weeks time, I have three observations to address the Nigerian government, INEC and others.
“First, Nigeria’s friends and the whole of the international community are watching… watching the behaviour of Federal Government and its agencies, including especially the police, the army and the other law-enforcement instruments, to see how far we respect the country’s Constitution, our Nigerian government, like all other governments over the world, while of course guiding its sovereignty should pay heed to the views of the international community otherwise, the country will return to the pariah status which it happily exited in 1999 when it once more embraced democracy.
“My second observation is that INEC had earned deserved compliments for its commendable handling of the last gubernatorial elections in Ondo and Anambra States.
“But it must be admitted that it attracted criticisms for its conducting subsequent similar elections in both Ekiti and Osun.
“I urge INEC to remain aware of the fact that the credibility of the results of our forthcoming elections will depend on the level of impartiality and transparency it demonstrates in ensuring all aspects of the elections are free and fair, thereby making the results to truly represent the will of the people”.

The draw for the fifth round of this season’s FA Cup was conducted on Monday night.
Chelsea will take on Manchester United, in what is a repeat of last year’s final.
The game which will be played at Stamford Bridge, is the only all-Premier League match.
There will be no replays in the fifth round, as all eight ties will be played to a finish on the day of the game.

The Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja has unanimously struck out the case of the Peoples Democratic Party Governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Olusola Eleka against Dr Kayode Fayemi, Punch Metro reports.
The tribunal has thus upheld Dr Kayode Fayemi of the APC as a duly elected governor of the state.

A Kuwaiti court on Monday sentenced an opposition politician to seven years in jail for failing to tell his wife he divorced her and continuing to have s*xual relations with her, her lawyer said.
Waleed al-Tabtabai, an Islamist who is currently outside Kuwait, already faces a 42-month jail term handed down in July in another case for storming parliament and assaulting police.
The appeals court on Monday upheld a 2018 verdict finding him guilty of adultery, said the lawyer, Naser al-Otaibi, adding the ruling was not political.
“My client received justice after she was taken advantage of and tricked into something that criminalises her under sharia (Islamic) law,” he told AFP.
The lawyer said his client had found out her husband divorced her in 2017 — a year later — after she sued him for failing to provide for her and their child.
“Evidence was brought forward that they continued a marital relationship during the time they were divorced, including an exchange of intimate pictures via WhatsApp,” he said.
Tabtabai is currently outside of Kuwait amid government discussions on whether or not to unseat him from parliament.

It was on that day that the news broke of the petition filed by the civil rights group against the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN),Justice Walter Onnoghen, at the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) alleging that he owns ” sundry accounts primarily funded through cash deposits made by himself up to as recently as 10th August 2016, which appear to have been run in a manner inconsistent with financial transparency and the code of conduct for public officials.”

It said Onnoghen did not declare the accounts as required by law.

That petition is now threatening to consume Onnoghen, who was sent on suspension yesterday by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The ARDI petition, dated January 7, 2019, was received two days later by the CCB, according to online publication, TheCable, which broke the news.

Things moved in quick succession with the Federal Government filing a six-count charge against him for alleged failure to declare some of his assets, including about $3million.

The $3million is said to be lodged in five accounts.

The domiciliary and Naira accounts in the Standard Chartered Bank are coded as USD account No. 870001062650; Euro account No. 93001062686; Pound Sterling A/CNo. 285001062679; e-Saver Savings (Naira) account No. 5001062693; and a Naira A/C No. 010001062667.

The charge sheet is dated January 10 and was filed on January 11.

A CCB investigator, Mr. James Akpala, said in an affidavit in support of the charges against Onnoghen, that the filing of the case stemmed from a petition against the CJN.

Akpala was silent on the name of the petitioners.

He merely said: “I know as a fact that the Head Office of the Bureau received a petition alleging that the CJN failed to declare his assets according to the law.”

ARDI describes itself as “a whistleblower and an Anti-Corruption Awareness disseminator, whose effort is to strengthen our democracy and ensure transparent, accountable and responsive governance devoid of corruption for our society.”

The civil society group said its petition was necessitated by “the imminence of the 2019 General Elections and the overwhelming roles of the Judicial Arm both before and after.”

It claimed that Onnoghen owns “sundry accounts primarily funded through cash deposits made by himself up to as recently as 10th August 2016, which appear to have been run in a manner inconsistent with financial transparency and the code of conduct for public officials.”

It alleged that Onnoghen made five cash deposits of $10,000 each on March 8, 2011 into Standard Chartered Bank Account 1062650; two separate cash deposits of $5000 each and four deposits of $10,000 each on June 7, 2011.

Five similar cash deposits of $10,000 followed on June 27, 2011, and another four deposits of $10,000 each the following day.

Onnoghen, according to the petition, failed to declare his assets immediately after taking office, contrary to section 15 (1) of Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act; and that he did not comply with the constitutional requirement for public servants to declare their assets every four years during their career.

It added that the CJN appeared “to have suppressed or otherwise concealed the existence of these multiple domiciliary accounts owned by him, as well as the substantial cash balances in them.”

It said the CJN’s financial transactions appeared suspicious and not justifiable by his lawful remuneration at all material times.

Detectives investigating the finances of the suspended CJN last weekend turned their attention to his salary account.

Sources said they may have unearthed evidence that the salary account laid untouched in the bank for 18 months at a stretch.

An imperious Novak Djokovic won a record magnificent seventh Australian Open title by routing Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 Sunday with a display of flawless tennis.

The Serbian world number one dominated the Spanish second seed to win his 15th Grand Slam title in just 2hr 4min on Rod Laver Arena.

It put Djokovic, 31, out on his own ahead of Roger Federer and Roy Emerson, who both won six Australian Open men’s singles titles.

Djokovic dropped to his knees and kissed the ground after vanquishing his greatest rival.

“I’m just trying to contemplate on the journey in the last 12 months,” said an emotional Djokovic, pausing for breath to compose himself and not become tearful.

“I had the surgery exactly 12 months ago,” he added, referring to an elbow operation that saw him slump out of the world’s top 20 before bouncing back to win Wimbledon and the US Open.

“To be standing nowhere in front of you today and managing to win this title and three out of four Slams, this is amazing. I am speechless.”



The pair’s only previous final in Australia, in 2012, developed into a record-breaking 5hr 53min slugfest — the longest in Grand Slam history.

A repeat of that epic never materialised with Nadal uncharacteristically nervous at the start and Djokovic taking an immediate advantage that he would never relinquish.

– ‘Fighting spirit’ –
“Even if tonight was not my best day, of course, I had someone that played a lot better than me tonight,” said Nadal.

“I have been going through tough moments in the last year. I was not able to play until the first round here. Even if tonight was not my night it’s so important for me to be where I am coming back from injury.”

Djokovic noted that the duo had both endured injury-ravaged 2018 campaigns.

“Obviously a tough match tonight, but … you came back from an injury that took you out from the tour since September last year,” Djokovic said of Nadal.

“You’re showing to me and to all your other colleagues and many young tennis players around the world what is definition of the fighting spirit and resilience.”

The Spaniard had not had his service broken since the third set of his first round match but that streak ended in a flash as the Serb came sprinting out of the blocks.

– Total control –
Djokovic was in total control on his own delivery and won his first four service games without conceding a single point, even inducing Nadal to miss a forehand completely on the way to grabbing the set in 36 minutes.

The second set followed a similar pattern, with Djokovic racing through games on his own serve, while Nadal struggled to hold.

The pressure told in the fifth game and Djokovic broke again when Nadal hit a lob volley long after an exchange at the net.

The on-song Serb was so fired up he broke Nadal again to go to 5-2 before serving out for a two-set lead with three aces in a row with just 1hr 16min on the clock.

The statistics were as telling as the scoreline: Djokovic had served eight aces to Nadal’s one and made just four unforced errors while the Spaniard had coughed up 20.

When Djokovic broke again in the third game of the third set it was just a matter of how quickly he would finish off Nadal.

The end was swift, as Djokovic withstood one break point at 3-2 before administering the last rites in a flurry of winners off both wings.

Victory extended his win-loss record against Nadal to 28-25 and squared the Grand Slam final count between the pair at 4-4.

Saudi Arabia on Sunday executed four Yemenis found guilty of murdering a security guard, the kingdom’s interior ministry said.
The four men robbed and killed a Pakistani man who worked as a security guard at a company, said a ministry statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.
The execution took place in Mecca, the statement added.
Twenty people have been executed in the kingdom since the beginning of the year, according to the authorities.
The ultra-conservative kingdom has one of the world’s highest rates of execution, with suspects convicted of terrorism, homicide, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking facing the death penalty.
In 2018, Saudi Arabia carried out the death sentences of 120 people.

American R&B star Chris Brown is being questioned by police in Paris after being accused of rape, sources close to the inquiry told AFP on Tuesday.

A woman has accused Brown, along with his bodyguard and a friend, of raping her in the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Paris on Tuesday night last week, a source close to the case said on condition of anonymity.

He is also being questioned over a suspected drugs offence, the source said.

French celebrity magazine Closer broke the news earlier Tuesday, saying the 24-year-old woman had met the star in a nightclub near the Champs-Elysees before agreeing to go back to his hotel suite.

Le Figaro newspaper had reported earlier that Brown, who has a history of violence, was in the French capital attending shows during men’s fashion week.

Brown was convicted in 2009 of beating fellow singer Rihanna, who was then his girlfriend and was forced to miss the Grammy Awards because of her injuries.

In 2016, he was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon following a standoff with Los Angeles police, after a woman said he threatened her at his home.

He also pleaded guilty to assaulting a fan in Washington in 2014 and was accused of violence by a woman in Las Vegas.

Brown was discovered by record label scouts when he was a boy working at his father’s gas station in the US state of v*rg*nia.

First identified as a rapper, he then found success with his rich singing voice, but he has been in the news more often in recent years for his legal troubles.

The TraderMoni scheme of the Federal Government has generated a significant amount of buzz and national conversation: from those who laud its impact, and those who view it as politically motivated. TraderMoni is one of 3 microcredit products of the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP). In an exclusive interview with BusinessDay, a man behind the wheels, and Chief Operating Officer of GEEP, Uzoma Nwagba explains how GEEP was a direct response to the challenge of access to funds for micro-enterprises and financial inclusion.

This article captures some salient points from the interview.




What is the GEEP initiative really about?

GEEP is a microcredit programme that provides much-needed capital to traders, artisans, farmers, petty traders. It is one of the social intervention programmes of the Federal Government and comprises three products: MarketMoni, FarmerMoni, and TraderMoni. GEEP was initiated in 2016 by the Federal Government; with an understanding that there are over 30 million Nigerians at the base of the pyramid in active commercial activity but never have an opportunity to access credit. In 2017, only 0.04% of bank loans went to this micro-segment.



These beneficiaries are hardworking Nigerians and specifically, they are not “interesting” to the traditional lenders: they have little to no financial track record, they have no collateral, some barely have formal identities. However, they are actively trading and in dire need of capital. They are sellers of the food stuff you cook, the beverages you drink, the airtime you use, and kiosk items you buy. And there are tens of millions of them, across the 36 states and the FCT. GEEP is an opportunity to properly identify and capture these Nigerians, provide them with capital, and in the process onboard them into the formal financial system of bank accounts and mobile wallets – in a way that they can be sustainable recipients of credit.

It is important to note that these loans go from N10,000 to N300,000. You start at N10,000 if you are a petty trader – and you quickly graduate to N300,000 by simply repaying your loans.

Besides the fact that this population not only needs small amount for a start, they also do not have the traditional bells and whistles – BVNs, KYCs, bank accounts, collaterals – which are the requirements of traditional lending. So a product specifically had to be made for them, driven by agents on the field, equipped with tablet computers, and disbursed through mobile wallets which only require the trader to have a mobile phone. This can be truly transformative to this sector, and to the lending ecosystem. In the past 2 years, a total of 1.5 million loans across the three programs have been disbursed, 1.2 million of which are TraderMoni beneficiaries. The loans are driven strictly by the scale of demand.

Is Tradermoni a vote-buying scheme of the Federal Government?

The first GEEP program started in 2016, so this is the third year of operation. The first loan registration was in May 2016. Since then, the GEEP program has been running nonstop across the country. It is the direct field learnings while implementing MarketMoni that led to the introduction of the TraderMoni which started as a mobile-based loan product and kicked off in September 2017. The point is that GEEP program did not start in election season. Very far from it.



As at November 2017, even before the country cared who was running for office or not, the Bank of Industry had disbursed over 300,000 loans. Moreover, for those who still push the vote-buying narrative, it is important to always ask: is GEEP (either MarketMoni, FarmerMoni, or TraderMoni) a wrong programme? In other words, is it impacting millions of Nigerians or not? If it is, then why would there be a wrong time to do the right thing? If a pepper seller sees credit she needs, shouldn’t she access it while it is available? Think about this even more deeply, the vote-buying narrative could even be another patronizing expression of our middle-class privilege and we must always check this.

As a middle-class entrepreneur, or business mogul, you can walk into BOI today to borrow funds to grow your business. You walk out with your dignity intact, and possibly with a loan. Sometimes these loans run into tens of millions of Naira, and billions of Naira. Yet, nobody accuses you of being vote-bought, even when you are borrowing the money of a government institution or project. On what basis therefore do we assume that those at the bottom of the pyramid are also not intelligent economic actors who can make rational decisions to better their lives? These are human beings with goals, aspirations, and dignity like you.

They are not genetically predisposed to bad decisions, or so vulnerable that they would just be bought. Nothing could be further from the truth. If they have a better life, our job is done.

As a matter of fact, it is noteworthy that some of the states with the largest beneficiaries are not even states that politically align with the party in power. As long as you are a Nigerian petty trader, you are eligible!

So the big question is: Are people getting impacted by the programme or not?



The answer is yes.

It is impressive to see the results so far. Over half of these 1.5 million beneficiaries are first-time operators of bank accounts or mobile wallets. Seeing them use these tools even after receiving their loans is a testament to the power of financial inclusion for our economy. The Bank of Industry is committed to targeting everybody who is not financially included. It is going to be a long journey to bring the over 30 million Nigerians and micro-enterprises that are financially excluded or under-included, but the steps are being taken and Tradermoni is playing a central role.

Former Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel’s jersey number at Middlesbrough has been revealed.

Mikel on Tuesday underwent a medical at Middlesbrough after agreeing personal terms with the English Championship side on Monday.

According to The Nation, the 31-year-old has been handed the number 12 shirt at Middlesbrough and will be unveiled on Wednesday.

Mikel spent the past two years at Tianjin TEDA in the Chinese Super League.

The Super Eagles captain will be part of a Tony Pulis side looking to bring Premier League football back to the Riverside next season.

Middlesbrough currently sit fifth in the Championship table and seven points off leaders Leeds.

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Madrid on Tuesday for a court date in which he could be fined 18.8 million euros ($21.4 million) for tax fraud in a deal reached with the Spanish taxman.

As part of an agreement arranged in June with the former Real Madrid hero’s lawyers, prosecutors are also asking that the Portuguese attacker, who last summer left the Spanish capital for Italian champions Juventus, be handed a 23-month jail sentence.

However, Ronaldo would not spend a day in prison as sentences of up to two years are generally not enforced in Spain for first-time offenders in non-violent crimes.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner did not speak to the crowd of reporters waiting behind blue police barriers for him to arrive at the court in northeastern Madrid for the hearing, which is expected to last just a few minutes as the deal is officially presented to the judge.

Dressed in black and wearing dark sunglasses, a smiling Ronaldo climbed up the courthouse steps holding hands with his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez.

The judge will give the final sentence on Tuesday or the coming days, according to a court spokesman.

Ronaldo’s lawyers had asked that he be allowed to enter the building by car to avoid the media spotlight.

But the court president refused the request, saying that despite his “great fame”, he wouldn’t “compromise security” at the building, according to a court document.

Ronaldo’s request to appear via videoconference was also denied.

Offshore Companies

Madrid prosecutors opened a probe into Ronaldo in June 2017 and he was questioned in July that same year.

“I have never hidden anything, nor have I had the intention of evading taxes,” he told the court then, according to a statement from the sports agency which represents him, Gestifute.

Prosecutors accuse him of having used companies in low-tax foreign jurisdictions — notably the British v*rg*n Islands and Ireland — to avoid having to pay the tax due in Spain on his image rights between 2011 and 2014.

His lawyers said there had been a difference in interpretation of what was and was not taxable in Spain.

The deal between Spain’s taxman and his lawyers has allowed Ronaldo to avoid having to sit through a long trial that could have damaged his image and seen him handed a heftier sentence.

Ronaldo is not the only footballer to have fallen foul of Spain’s tax authorities.

His former Real Madrid team-mate Xabi Alonso will appear at the same Madrid court on Tuesday on a separate tax evasion charge.

Public prosecutors are demanding that Alonso be handed a five-year jail sentence and pay a fine of four million euros.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, once Ronaldo’s big La Liga rival, paid a two-million-euro fine in 2016 in his own tax wrangle and received a 21-month jail term.

The prison sentence was later reduced to a further fine of 252,000 euros, equivalent to 400 euros per day of the original term.

Accused of rape in US

But Ronaldo’s legal wrangles won’t be over soon after a probe was opened in October in the United States where a former American model accused him of raping her in Las Vegas in 2009.

Police in the US city recently asked Italian authorities for a DNA sample from the footballer.

Ronaldo has always strenuously denied the accusations.

In a New Year’s Eve interview with Portuguese sports daily Record, he said he had a “calm conscience” and was “confident that everything will very soon be clarified”.

Why bolt???

At a time when viral reports keep emerging about ritualists stealing women' panties for ritual purposes, Nigerian women have become very secretive with their underwear. In fact, most women don't dry their panties in the open anymore for fear they would be stolen and used for rituals.
However, a young lady has shocked people with her actions recently. The unnamed woman actually put up her panties for sale in a video which has gone quite viral online.
In the video, the girl is seen displaying her panties and speaking to the camera, explaining that she needs money for her house rent and so wants to sell off her panties to whoever wants to buy. She goes on to state that she has different kinds of panties to sell.
The video has divided social media users since it emerged. While some attacked the young woman for her actions, others feel she is just playing around for some attention.

Last Wednesday, a young lady, the daughter of a cleric, in a particular church in Ondo State spread her underwear on a line at the back of her room and went to sleep. In the morning when she went to check for the underwear, she was confronted with an empty space where her underwear had been. The two security men within the vicarage had left by then but they were summoned and confronted with queries over the missing panties. Though investigations are ongoing, it has not been proved that the two security men were culpable.
But that incident was a clear indication of the new round of oddities the nation is witnessing. Cases of missing underwear are now very rife, forcing young women and ladies to be wary of spreading their underwear in the open.
Other cases abound in which the culprits had been caught red-handed with several underwear. Stories have also circulated about how young men attacked ladies and dispossessed them of their underwear. One of such stories went viral last weekend. It was said that some boys invaded an eatery in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, and forced the ladies present to remove their underwear. Those who did not wear underwear, according to the story, were given new panties by the attackers to wear for about five minutes. The boys, the report, went further, later disappeared from the scene.
Though Sunday Tribune could not confirm the veracity of the story, some people swore it actually happened. Similar stories had since been circulated by words of mouth or on the social media, but none, according to Sunday Tribune investigations, except those caught in the act, had been verified, creating a possible scenario that mischievous people might simply be escalating fake news to cause unease in the society.
So serious are the cases of missing ladies’ underwear that it has become prayer points in some churches. Video clips where some churches turning the incident into an important point for prayers have also become hits on social media more for their hilarity than the seriousness of the issue.
Sunday Tribune gathered that the fear of becoming victims have forced some women to forgo panties altogether. A news report did the rounds recently that ladies in a tertiary institution in Delta State no longer wore undies for fear of being attacked. The report of women who no longer wear undies might sound unbelievable, but it underscores the seriousness which people now attach to such happenings since the general belief is that the stolen underwear are being used for juju to make money.
For quite a while, it was as if the attackers were invincible. However, that now seems a thing of the past. Recently in Ibadan, a man in his late 40s or early 50s was caught with almost a dozen underwear. He was said to have been picking them off clotheslines until someone spotted him and raised the alarm. Unfortunately, before the suspect could bolt away, he was apprehended by an angry mob.
The suspect was stripped of his green T-Shirt while a lady among the mob kept asking him where he stole the pants from, where he was taking them and what he wanted to do with them. Despite being severely beaten, the suspect did not utter a word.
Another lady, as she flipped several pants from inside a nylon bag that the man had on him, stuffed a pair of white pants in his mouth and instructed him to chew it. When he refused to do so, a young man hit him at the back of his head with a stick. Taking a cue from the action, others began to pelt the suspect with stones and other objects until he started bleeding, and was left with swollen lips and eyes.
If the man referred to above faced jungle justice at the hands of a mob, one Chinenya Okorie is currently facing charges at a Magistrates’ court in Onitsha, for stealing an underwear (valued at about N250) of a 19-year-old lady, Ofodili Mary. It was the first of such cases in which an accused person is facing charges according to the laws of the land.
Similarly, police in Awka, arrested a 19-year-old who stole an underwear at about 6.48 am on January 11. Police said the suspect had planned to sell it for N80,000 while still on the trail of his accomplices.
What they do with female underwear…
Sunday Tribune spoke with some spiritual leaders to find out if there were indeed any spiritual reasons for the current upsurge in the stealing of ladies’ underwear, each of which investigations revealed could be worth between N200,000 and N250,000.
Evangelist J Dewumi of Jehovah Mission Church of God (Itedo Alasepe), Molete, Ibadan and a traditionalist, Chief Yemi Elebuibon, both agreed that anyone doing anything to hurt another “is spiritually wicked.”
Evangelist Dewumi said: “It is the end times as warned by the Bible; so, strange acts shouldn’t surprise us. It doesn’t surprise me. Worse things will still happen. Anyhow, the problem with most people, especially our youths, is that they are in a hurry to make money. They don’t want to wait for God’s time. Anything outside of God never pays off at the end.
“The private parts of a woman are sacred and expected to be hidden. A woman’s beauty ends in what’s between her thighs. That is what her pants protect. Same for their pants; it’s supposed to be hidden.
“Those who steal ladies’ pants intend to use it for sinister things. Truly some people use their pants for money rituals; so do wicked people use it for longevity and also to spiritually steal people’s wellbeing. The victim’s may suddenly cease, which means she won’t be able to get pregnant again.
“The outcome is not immediately noticeable, but women may not be able to be able to get pregnant. When you see women beginning to lose weight and tests can’t reveal any physical ailment, then it must be a spiritual attack. However, people doing this don’t know they don’t have the final say. If God intervenes, their folly will be exposed. It is not found in the Bible, Quran and even among traditionalists that human beings should engage in anything to fast track success before God’s time.”
Chief Elebuibon in his own reaction advised women to always keep their pants safe even in their own homes, no matter the situation.
“It shouldn’t be on clothesline outside the house because a woman’s private is her itele idi (closest part to her) and should be kept private. From time, it is the wicked ones who steal women’s pants, clothes, sputum, etc., to spiritually harm others. I don’t know how they use pants to make money, but wicked people can do anything.
“In those days when we didn’t have menstrual pads, our women cut from old clothes and use when they were observing their monthly period and nobody saw it. It was a private thing. Our women, even if they gave their clothes to drycleaners, they never gave their pants and bras to launderers. We can only warn our women to be careful,” he also said.
Sunday Tribune, also during the week, got a piece of information that a female student of Delta State University, Abraka who claimed to be a victim but did not want her identity revealed said she was held at gun point by some people who asked her to remove her pants. It was not clear whether the attackers succeeded in taking away her undies or not.
“Yes, guys are now using guns to rob female (sic) of their pants. It’s now your pant or your life,’ the information forwarded to Sunday Tribune stated.
Another lady, Akinpelu Boluwatife, said she is now more careful about where she puts her underwear as news of disappearing undies is now common. She also told Sunday Tribune that she has already joined the bandwagon of ladies who no longer wear pants as a result of the situation.
“The fear of these ritualists has made us to stop wearing pants, to be on a safer side. After performing rituals on the pants, as we hear, the ladies may start bleeding or vomiting blood. Since the news got to my friends and I, we have stopped putting on pants and we have also stopped staying out late at night,” she said.
A lady, Jumoke Timilehin, while speaking with Sunday Tribune on the issues said: “Stealing people’s pants does not really mean that the juju will work for those who stole them. There have been cases where the stolen used pants and the ritual back-fired on the person. Aside that it is against the will of God.

Leader of the Inri Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Ayodele Elijah Babatunde, has handed out a 21-day ultimatum to the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Peter Obi to do three things within 21 days for them to win the presidential poll. This is coming barely hours after he spoke to our correspondent also concerning the 2019 polls.
He said if his words were neglected, President Muhammadu Buhari would simply coast home to a resounding victory.
“They must fortify their party with Senate President, Bukola Saraki, becoming a major factor in the process; they must work on other techniques germane in winning; they must seriously go spiritual.
“The All Progressives Congress is very, very spiritual and needs a superior match to upstage (it),” he said.
“Atiku and Obi have bright chances but they have between Friday 21 and January 3, to determine if they will win or not, otherwise Buhari will return.
“They must fortify the party, work assiduously on other technicalities to win.”
Primate Ayodele however warned: “If Buhari wins a second time, he may not have the energy to handle governance as his health will still affect his performance. The president needs a lot of prayers for his health (to improve).”
Speaking further on the gubernatorial polls he said: “APC is very spiritual, the PDP should note this and work on it.
“APC will take Kaduna, Kano, Gombe, Jigawa, and Nasarawa, but they won’t take Niger and Adamawa. The poll in Oyo will be between ADC and PDP.
“Governor Amosun should not underestimate Dapo Abiodun as he will shake the state. Dapo Abiodun should also beware of Amosun’s candidate. Akpabio is so desirous to win Akwa Ibom for the presidency. PDP should note this and work more.
“Governor Wike will not have it easy winning a second time. He should note this. Two governors will betray Atiku in his ambition. Emmanuel Udom must also strategise if he wants to win. If APC is not very careful, they will lose Zamfara polls.
“Jigawa, Gombe Adamawa, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers will be war zones in the coming elections. Governor Akeredolu should be prayerful so that he won’t face daunting challenges. He must work so well on the court case. Not all the governors will complete their tenure.”
While advising the Presidency on insecurity, he said: “The president must tackle the challenge of armed bandits very well; he should not overlook it. The IGP will go this year. INEC will be taken to court over election results.
“If APC wins, Buhari will be the party’s last president. There will be serious crisis between Oshiomole and Buhari’s loyalists. Oshiomole will have problems after the presidential polls.
“In 2023, the presidency won’t go to the South West; it shall be between the North and South East but the South East must be smarter than everybody.
“Let us pray against storm and thunder disasters.”
He gave further predictions, saying:
“Let us pray against the death of a sitting president in the world, and plane crashes that will involve eminent personalities. There will be turbulence in the aviation sector but a Nigerian plane will escape a crash.
“There will still be more job losses this year especially among some new-generation banks. Political parties will clash seriously; they will stone one another and even kill.
“Kidnapping and other vices will be rampant.
“There will be ethnic clashes in the South-South. “There will be indictment against Atiku and also Buhari.
“Let us pray against accidents during the campaign across the nation.
“APC must work very hard in Edo less PDP will upstage the party. PDP will win in Kwara. Governor El Rufai will have it very hard getting a second term,”

My Mum often said the world is corrupt, and the only way we could be protected frm its evil fruits was to ‘keep away from the world’. So I grew up to enjoying staying inside the car whenever we attend a relation’s wedding or naming ceremony as a family. I was to eat my food there
I also grew up to fast most days when it was not comfortable. Mum often said fast renews one’s strength, and it gets one closer to God. And for that, I fasted most times, because I wanted to get closer to God—wanted to ask Him why he hated me so much to create me here.
So I was living in a cage, so to say. No freedom at all!! Tunde came into my life to change that. He was one of those men that supplied my mum her chicken feeds. Whenever they came, I was d one who attended to them. I was to make sure they supplied all that was ordered.
It was through this that we got talking and he often teased me about my beauty. And when I smiled, he would say I should keep doing it, cuz he loved it. I was not the one to feel comfortable when a guy was talking to me. I was brought up to feel ashamed—to feel unease, restive!!
But Tunde made me feel comfortable with him. He would force me to lift my head up sometimes, and also said I should look him straight in the eyes. When I managed to, he would say, “you are indeed beautiful. Just smile. Smile, Ola.” And I would. He would then call me ‘queen’.
When my closeness with Tunde was getting intimate, I started developing feelings for him. I just wanted to be with him all the time. He wasn’t anything close to Bro. John (my extra lesson tutor) in terms of beauty. But I loved him more than him.
Whenever they came to our place like that, he would send his colleagues away and create time for me. When I teased him that he would get fired at his work, he told me his Uncle owned the shop. Little by little we started kissing and hugging more prominently. He was good at it.

I couldn’t afford that, so I told him I would find a way. You all know how it ended. I killed the ONLY chicken left in our cage, fried it, and gave it all to him.
The following week, he summoned me over. I took along a flask of spaghetti. No chicken, nor anything inside, this time. When I got to his place, he looked me from head to toe and told me I am becoming ‘fat’. I told him I had always looked that way and he got angry.
“Are you saying, I’m a liar!” I said I didn’t said that and wasn’t suggesting that. He slapped me and said I was raising my voice at him. When I knelt to beg him, he pushed me away and said a statement I would never forget, “Carry your cooler and leave my house. You too soft”
And that was it. He pushed me out. That was the last time I saw him. I was really damaged all through that month, and my mother made it worse. I have forgiven both of them now because I am a better woman for it. I learnt from it, and wear the lesson everyday. Now I’m free.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Abuja has granted bail to Nigerian lawmaker Senator Dino Melaye, who was being held in a police health facility in Abuja.
Dino Melaye’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), was granted a bail application by Justice Yusuf Halilu on health grounds.
Justice Halilu was of the view the Senator must be healthy to stand trial.
He said since the Senator cannot be arraigned on the stretcher or on his hospital bed, he should be allowed on bail to attend to his health.
The judge asked him to produce three sureties, one of who must be the clerk of the National Assembly, who must undertake to produce him when he is to be arraigned in respect of a charge already filed against him.
The judge said the other two sureties must be owners of properties within the Abuja metropolis.
Melaye was arrested by the Police after a siege on his home in Maitama, Abuja on Friday, January 4. The Senator locked away in his apartment, surrendered on the eighth day of the siege.
He slumped while he was being taken into custody and was taken to the police infirmary in Garki.
The People’s Democratic Party lawmaker was arrested for alleged criminal conspiracy and attempted culpable homicide.
Melaye is currently standing trial in more than one suit. He has been accused of illegal possession of arms, gun running and sponsoring hoodlums in Kogi State.
Police spokesman Jimoh Moshood said the shooting and injuries on a police officer by Senator Dino Melaye and his armed thugs in Kogi State on the 19th July 2018 warranted his arrest.
He added that the police officer was yet to recover from the gunshot injury he sustained during the attack and was under intensive medical care.
“The Police Officer, Sgt. National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole has said that sins of politicians are forgiven once they decamp to the party.
Channels TV quotes Oshiomole as saying this while welcoming new members to the party, at the APC presidential campaign in Benin city today January 17th.
