In the forest a pregnant deer went near a flowing
river in search of a good place to give birth, it
finds the area safe. Suddenly labor pain begin!
At the same moment the dark cloud fall and
the lighting strike cause fire in the forest,
when the dear turn left it saw a hunter creeping
with an arrow pointed towards it, when it turns
right the deer saw a hungry lion coming towards
it, in front of the deer there where the flowing
river was. What will this deer that is in pain do?
Will she survive?
Will she give birth to the fawn(young deers)?
Will the fawns survive?
Will the fire consume them?
Will she died from the hunter's arrow?
Or will the hungry lion tear her to pieces?
The fire, the hunter, the lion and the river all
surrounded her, what will she do?
The deer has nothing to do so it focuses on
giving birth to a new life.
This is what happens as the deer give birth to the
fawn
_The lightning strike and put darkness in the eyes
of the hunter.
_he releases the arrow and it miss the deer and
hit the hungry lion dead.
_it starts to rain heavenly and the forest fire
went off totally
And the deer give birth to a healthy fawn
In life, there are times we are confronted with so
many difficulties that confuses our mind and
give us negative thoughts and impossibilities,
some of the thoughts are so powerful that it
overcome and overwhelm us. Maybe we can learn
from the pregnant dear
The only thing that was on the mind of the
deer at that time was to give birth to a baby. The
rest wasn't in her hands, so any action or
reaction that would have changed her focus that
moment would have resulted in death or disaster.
In the midst of the storm, keep focus on your
creator always, he will never ever forsake or let
you down, NEVER
Remember, your creator never make mistake(s),
neither does he sleeps.
A strong person always keep their focus, even
with tears running down their eyes, they
always say I am OK with a smile . Be of good
courage, today's failure never determine your
destiny .Its never too late for God to attend to
your situation!

We will all get there no matter the distance..
I Went to First Bank e-bank hall few hours ago.
As I was about entering the hall, a lady ran ahead
of me and pushed me away, so she could quickly
join the long queue before I will get to the queue.
I did not say anything. She thought I will queue
up behind her, but I was actually not there to
withdraw, I came to deposit. So I walked to the
deposit machine and I was the only one there. No
single person on the queue. When I finished
depositing, I was about leaving the hall, when the
lady came from the queue and apologized to me
for pushing me away the other time. With sorry
smile on her face; she said
'I am sorry for pushing you away, I thought you
were coming to the queue'
I just smiled and told her not to bother, that it is
not a big deal.
But since then, the lesson in this story kept
coming to my mind, and I felt I should share it for
us all to learn from it.
Friend, who are you 'pushing' away and trying to
outrun in the race of destiny, relationship,
business, ministry, career, etc? You are thinking
you are going to the same 'queue' (destination)
unknown to you that, though your path may look
alike, your destinations are different!
How many people have had to say 'sorry' to
those they pushed aside, pushed away, pushed
down when they finally realized that the person
was not actually going to the 'withdrawal
machine' they were running to.
Are you reading this and you are pushing people
away here and there by slandering them,
hindering their progress, blocking their promotion,
spoiling their good names through lies and rumor
all in a bid to 'get there' before them. I challenge
you today, to take it easy. You might not be
going to the same destination. It might surprise
you later that, with all the pushing away you are
doing, they may still leave you on the 'queue' of
destiny later and they will be successful before
you.
Finally, are you reading this and you can feel
people in your school, office, ministry, business,
etc pushing you away so that they can get ahead
of you? Don't worry, God will use your case to
prove to them that, 'it is not of him who runs,
but of the Lord that shows mercy...'
(Romans 9:16). He will show you mercy and give
you an overtaking speed and those who are
pushing you here and there will later come and
tell you they are sorry.
Please, don't push anybody. You might meet on
the same path, but you might not be going to the
same 'machine' (destination).

Education / Plagiarism Row At Futminna by Truevine: 09:52 pm On 1 Jan 2019
hatsAppEmail
The Federal University of Technology, Minna
(FUTMINNA) in Niger State, has expelled a
doctoral student Olateju Ademola Mukaila, for
alleged plagiarism.
Three lecturers accused of complicity in the case
were sanctioned. The decision did not go down
well with the Academic Staff Union (ASUU),
JUSTINA ASISHANA Minna reports.
The expulsion of a doctoral student of the Federal
University of Technology, Minna, (FUTMINNA),
Niger State is generating controversy in the
university.
Olateju Adedamola Mukaila, a PhD student in the
Department of Urban and Regional Planning was
expelled after being accused of ‘plagiarism’.
However, he was not punished alone. Three other
lecturers linked to the matter served one
punishment or the other.
For instance, Mukaila’s supervisor (internal) Prof
Oluwole Olukanmi Morenikeji, was not only
demoted, but was relieved of his position as
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics).
Another lecturer, Dr Olatunde Adedayo, the
university’s Turn-It-In officer (‘Turn It In’ is a
software that detects the degree of plagiarism in
a scholarly work), was also suspended, a decision
which the lecturer claimed was unjust and
unconstitutional as the issue was never reported
to his office. Adedayo was initially demoted, but
following his complaints, he was suspended. The
third lecturer (who does not wish to be named),
whose work Mukaila was said to have plagiarised,
was dismissed. He declined to comment on the
matter, saying: “I have nothing to say,” when The
Nation reached out to him.
However, Adedayo appealed the Council’s
decision to demote him, wondering why he had to
be punished when he was the one who informed
the university about the plagiarism. He claimed
he was never in the picture until Mukaila’s project
was brought to his notice.
“I was even the one who informed the relevant
authorities on the allegation and I do not know
the basis or reason why I am also affected,” he
said.
Adedayo said he was invited by management as
a witness. In his appeal to Council, the lecturer
claimed he was neither accused of any crime nor
was he asked to defend himself at any point.
“The appeal panel interacted with me via
telephone because I was on national assignment
then,” said the lecturer.
The teacher said he was to get the biggest
shocker of his life when, after his appeal, the
investigative panel constituted by the Council, not
only refused to clear him, but changed the
allegation and punishment against him. He had to
make another appeal to prove his innocence.
Mukaila, however, is not going down without a
fight. He has challenged the conviction by the
university in the court of law.
The lecturer at Kano State Polytechnic is
demanding N1 million as compensation from
FUTMinna management.
The case, filed before the Minna High Court, is
questioning the reason behind his dismissal after
he had fulfilled all the requirements for
graduation.
When contacted for comments on Mukaila’s
dismissal, the school management said it would
not speak further to avoid contempt of court.
However, regarding Adedayo, a source in the
university claimed that his suspension may not
be unconnected with the fact that he went on
national assignment without due permission while
being investigated.
Further investigation by The Nation revealed that
two other lecturers who travelled with Adedayo
for the same assignment did not get their
approval before the trip, but they were granted
leave during the trip. Not so for Adedayo, who
was not given approval.
Adedayo, who spoke to our correspondent, said
he had since appealed the decision to suspend
him and copied relevant authorities, but was yet
to get a response.
He also described himself as an upright person,
who always speaks up against injustice and has
been a great contributor to the positive status the
institution enjoys.
The plagiarism case is raising a lot of dust in the
university. The Nation learnt that this is the first
case of plagiarism that has led to serious
backlash on the institution. Many workers were
not happy with what they described as the
university’s shoddy manner of handling the
matter.
On its part, the Academic Staff Union of University
(ASUU) FUTMinna chapter, has accused the
management of putting the union in the dark,
saying it was not aware until punishment was
served on its members.
Its chairman, Dr Ndamitso Mohammed, said
ASUU was not invited to be part of the committee
set up to investigate the case.
He said: “I started hearing about the issue as if it
was not an issue at all. Some people were just
hearing things like, ‘this lecturer did this, this
student did that.’
“No one knew the truth about the issue. If they
(management) had informed us, we would have
taken action and it would not have gotten this far
because in the union, an injury to one is an injury
to all.”
Muhammed also bemoaned the affected members
for failing to reach out to the union during their
trial.
He continued: “Also as ASUU, we cannot just
jump into a case. If there is such a problem, the
members affected are expected to write to us
that they have been victimised, but where such
members did not do that, the union’s hands are
tied.
“We are not aware that our members were invited
to face any disciplinary committee. All we were
hearing then was hearsay because there was no
official complaint.”
Muhammed said it was after the management’s
verdict, that the lecturers ran to the union.
“When no other members wrote, we decided to
take it upon ourselves by wading into the matter.
We set up a committee at the executive level and
interacted with the affected members to hear their
view,” he said.
Muhammed said the report of the committee was
submitted to the National ASUU, which directed
them to set up another committee because the
previous committee had no member of the
management in it.
“We have not been able to set up the committee
as directed because of the ongoing ASUU strike,
but once the strike is called off, we will set up the
committee and see what can be done,” he said.
The union chairman said the allegations against
his members were not as serious to have
warranted the kind of big stick the management
wielded.
“We are still finding it difficult to find out what
went wrong. It is a sensitive case which many do
not want to dabble into.”
Many workers approached by The Nation for
comments were afraid to speak on the issue.
The few who spoke agreed on condition of
anonymity. A lecturer in the Department of
Architecture berated the management for taking
the case too far.
“The anti-plagiarism tool is not a punitive, but a
corrective measure. It aimed for originality. Even
if someone is to be punished, it should be the
student and not the lecturers,” the lecturer said.
According to the lecturer, Turn-It-In was adopted
by FUTMINNA in 2010, but it took effect two
years later. The tool, he said, is to highlight the
intensity of work lifted from another work by the
student and show the percentage of the
plagiarised work. If more than a certain
percentage, the student will have to rework to
meet what is acceptable.
“Different levels of studies have its own tolerance
percentage. Here, for undergraduate, it is 20 per
cent or less, for Masters and PGD, it is 15 per
cent or less and for PHD, it is 10 per cent or less.
This student got less than 10 per cent when he
did his final Turn-It-In, so you can also judge if
the case is worth punishing anybody for,” he said.
Another lecturer in the Department of
Biochemistry said he was surprised when he
heard about the case. “Even the Turn-It-In is
usually done after the external seminar and not
before it. So, I do not see any case in this at all.
This is just a clear case of politics in our
institution,” he said.
Another source said. It is agreed that a lot of
people plagarise the work of others, but they do it
in a way that it fits into what they are
researching, and not by writing it verbatim. The
institution blamed the lecturer for not stopping
the external examination, but I can tell you that
the issue of plagiarism is usually not dealt with
before the external examination, but after it.
“Plagiarism is not a punitive measure. I believe
there are many people acting behind the scene.
There is no case regarding this issue. The
punishment given to the lecturers and supervisors
did not equate the offence committed. The law of
the university is weak and the student exploited
the law. The university should have used this as
a lesson towards other cases and not taking it to
this extent.”
Another lecturer thought it was odd the way the
case progressed saying: “The peculiar thing about
this case was that they punished the staff before
they punished the student and contrary to the
code of service, none of the lecturers punished
were issued query. They were only called as
witnesses and the next thing they had was the
punishment.”
However, one lecturer blamed the supervisors for
not stopping the external examination when they
realised the work was plagiarised.
“There are a lot of things they could have done
that they did not do. Maybe that is why the
institution punished them. I know the student
Turn It In after the externals, but when it is clear
that it is a highly plagarised work, they should
have raised hiatus and they would have been
vindicated.”
Repeated text messages and phone calls were
made to the management of the institution to
comment, but no response was got.
Several text messages sent to the Vice-
Chancellor (VC), Prof Abdullahi Bala, were nor
replied. At a point, the Head of Information Unit of
the Institution Mrs Lydia Legbo, promised to fix
an appointment between The Nation and the VC,
but it never materialised.
Following three weeks of intense pressure, Mrs
Legbo told The Nation that the VC said he would
not speak on the issue because of the court case.
“Speaking about the case is unethical and to that
effect, the VC said he will not comment on the
issue,” Mrs Legbo told The Nation in a text
message.
Mukaila filed the case against FUT Minna and
eight other defendants, claiming he did not
commit the offence under which he was being
expelled. He is therefore, praying the court to
declare the expulsion null and void.
Last Thursday, the case was mentioned at the
Federal High Court Minna. However, the university
lawyer did not show up, and the presiding judge,
Justice Ali Aliyu, adjourned the matter to Monday
February 4.
The case filed by Mukaila read inter alia: “A
declaration that the decision to expel and the
expulsion of the plaintiff from the university is
fraught with manifest irregularities and an abuse
of academic powers by the Senate of the first
defendant.”
“The plaintiff is seeking an order of the court to
set aside his expulsion, an order of the court
directing the defendants to absorb the plaintiff for
the purpose of completing his PhD degree and the
sum of N1 million for general damages for the
emotional and mental torture and injury inflicted
to the feeling, dignity and pride of the plaintiff.
The plaintiff claimed that, “like any other student
of the first defendant, both at undergraduate and
post graduate levels are allowed to use other
person’s materials and must be within the
university tolerable limit of 10 per cent.
“The first defendant set maximum tolerance limit
for similarity index also called ‘Turn-It -In’. PhD
degree students are allowed 10 per cent.

Business/Investments / Clearing Agents, Dock Workers, Others Mull Protest by Truevine: 09:47 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Freight forwarders operating in Lilypond Container
Terminal, Ijora, are planning to protest the lack of
business activities in the nation’s foremost dry
port.
The agents, at a joint meeting held under the
aegies of Association of Nigerian Licensed
Customs Agents (ANLCA), National Association of
Government Approved Freight Forwarders
(NAGAFF), dock workers, under the aegis of
Maritime Workers Union, National Council of
Managing Directors of Customs Licensed Agents,
Lilyoond Chapter, regretted that the
concessionaire of the terminal, APMT, had been
postponing resumption of activities.
At the meeting, members decried the attitude of
APMT to their plight, accusing the operator of
insincerity.
“On more than two occasions, APMT has failed to
meet up with their promise of resuming
operations here. We are sick and tired of this, so
the only option is to stage a peaceful protest
against them,” the members said.
However, there was a sharp division as to when
the protest should hold. While some favoured end
of this month, others craved for the action to be
after the general elections. It was however
unanimously agreed that whatever action would
be taken on this would not be before February 1

Business/Investments / Cbn Plans New Capital Control Rules by Truevine: 09:45 pm On 1 Jan 2019
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will be
introducing new capital controls in the second
quarter of the year to protect the foreign reserves
and the naira, The Nation has learnt.
Capital control allows the apex bank to put up
measures that check inflow and exit of funds from
foreign portfolio investors in the economy.
Nigeria suffered severe dollar shortages after the
price of crude oil, its top export and main source
of forex, plunged in late 2014, prompting it to
introduce capital controls in 2015.
The country has multiple exchange rates against
the dollar and has been selling the greenback on
the interbank market to boost liquidity after
floating the naira for investors.
But the policy, if implemented, will increase
pressure on lenders already weighed down by bad
loans.
The requirements will be stricter in terms of what
funding qualifies as capital and will also require
lenders to create “capital conservation” and
“counter-cyclical” buffers, the CBN told
Bloomberg.
The rule seeks to protect the nation’s banks
“against shocks emanating locally and from
abroad” by increasing the level of regulatory
capital and the quality of the assets, it said.
Recently, the apex bank renewed its commitment
to simplify foreign exchange regulations through
reforms and innovation in a bid to further
encourage investors.
It pointed out that the delegation of the issuance
of Certificates of Capital Importation (CCIs) to
commercial and merchant banks some years ago
was done to instill confidence in the investor
community and encourage the flow of foreign
direct and portfolio investments into the Nigerian
economy.
The bank noted: “We assure all investors that the
integrity of the CCI regime remains sacrosanct
and there shall be no retroactive application of
foreign exchange rules and regulations. The CBN
welcomes all legitimate investors to take
advantage of the enormous investment
opportunities in Nigeria.”
The CBN said it will continue to welcome foreign
investments and investors.
“Indeed, some of our recent innovations and
reforms of the foreign exchange regime, such as
the introduction of the Nigerian Autonomous
Foreign Exchange (NAFEX) window, are designed
to simplify foreign exchange regulations,” the
bank said.
With over $60 billion turnover in the Investors’
and Exporters’ (I&E) Forex Window launched by
the CBN in April, 2017, has surpassed
stakeholders’ expectation. The window is not only
a boost to forex liquidity, but has stabilised the
local currency at the official and parallel markets.

Business/Investments / Lcci: Minimum Wage, Election May Heighten Inflation by Truevine: 09:42 pm On 1 Jan 2019
The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(LCCI), yesterday warned that an upward review
of minimum wage and election spending may
heighten inflationary trends in the country.
It said inflation will remain on the upward
trajectory over the coming months unless the
Federal Government formulates and implements
policies that will enhance non-oil sectors’s
productivity to increase output and moderate
inflation.
Addressing reporters in Lagos yesterday, its
President, Mr Babatunde Ruwase said the grosss
domestic product (GDP) growth of 1.81 per cent
is below the nation’s annual population growth of
about three per cent and remains a cause for
concern due to its wider implications for welfare,
unemployment and poverty in the country.
He said the group has not identitied with or
endorsed any political party, and will never do so.
As elections draw near, Ruwase said the economy
and investors are faced with new challenges that
will require some immediare adjustments.
He warned that current weak economic
fundamentals are bad omen and urged the
Federal Government to formulate and implement
policies and programmes that will facilitate the
growth of domestic and foreign investment to
boost the economy.
The LCCI chief also said growing unemployment
figure was a reflection that growth in the
economy is still weak, fragile and not inclusive.
“It is imperative therefore to sustain efforts to
create the enabling environment to attract more
private capital to boost investment and growth,”
he said.
Access to and cost of funds remain a big issue for
many domestic investors, he added.
“With commercial bank lending rate at between
20-35 per cent, the private sector especially the
SMEs had challenges in accessing credit for their
businesses. We note the efforts of government
through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and
Bank of Industry (BoI) to extend intervention
funds to the private sector operators. We also
commend the government for enacting the
Secured Transaction in Movable Assets Act, 2017
(popularly called Collateral Registry Act 2017)
and the Credit Reporting Act, 2017,” Ruwase said.
He urged the government and its agencies to do
more in making sure that credit is accessible to
the private sector especially the SMEs.

Business/Investments / Tcn, Aedc Trade Blame Over Load Allocation, Rejection by Truevine: 09:40 pm On 1 Jan 2019
The Transmission Company of Nigeria ( TCN )
and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company
(AEDC) on Friday traded blames over why power
supply to the DisCos and customers was low.
TCN’s Managing Director Usman Gur Mohammed
said there was no network constraint in the
Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) that
would have amounted to load reduction.
The TCN boss spoke at the official commissioning
of 2*60 power transformers in Suleja
Transmission Substation, Niger State.
According to him, the constraint was simply that
of the AEDC equipment.
He promised to take the reporters on a tour on
the transmission substations around within the
territory of the AEDC.
He said: “The constraint that Abuja has is within
their equipment not within the network.
“And there is no place in Abuja where we have
the network. Let me tell you, some of the things
we did in Kano, Kaduna, if you are interested we
can take you.
“In Kaduna they created this problem and said we
have problem with network, I instructed our
regional manager and said take them to the sub-
station and show what was the capacity and
what distribution were taking.
“So, we will do the same thing for you to enter
our sub-station in Abuja so that you can see for
yourself what is the capacity there and what has
Abuja DisCo taken.”
But AEDC Head of Corporate Communications
Oyebode Fadipe told our correspondent on phone
although the AEDC had its challenges, it was
unfair for the MD of TCN to blame all the
constraints in the sector on it since there were
also challenges of transmission network.
He said: “It will be unfair to say that it is our
company (AEDC) that made our customers not to
have power in the homes.
“We have our challenges and TCN has its own
constraints too, it is unfair for him to keep saying
that the DisCos are the weakest link in the value
chain. TCN should face its challenges and let us
face our own.”
The Nation, however, learnt from a source who
did not want her name mentioned that “in this
week, the breaker in Gwagwalada was bad. The
line in Kukwaba, Kubwa tripped off.”
The sources wondered whether those faults were
those of AEDC equipment.
The commissioned transformers, according to
TCN, were from the $100million loan intervention
that the Federal Government received from the
International Development Association.
The contract was awarded to Messrs MBH Power
limited in June 2016 with a completion date of
June 2018.
The transformers that have load capacity of
48mw to 162mw will increase the substation’s
capacity from 66mw to 162mw .

World Politics / Obaseki Promises World-class Nafest by Truevine: 09:34 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has
assured of the state’s readiness to host a world-
class National Festival for Arts and Culture
(NAFEST) later in the year, to raise the profile of
the cultural expo.
Obaseki gave the assurance when he received a
delegation of management of the National Council
for Arts and Culture (NCAC), led by its Director
General, Otunba Segun Runsewe, in Government
House, Benin City, the state capital.
According to the governor, Edo State has huge
cultural assets to showcase to the world at the
festival, and noted that the agitation for the
repatriation of the over 6000 artefacts looted
during the Benin Expedition of 1897 was ongoing.
He commended the Runsewe-led NCAC for
repackaging the National Festival for Arts and
Culture, with new offerings that were on display
last year in Port Harcourt and charged the council
to explore the huge potential in the state’s eco-
tourism sector.
He tasked the council to lead the way in the
development of a world-class tourism master plan
that would drive tourist traffic to sites and
destinations across the country.
Obaseki told his guests that his administration
was committed to developing the culture and
tourism sector in the state, with ongoing work on
implementable plans to reposition the sector to
maximise its potential.
In his response, the NCAC DG said the essence of
his team’s visit was to convey a proposal of
innovative components billed to be introduced in
the 2019 edition of NAFEST as well as the
timeline for the various cultural events.
Runsewe congratulated the Obaseki-led
administration for winning the hosting right of the
festival, and promised that the event would
provide the state the opportunity to reinforce her
place on the world’s culture map.
He explained that one of the additions to the
festival is the Royalty Day, when all the states’
delegates will pay homage to the Oba of Benin,
Ewuare II.
He lauded Obaseki’s introduction of culture club
in schools as well as the culture information desk
at the Benin Airport, which he said would help
sell the state’s culture and tourist sites to
visitors.

World Politics / Suspension Of Onnoghen Act Of Dictatorship Taken Too Far, Says Atiku by Truevine: 09:30 pm On 1 Jan 2019
The presidential candidate of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has
described the purported suspension of the Chief
Justice of Nigeria Justice Walter Onnoghen is an
act of dictatorship taken too far.
In a statement on Friday by his media office,
Atiku said rejected the suspension of Onnoghen,
describing it as an anti-democratic act.
President Muhammadu Buhari had, on Friday
sworn in Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as
replacement for Onnoghen.
But Atiku called on Justice Onnoghen and the
judiciary to resist the suspension with every legal
and constitutional means that they can muster.
The statement said: “This brazen dictatorial act
is the latest action in the ongoing rape of our
nation’s hard-earned democracy by those who
dined with anti-democratic forces.
“It’s symptomatic of the increasing desperation
that President Buhari and the cabal pulling the
strings have, as February 16, 2019 draws near.
“The fact that the unlawful suspension of Chief
Justice Walter Onnoghen was announced just as
it became public knowledge that the CJN was
constituting the election petition tribunals, is not
lost on discerning Nigerians and the international
community.
“This act of desperation is geared towards
affecting the outcome of the 2019 Presidential
elections. Indeed, it is not just the CJN that has
been “suspended”, it is the Nigerian Constitution
that has been infracted and, in effect, suspended
under the guise of the suspension of the CJN”.
Atiku noted that the case involving the legality or
otherwise of the charges preferred against Justice
Onnoghen is still pending in court, as it should be.
“So far, the judiciary has ruled in Justice
Onnoghen’s favour. So, why not allow the court
to adjudicate on the matter? What is the pressing
urgency? Atiku queried.
The opposition presidential candidate called on
the judiciary to unite against dictatorship.
“Do not let the Muhammadu Buhari
administration divide you. Do not let this
government turn you against yourselves.
“The judiciary is the last hope of the common
man and the defender of our democracy.
“I also urge the international community to follow
the commendable example of the United States
and the United Kingdom by intervening to make
those involved in this undemocratic act know that
their actions will have strong consequences.”

Crime / Offa Robbery: 21 Ak 47 Rifles Stolen From Armoury – Witness by Truevine: 09:25 pm On 1 Jan 2019
One of the prosecution witnesses in the ongoing
Offa robbery case, Insp Hitila Hassan, said on
Friday that no fewer than 21 AK 47 rifles were
stolen from the armoury of a police station in the
community.
The witness, who was being led by the
prosecutor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, spoke at the
resumed hearing of the case at an Ilorin High
Court.
No fewer than 33 people, including nine
policemen, were killed in the bloody robbery on
April 5, 2018.
The witness identified the five accused persons
undergoing trial as accomplices of the late main
suspect, Micheal Adikwu.
They are Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye,
Adeola Abraham, Salaudeen Azeez and Niyi
Ogundiran.
He also told the court that the Closed Circuit
Television (CCTV) footages of the robbed banks
disclosed the identity of the accused, culminating
in their arrest.
Hassan, an officer attached to the Inspector
General of Police Intelligence Response Team
(IRT), said other members of the gang were still
at large.
IRT was set up by the former IGP Ibrahim Idris
and is headed by an Assistant Commissioner of
Police, Abba Kyari.
He said his team was in Ilorin on the directive of
the then IGP to fish out the perpetrators of the
dastardly act.
Hassan said his team worked with officers of the
Criminal Investigation Department on its
assignment.
“ We visited the armoury at Offa Police Station
where we discovered that no fewer than 21 AK 47
rifles were carted away by the armed robbers.
“We also gathered from the accused persons that
the late Michael Adikwu after the attacks on the
banks headed for the police station and started
shouting that he had come on a revenge mission
over his dismissal from the force.
“Then he started shooting sporadically in every
direction at the station.
“Having carefully watched the footages of the
CCTV, we identified the faces in the camera and
then circulated them in the social media for
Nigerians to assist us in the arrest of the culprits.
“Through that we generated our intelligence that
led to the arrest of one Ibikunle Ogunleye in Oro,
Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.
“Initially, he denied having anything to do with
the incident but when confronted with CCTV
evidence, he confessed and said he was one of
the persons inside the banks wielding AK47 rifles.
“His arrest assisted us in the arrest of four other
accused persons standing trial,’’ he said.
Earlier, Insp Yusuf Dauda, an exhibit keeper at the
headquarters of the Nigeria Police in Ilorin, also
testified.
He said on April 10, 2018, a former Divisional
Police Officer in Offa Local Government, CSP
Danjuma Adamu, handed to him some weapons
and ammunition allegedly used in the robbery
operation.
Dauda said that the ammunition included 39
expended 7.6mm ammunition, four expended
5.6mm, two expended blank cartridges, four used
bullets, one live 5.6mm ammunition, one cartridge
safety box on which Ikoyi South West, Lagos,
Nigeria, was written and a damaged padlock.
He also said that on April 15, 2018, Hassan
attached to the IGP response team, also brought
one Lexus Jeep on which a sticker bearing,
“Saraki, ” was written with its key, a Kompressor
Mercedes Benz and four stickers bearing “Saraki ”
The prosecution tendered all the items as exhibits
in the case.
Justice Halimat Salman adjourned the case till
Feb. 19 and Feb. 20 for continuation of hearing.

World Politics / No Shortcut To Wealth, Success – Lai Mohammed by Truevine: 05:12 pm On 1 Jan 2019
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed has admonished Nigerian youths to
be focussed and assiduous and shun any kind of
shortcut to wealth and success.
The Minister gave the admonition on Friday in
Ogbomosho, Oyo state at a funeral service of
Late Dr Abidoye Ayoola, a foremost Nigerian
Engineer in Oil and Gas.
Reacting to question on spate of “get rich quick
syndrome, cultism and ritual” among Nigerian
youths, the minister told newsmen that “every
enduring success must be painstaking”.
He said the youths must take a cue from Ayoola
who attained the peak of his career on account of
“hard work, tenacity, unusual professionalism and
high integrity”.
The minister noted that Nigeria is full of
opportunities which are open to those who can be
painstaking and assiduous in what they do
“There is no short cut to wealth and success,
every enduring success must be painstaking and
comes with it’s own obstacles.
“As long as you remained focussed and
assiduous, you will reach the peak and make your
own contributions to the development of Nigeria,”
he said.
Born on Nov. 27, 1947 to a royal house in
Ogbomosho, the deceased obtained a Degree in
Mechanical Engineering in 1970 from University of
Lagos and a Master in Petroleum Engineering in
1975 from the University of Southwester
Lousiana, USA.
After graduating, he was engaged by the then Gulf
Oil Company, now Chevron where he worked as
Petroleum Engineer.
He later moved to another US-based company,
Solar Turbines International where on account of
hard work, was appointed Manager in charge of
business in the West Africa District.
In 1980, he established his own company and
thus became Chairman/Chief Executive of Negris
Limited, a foremost engineering services company
involved in the design, procurement, installation,
commissioning and maintenance of gas turbines
and related company

World Politics / Nwobodo Dumps Apc For Pdp by Truevine: 05:09 pm On 1 Jan 2019
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC)
Senator Jim Nwobodo has returned to the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) less than 24
hours after Ohaneze Ndigbo endorsed the
presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku
Abubakar.
The former governor of old Anambra state
announced his return to the PDP when some
members of the Ohanaeze led by former chairman
of Police Service Commission, Chief S. N. Okeke
visited him in his Amechi Awkunanaw country
home.
In the entourage were the secretary to the Abia
State government Prof. Eme Okoro; former
Foreign Affairs minister, Chief Dubem Onyia;
Senator Ben Obi; former Minister for Health Prof.
A. B. C. Nwosu; Oseloka Obaze and late Dr.
Ekwueme’s daughter, Mrs. Ada Onyemelukwe.
They all appealed to Nwobodo to come back “to
the house which he built.”
Nwobodo, replying, saying: “I am back to PDP.”
According to him: “At this stage of my life, I see
myself more as an elder statesman than a
partisan politician and I speak from this
standpoint.
“I have served our country both at the state and
the federal level. In the course of my political
journey from second republic till date, I have had
my fair share of ups and downs.
“I made mistakes and learned from my mistakes, I
have learned a lot from my experiences and feel
qualified to speak on burning issues confronting
us as a nation.
“I cannot pretend that all is well in our country
today with the escalating crisis, ranging from the
economy, insecurity, tension among the three
arms of government – executive, legislative and
judiciary.
“Dangerous divisions along tribal and religious
lines, and different militant groups arising from
the hues and cries ofmarginalisation.
“What we are seeing are symptoms of deep
rooted issues that should be brought to the table
for discussions on how to address them.
“I am a democrat and a strong believer in
democracy. Those of us who claim to be
democrats have a duty to tell the president the
truth and advise him appropriately.
“I have been chief executive of a big state and I
appreciate how difficult it could be for the chief
executive of a state or a country to know the true
situation of things with the people you govern.”
He went on: “Just a few of the many
undemocratic moves and sayings that are
capable of igniting crisis.
“As a member of APC and a democrat, I got
visibly worried when I heard party members
boasting we have won the election and just
waiting for results to be announced.
“My question was how? How? How was the
election won when the elections are yet to take
place?
“One of the tenets of democracy is the division of
power among the different independent arms of
government.
“The desecration of any of these arms of
government portends danger to democracy.
“The ongoing attempt to arraign and prosecute
the chief justice of the federation in disregard to
due process is a mockery of the judiciary, which
is the last hope of the common man.
“It is even more worrisome to read in the papers
that President was not aware of such moves.
“Now that the President is aware, he should
please intervene and stop the desecration of
judiciary and restore respect for the rule of law.
We are all aware of the implications of disrespect
for the rule of law and its dangerous
consequences.
“No genuine investor will take us serious and our
image as country will be seriously bruised .”

World Politics / Gana Rejects Appeal Court Affirmation Of Duke by Truevine: 05:06 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana,
has rejected Thursday’s Appeal Court judgement,
which affirmed former governor of Cross River
State Donald Duke as presidential candidate of
the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
This came as national chairman of the party,
Chief Olu Falae, called on all aggrieved members
of the party to bury their differences and support
Duke’s presidential ambition.
Gana, addressing the media, on Friday in Abuja,
through his campaign organisation, said having
carefully weighed the views and options presented
by SDP’s stakeholders and supporters, it was his
considered opinion the judgement was erroneous,
contradictory and a miscarriage of justice
Director General, G19 Presidential Campaign
Team of Prof. Gana,Dr Ike Neliaku, said: “Arising
from the above and many other lacunas and
contradiction in the judgement, we have carefully
weighed the views and options presented by our
stakeholders and supporters across the world and
resolve to accede to what is in the long term
interest of our democracy.
“It is therefore our considered opinion that the
judgement of the Court of Appeal is erroneous,
contradictory and a miscarriage of justice.
“The decision is therefore not acceptable to us
“Accordingly, our candidate, Prof. Jerry Gana, has
resolved to appeal the judgement at the Appeal
Court.”

Crime / Five Arrested In Italy For Forced Prostitution Of Nigerian Women by Truevine: 05:02 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Five people have been arrested in Italy for
smuggling Nigerian women into Europe and
forcing them into prostitution, according to Italian
Carabinieri Police.
The suspects, apprehended in the Sicilian town of
Messina, were part of an organised crime racket
that smuggled “at least 15’’ unaccompanied
minors into “several European Union countries’’
via Libya and Sicily, the police said in a
statement yesterday.
The syndicate relied on an Italian accomplice who
worked in a migrant charity.
According to Police, he would help the criminals
trace the women after their arrival in Sicily and
contribute to forcing them into prostitution.
The Carabinieri said they documented criminal
activity during the 2015 to 2017 period.
They said “black magic’’ rituals would be
performed on the young women before they left
Nigeria, to force them into submission.
Some of the arrested also dabbled in heroin
trafficking, police said.
In 2017, a report by the International Organisation
for Migration said three-quarters of the roughly
11,000 Nigerian women who landed in Italy in
2018 may have been taken there by s*x
traffickers.
The IOM, a UN agency, said it was difficult to
make precise estimates because most victims of
the s*x trade are afraid to speak up.
They are also afraid to seek assistance because
they are: ashamed; submissive to traffickers
accompanying them on migrant boats; or fear
retaliation against their relatives

World Politics / I Will Pay 100,000 Minimum Wage If Elected President – Sowore by Truevine: 10:01 pm On 1 Jan 2019
The presidential candidate of the African Action
Congress (AAC), Mr Omoyele Sowore, has
promised to pay workers 100,000 as minimum
wage if elected as the next president of the nation
on Feb. 16.
Sowore made the pledge at a town hall meeting
tagged: ‘The Candidates’ organised by the
MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with NTA
and DARIA media in Abuja.
He said that his administration would address the
menace of ghost workers by installing
technologies that would daily capture fingerprints
of workers and the hours spent at work.
He also said that he would ensure leakages were
effectively blocked and would enthrone proper
management of resources in the country if
elected.
The AAC presidential candidate said that his
administration would ensure efficient collection of
taxes, and that there would be no sacred cows.
According to him, most companies in Nigeria
collect tax from workers but do not remit to the
government, while others are under remitting.
On power supply, Sowore said when elected, he
would bring in solar panels that would generate
up to 4500 megawatts of electricity across the
country in less than a year.
He said there were investors looking for where to
build power stations, saying that all that was
lacking in Nigeria was good leadership.
Sowore said rather than selling national power
installations, license would be given to investors
to come in and generate power.
His running mate, Mr Rabiu Rufai, said the AAC
would pay a living wage and not just a minimum
wage to the Nigerian workers.
Rufai said that an average Nigerian worker spent
at least N1,000 daily on transportation.
He said that the proposed N27,000 by the Federal
Government was not enough as workers needed
to feed themselves and family, pay schools fees,
rents and make some savings as well.(NAN)

World Politics /  Sowore Pledges To Cut Nass Members’ Jumbo Pay by Truevine: 10:00 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Presidential Candidate, African Action Congress
(AAC), Mr Omoyele Sowore, on Wednesday, said if
elected into office, he would cut the jumbo pay of
the National Assembly members.
Sowore made the pledge at a town hall meeting
tagged: ‘’The Candidates” organised by the
MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with NTA
and DARIA media in Abuja.
“The issue of some people earning minimum wage
and others earning maximum wage where a
senator earns N14 million monthly is
unacceptable.
‘’Do you know that it will take a Nigerian worker
earning N30, 000 monthly about 38 years to earn
what a senator is earning per month?” he
queried.
Sowore, who described the trend as
disheartening, said ‘’our problem in Nigeria is not
wealth generation but wealth distribution.’’
‘’We will not allow illegality in National
Assembly,” he stressed.
He said his government would not only invest in
the education of the young people but provide 5
million jobs for the youth.
The AAC presidential candidate said the party
would employ between 300, 000 and 400, 000
personnel in the security sector so that the
country’s security could be strengthened.
‘’By this, the police and the army will be able to
keep us secured. Also, we will give study
allowances to students.
‘I believe with our resources, we can support our
young people, the elderly, etc,” he said.
He assured that productivity in the country would
be ensured ‘’when we invest in our people.”
‘’I am after the knowledge of Nigerians that we
can sell to the world, not after cocoa or so. We
will build innovative leaders when a university can
produce a student that is technologically-
inclined.”
On the insecurity in the country, his running mate,
Mr Rabiu Rufai, said the AAC would tackle the
problem when people are held accountable for
their actions.
‘’Nigeria will do better if we don’t condone
anybody irrespective of his tribe, religion or
region.” he said.(NAN)

Crime / Three Kenyans Charged In Us On Links With Isis by Truevine: 09:11 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Three Kenyans living in the United States have
been arrested by the Federal Bureau of
Investigations (FBI) and charged with conspiring
to provide material support to the Islamic State in
Iraq and Syria (Isis).
Federal prosecutors said Muse Abdikadir Muse,
Mohamud Abdikadir Muse and Mohamed Salat
Haji were arrested in Lansing, Michigan, on
Monday.
Investigators said Muse Abdikadir Muse had
bought an air ticket to Somalia from Grand
Rapids, where he was arrested.
An affidavit by the investigators said Mohamud
and Haji helped him buy the tickets, and also
drove him to the airport.
“He was checking in for a flight to Mogadishu,
Somalia, when he was arrested,” FBI said in on
Tuesday. It is not yet clear if the Muses are
related.
According to the FBI, the three recorded videos
pledging allegiance to Isis and expressed their
desire “to kill non-believers, and even to
potentially use a car for a martyrdom operation to
run down non-believers in the USA.”
The suspects came under police watch in April,
2016, when Mohamud Muse posted an item on
his Facebook wall suggesting that he supported
Isis.
Later, an FBI agent disguised as a recruiter
contacted him, according to US media reports.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) said the
three were planning a terrorist attack that would
see them use car bombs and ram “non-believers”
if they did not make it to Somalia.

World Politics / Apc Chieftain Urges Igp To Persecute Senator Orji, Abaribe, Others Over Alleged Criminal Conspiracy by Truevine: 07:26 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Nkem Nwosu, a chieftain of the All Progressives
Congress(APC) in Abia state, has asked the
Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu,
to investigate and persecute the immediate past
Governor of the state and the current Senator
representing Abia central in the Senate, Theodore
Orji, for alleged criminal conspiracy and unlawful
assembly.
He said the conducts of the PDP chieftains were
likely to cause the breach of peace contrary to
section 516,70 and 149(d) of the Criminal code
act.
Others mentioned by the APC chieftain to be
persecuted by the police, alongside Senator Orji,
included former National publicity secretary of the
Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Olisa Metuh, Col.
Austin Akobundu(rtd) and Senator Enyinnaya
Abaribe.
This was contained in a petition sent to the
Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu by
Nwosu, and issued to newsmen in Umuahia, the
state capital on Wednesday.
According to Nwosu’s petition, “the said conduct
of the suspects(Orji and co) enabled them to void
the mandate of Abia electorate and to impose as
Governor, a man who is unable to pay salaries
and pensions of Abia public service workforce, let
alone tackle other developmental challenges of
the state.
According to Nwosu’s petition, “the said conduct
of the suspects(Orji and co) enabled them to void
the mandate of Abia electorate and to impose as
Governor, a man who is unable to pay salaries
and pensions of Abia public service workforce, let
alone tackle order developmental challenges of
the state.
” The criminal offences committed on 12th April,
2015, has occasioned misery and death of so
many Abia people. Almost four years after the
said criminal offences, the suspects are walking
the length and breadth of Abia state, and indeed
Nigeria.
“As a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I
have the civic duty and obligation to bring the
said offences to the notice of the IGP of Police.
As you can see, this is not an election petition.
The INEC has done what its knows best with the
election petitions”.
He, therefore, called on the Inspector General of
Police to set the criminal law in motion against
the said PDP chieftains(suspects) without delay.
Meanwhile, the former Abia Governor, Senator
Theodore Orji, has denied that he invaded the
collation centre during the 2015 general elections.
He, however, urged the oppositions to engage in
an issued-based campaign, rather than trumping
up unnecessary lies and propaganda to score
cheap political points.

Crime / Cocaine Found In Chris Brown’s Hotel Room ‘not His’ – Lawyer by Truevine: 07:21 pm On 1 Jan 2019
French police probing rape claims against
American R&B star Chris Brown found cocaine
and cannabis in his Paris hotel suite, his lawyer
said Wednesday while denying that the cocaine
belonged to the singer.
Brown’s French lawyer, Raphael Chiche, confirmed
that the 29-year-old was found in possession of
cannabis during his arrest at the luxury Mandarin
Oriental hotel on Monday night over claims that
he assaulted a woman a week earlier.
But the Grammy Award-winning singer had a note
from his American doctor covering his use of the
drug for medicinal purposes, Chiche said.
The cocaine found “was not his” and “belonged to
those who had come to party in his suite on the
night of January 20-21,” the lawyer added.
Brown, his bodyguard and a friend were arrested
after a 25-year-old woman accused them of
raping her in the Mandarin Oriental, where he was
staying while attending shows during men’s
fashion week in the French capital.
After being held for 24 hours the three were
released without charge on Tuesday night.
Chiche said his client wanted to bring a
defamation lawsuit.
“He says he had no s*xual relations of any sort
with the complainant,” Chiche said.
The singer, who denies the allegations, posted a
picture on his Instagram account after his release
that read “This B!tch Lyin'”.
“I WANNA MAKE IT PERFECTLY CLEAR…… THIS
IS FALSE AND A WHOLE LOT OF CAP! (sic),” he
posted next to the picture.
Still Under Investigation
The prosecutor’s office said the three men were
still under investigation on suspicion of
aggravated rape and a drugs offence.
The alleged victim told police she met Brown in a
nightclub near the Champs-Elysees avenue with a
group of other women on the night of January 15.
She then agreed to go back to the singer’s hotel,

troubles than his hit releases in recent years.
In 2009 he was convicted of beating fellow singer

forced to miss the Grammy Awards because of
her injuries.
Brown was sentenced to five years’ probation and
six months of community service for the assault.
In 2014 he pleaded guilty to assaulting a fan in
Washington and two years later he was arrested
and charged with assault with a deadly weapon
following a standoff with Los Angeles police
officers.
He is best known for his hits in the mid-2000s
such as “Kiss, Kiss” and “Run It”.

Sports / Chelsea Boss Sarri Demands More From ‘individual’ Hazard by Truevine: 06:47 pm On 1 Jan 2019
Eden Hazard must deliver more to realise his full
potential and help dig Chelsea out of a slump in
form, manager Maurizio Sarri said on Wednesday.
Sarri heavily criticised his side’s mental strength
after they slipped to a 2-0 Premier League defeat
at Arsenal on Saturday, labelling his players
“difficult to motivate”.
However, Sarri’s tactics are also under the
spotlight as he has persisted with playing Hazard
in an unfamiliar centre-forward position over the
past month.
Chelsea look set to remedy their striker problem
with the imminent arrival of Gonzalo Higuain on
loan, who scored 38 goals in one season under
Sarri at Napoli in 2015/16.
That should see Hazard return to his favoured
role on the left side of a front three, and Sarri
wants more from the man voted the second best
player at last year’s World Cup.
“In this moment, he’s more an individual player
than a leader,” said Sarri on Wednesday.
“He is very important for us, of course, because
he is a great player. He always can win the match
in two minutes. Sometimes in one minute. But, at
the moment, he’s not a leader.”
Hazard’s future is also a source of fevered
speculation, with the player refusing to extend his
current Chelsea deal, which expires in 2020.
In an interview with France Football this week
Hazard again raised the possibility he could move
to Real Madrid and admitted he has frustrated all
of his previous coaches.
“I think he said that coaches told him that he
needs to do more,” added Sarri. “I think he has to
do more. Because the potential is higher than the
performances. He has to respect first of all
himself. He has to do more.”
And Sarri also acknowledged that Hazard’s desire
to get on the ball as much as possible has
restricted his impact when playing in a central
role.
“Eden is at the moment a wonderful player, but
an individual player. He is an instinctive player so
for him it is difficult to play in only one position.
“He likes very much to go to the ball so for him, I
think it is very difficult to play as a striker.”
Sarri’s public reaction to the defeat at Arsenal
has raised questions over his future at Stamford
Bridge just six months into his reign in charge.
Chelsea, who are fourth in the Premier League,
host Tottenham in the second leg of their League
Cup semi-final on Thursday, trailing 1-0 from the
first leg.
