World Politics / Un Asks Fg To Investigate Attack On Endsars Protesters In Lekki by admin: 04:09 pm On 10 Oct 2020

THE UNITED NATIONS (UN) HAS CONDEMNED THE ATTACK ON #ENDSARS PROTESTERS BY SECURITY OPERATIVES AT THE LEKKI TOLL GATE IN LAGOS STATE.

António Guterres, UN secretary-general, in a statement by Stephane Dujarric, his spokesman, asked the federal government to probe the incident and bring the perpetrators to book.

Some protesters were reportedly killed and several others injured on Tuesday night after security operatives opened fire on protesters agitating against police brutality.

Guterres noted that the UN is abreast the situation while calling on the government to bring the unrest to a stop.

“The Secretary-General is following recent developments in Nigeria and calls for an end to reported police brutality and abuses. He condemns the violent escalation on 20 October in Lagos which resulted in multiple deaths and caused many injuries. He expresses his condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured,” the statement on the UN website read.

“He calls on the Nigerian authorities to investigate these incidents and hold the perpetrators accountable.

‘The Secretary-General urges the security forces to act at all times with maximum restraint while calling on protestors to demonstrate peacefully and to refrain from violence.

“The Secretary-General encourages the authorities to swiftly explore avenues to de-escalate the situation. He reiterates the readiness of the United Nations to support national efforts towards finding a solution.”

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of the state, had earlier claimed that there were no casualties in the attack.

He, however, later confirmed the death of one person at Reddington Hospital.

The governor also denied any involvement of the state in the incident, blaming it on “forces beyond his direct control”.

The United Kingdom parliament has also said it will consider a petition asking the country to sanction the federal government for human rights abuses over the #EndSARS campaign.

As of Wednesday morning, the petition has garnered over 133,000 signatures — less than 24 hours after it was created.

Crime / Ortom Swears-in Panel Of Inquiry To Investigate Police Brutality In Benue by admin: 04:08 pm On 10 Oct 2020

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Wednesday, inaugurated an eight-member Judicial Panel of Inquiry into human rights violations by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, unit of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, in the state.

Ortom said the inaugurated panel was aimed at addressing the complaints by the End SARS protesters.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony at the state’s Government House, the governor said the constitution and swearing-in of the panel followed the resolution of the National Economic Council at its 108th meeting in Abuja recently.

He stressed that the protests had challenged all leaders to rise and demonstrate sincerity and commitment in tackling the nation’s challenges.

Ortom said the panel, which is headed by a retired Chief Judge of the State, Justice Adam Onum, has six months to complete its assignment and urged members to justify the confidence reposed in them.

He also disclosed that in line with the resolutions of the National Economic Council, his administration would soon set up the Special Security and Human Rights Committee to monitor activities of the Special or Tactical units to be established by the Nigeria Police Force.

“The protests have therefore provided us leaders with the opportunity to correct decades of illegalities and injustices meted on the people. It is against this background that we are today carrying out this very important state function of inaugurating the Judicial Panel of Inquiry,” the governor said.

Retired Justice Adam Onum on behalf of other members, thanked the Governor for the trust to carry out the task and pledged commitment and fair hearing to all parties.

Other members of the panel include Mrs. Josephine Haba, Pharmacist Moses Asoo, Anthony Ogboji retired Commissioner of Police, Ityonongo Terdoo John Mark, Joshua Tiv, Joshua Tyoyer and Edward Yange who also doubles as Secretary.

The Judicial Panel of Inquiry is to conclude its assignment within six months.

The panel’s terms of reference include to receive and investigate complaints of Police brutality, human rights violations or related extra-judicial killings, recommend compensation and other remedial measures where appropriate.

Sports / Wnba Star Maya Moore Marries Jonathan Irons After Helping Overturn His Prison by admin: 08:18 pm On 9 Sep 2020
Four-time WNBA champion Maya Moore has tied the knot with Jonathan Irons, the man whose wrongful conviction she helped overturn.

The pair met in 1998 in a prison ministry when Moore was a teenager and Irons was serving a 50-year sentence for burglary and assaulting a homeowner with a gun -- a conviction that was overturned by a judge in March this year.

He walked free in July having served 22 years of the sentence, and Moore, who sat out an entire season to help overturn the conviction, revealed on Wednesday that the pair had married.
"We wanted to announce that we are super excited to continue the work that we've been doing together but doing it as a married couple," Moore told Good Morning America.
"We got married a couple of months ago and we are excited to just continue this new chapter of life together."
The pair are currently working to educate the American public about the voting process ahead this year's Presidential election and plan to continue campaigning for criminal justice reform.
Irons said his relationship with Moore blossomed while she helped free him from his wrongful conviction.
"I wanted to marry her but at the same time protect her because being in a relationship with a man in prison, it's extremely difficult and painful," he told GMA.
"And I didn't want her to feel trapped and I wanted her to feel open and have the ability any time (for me to say) if this is too much for you, go and find somebody. Live your life. Because this is hard."

He proposed to her in a hotel room earlier this year after his release: "It was just me and her in the room and I got down on my knees and I looked up at her and she kind of knew what was going on and I said, 'will you marry me,' she said, 'yes.'"
Moore, 31, is skipping two WNBA seasons to focus on criminal justice reform.
She's considered one of the greatest women's basketball players of all time and won WNBA titles with the Minnesota Lynx in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017.
After serving 22 years in prison, Irons said after this release that he didn't blame his accuser and wants to focus his time on helping others in the same position he was in.

US Politics / Trump Fumbles During Tough Encounter With Undecided Voters by admin: 02:23 pm On 9 Sep 2020

President Donald Trump faced life outside his own political bubble on Tuesday, where his self-congratulation, buck passing and audacious falsehoods conspicuously failed to meet the moment when he was confronted by undecided voters.

Trump appeared at an ABC News town hall in Philadelphia, and peppered a socially distanced audience with the rhetoric and talking points that delight his loyal base. But if his goal was to satisfy relatively small groups of voters who polls show haven't yet made up their mind, the President appeared to fall short and rarely addressed the substance of questions about his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, race relations and health care.
It was an unusual moment of exposure for a leader who demands constant public praise from his subordinates. On Tuesday night, audience members granted him the respect due to his office but none of the adulation he craves.

Trump was largely cordial and likely came across as strong to voters that love him. But his performance offered Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden multiple openings only two weeks before their first debate clash -- one of the last potential turning points of the White House race. First-term presidents who have spent years expecting deference from everyone they meet often get a shock in the first debate showdown with a challenger keen to get in their grill. Tuesday's event suggests the surprise may be especially acute for Trump when he faces Biden on September 29.
Answers that normally draw wild cheers at Trump's packed campaign events fell flat when he was confronted by voters who appeared to want to cut through bluster and propaganda. And his responses did little to recognize the magnitude of the challenges facing the nation in a fearful year, suggesting that the President has yet to find the language or the appeals that might turn around an election he so far seems to be losing.
On a day when America recorded more than 1,400 new deaths from Covid-19, Trump effectively told the country to ignore his own words to Bob Woodward downplaying the threat early this year even though he knew how bad it was.
He said he did a "tremendous" job on the virus, insisted "it's going to disappear" and that "a lot of people think masks are not good." Asked who said masks aren't good, Trump replied, "Waiters." He bizarrely said "herd mentality" would make it go away, in an apparent reference to herd immunity that medical experts say could cost several million lives. The President has pounced on Biden's verbal slips as evidence that he lacks the mental capacity to be President. But his own confusing answers after six months supposedly leading the national effort to fight the pandemic failed to inspire confidence that he fully understands the implications of the emergency even now.
He also illogically complained that Biden, who has no power, had not followed through on a national mask mandate and claimed falsely the US response to the crisis was the best in the world. And the President denied any blame for how the pandemic has turned out -- placing the entire responsibility on China, where the virus first emerged, and several times complained he is not getting the credit he deserves.
At the end of the night, the President was asked by a voter named Ashley West to cite the most difficult part of his presidency and asked what he had learned from it -- and in a way that seemed jarring given that the 200,000th American will soon die from the disease, the President reflected on his own personal sense of loss.
"I learned that life is very fragile. I knew people that were powerful people, strong people, good people, and they got knocked out by this, and died. Six people. It was five until about two weeks ago. Now, it's six," Trump said.
Trump defends himself
The President became most exercised when denying reports that he referred to US war dead as "losers" and "s**kers," calling them "fake." He made halting attempts to show empathy to a new US citizen from the Dominican Republic who lost her mother to breast cancer complications a month ago and asked him a question about immigration. Trump responded by telling her that it was terrible that people died alone in hospital due to Covid-19 -- and turned the answer into an infomercial for his pandemic leadership. Biden, who has buried a first wife and two children in a life marked by tragedy, is highlighting his own empathy as a balm for the country at a grief-wracked moment.
Trump shrugged off questioners who asked him if he agreed America needed to reexamine its painful history on race, again arguing that there were a few "bad apples" in the police force who "choked" in incidents in which unarmed Black Americans were killed.
The President also falsely claimed that Democrats wanted to remove protections for patients with pre-existing conditions introduced under Obamacare. His own administration is currently arguing a Supreme Court case trying to destroy the Affordable Care Act, while Democrats seek to preserve the law. While Trump says he would protect pre-existing conditions, he has offered no credible health plan.
The President's appearance came in a crucial swing state at a moment when he is trailing Biden by nine points in the CNN Poll of Polls as the country faces concurrent crises: a pandemic, the consequent economic crash, a racial reckoning and historic fires in Western states.
Nine percent of voters in a CNN/SSRS poll this month said they might still change their mind about who they will vote for. Trump's task in the election appears to be to add less fervent voters to his coalition after spending four years incessantly playing to his base. But while his strongest moments Tuesday came on ending foreign wars and on the economy, and he likely pleased supporters with his unequivocal pro-police statements, the President offered few new policies or approaches at the event that differed from positions in three years when his approval rating has rarely climbed above the low 40s.
Trump's campaign insists untapped seams of pro-Trump voters who sat on the sidelines in 2016 are being ignored by pollsters and will embrace the President's hardline culture war rhetoric to sweep him to a second term.
Trump again denies evidence of his own voice
The town hall event exactly seven weeks before Election Day was a reminder of the kind of chaos, falsehoods and divisiveness that is a selling point for the President's most faithful voters but is the kind of behavior that may prompt an undecided voter to turn away.
The stream of lies and alternative realities that the President promoted recalled a statement attributed to former Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats in Woodward's book "Rage" that was published on Tuesday.
"To him a lie is not a lie. It's just what he thinks. He doesn't know the difference between the truth and a lie," Coats is quoted as saying to former Secretary of Defense James Mattis.
Such commentary was borne out when Trump responded to a question by a first time voter from Pittsburgh who asked why he was captured on tapes made by Woodward as downplaying the pandemic.
"Yeah, well, I didn't downplay it. I, actually, in many ways, I up-played it, in terms of action," he said.
In essence, the President is inviting voters to refuse to believe the evidence of their own ears on his early attitude to the worst domestic crisis since World War II that has now killed 195,000 Americans and pitched 30 million out of work.
He is implicitly arguing that not only does he not deserve any blame for a response that lags other industrialized nations -- the US has 4% of the world's population and more than 20% of the Covid-19 cases and deaths.
But such a view relies on an interpretation that distorts the traditional sense that the buck stops on the Oval Office desk and instead relies on voters to believe a flagrant act of salesmanship that defies the reality of their own lives.
After Trump told Fox News earlier Tuesday that he had read Woodward's book on Monday night, and found it "boring," Woodward said that the President was living in an "Orwellian world."
"He was told, he knew, he told me about it," the veteran reporter told CNN's Anderson Cooper.
"I don't know, to be honest, whether he's got it straight in his head what is real and what is
real

Sports / Serena Williams Reaches Us Open Semifinals After Rallying Against Fellow Mom by admin: 01:33 am On 9 Sep 2020
Williams overcame the varied game of Tsvetana Pironkova 4-6 6-3 6-2 in a thriller in New York to reach the semifinals at her home major for the 11th straight time. Last year's men's finalist, Daniil Medvedev, swept past Russian compatriot Andrey Rublev 7-6 (6) 6-3 7-6 (5) to also make the semifinals.
Williams has erased deficits in her last three matches. She trailed by a set to 2017 champion Sloane Stephens in the third round and was behind 2-0 in the third set to Maria Sakkari -- who beat Williams at a warmup event preceding the US Open -- on Monday.
"I just feel like -- I'm okay," said Williams. "I'm ready to play three sets every match if I have to. It doesn't matter. A win is a win."
Another mom could await in the semifinals Thursday, if twice Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka -- who has also had some epic contests with Williams -- downs Belgium's Elise Mertens. The three moms in the quarterfinals were the most ever at a major in the Open Era.
Williams had to rally from a set and break down against Pironkova, who officially has no ranking after playing her first tournament in three years.

Helping her decision was a rule change allowing moms to come back with the same ranking they held when they left, for a certain number of events.
Still, Pironkova's special ranking sits at 123rd, which in normal circumstances would have meant only a spot in qualifying, not the main draw.
But with qualifying scrapped to limit the numbers on site at Flushing Meadows as part of the US Open's bubble and other players withdrawing -- mostly due to coronavirus concerns -- the 32-year-old snuck into the 128-player singles field. There are no fans at this year's tournament, too.
She eliminated a two-time Grand Slam champion, Garbine Muguruza, in the second round and came close to ousting the 38-year-old Williams in what would have been one of the biggest Grand Slam upsets in recent history.
"So it's quite a long journey, and it's been amazing. It still is," said Pironkova. "I just feel privileged to be here and to be able to play my favorite sport in such a big arena. So it's amazing."
Epic rallies
The contest featured several highlight reel rallies, including one of 24 shots in a game that Williams broke in for 5-3 in the second set. Pironkova dragged Wiliams from side to side in the early going, with her opponent doing more of it herself later. The Bulgarian also employed her unorthodox slice forehand.
They traded laser backhands down the line and such was Pironkova's disguise on her serve that Williams was forced to use her left hand on a return. It led to a break of serve.
"Actually been hitting a little lefty in my practice but not on purpose," Williams said. "I noticed the other day, I hit a lefty shot and I was just in practice being super intense, and I guess it came through in the match.
"So when you're in a position like that...this is the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, and I was just trying to do everything I can whether righty or lefty."
The first game of the decider proved pivotal.
With Pironkova holding a game point, she was unable to put away a forehand volley, allowing Williams to rip a pass to finish the point. Williams made her pay by breaking and never trailed again.
Willliams got an insurance break for 5-2 after Pironkova built a 40-15 advantage. She hit 20 aces overall, her most in eight years. The two exchanged a smile at the net when it ended.

US Politics / Goya 'buy-cott' Begins As Customers Load Up On Product After Trump Backlash by admin: 01:24 pm On 7 Jul 2020
Goya 'buy-cott' begins as customers load up on product after Trump backlash
Many took to social media to express their displeasure with Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue after he praised President Trump at a White House event on Thursday, but others are flipping the narrative and calling for a Goya Foods "buy-cott."

"My brother came up with a terrific idea and I am encouraging all to join me in purchasing $10 worth of Goya Foods products and donating them to your local food bank," self-described "conservatarian" radio host Mike Opelka wrote on Twitter. "Let's push a BUY-cott, not a boycott. Let's show the #Goyaway people what compassion can do.

The controversy has inspired some Goya Foods fans to give back. v*rg*nia resident Casey Harper started a GoFundMe on Saturday to buy Goya products to donate food pantries. The page is already more than halfway to its $10,000 goal.

"I'm not surprised we have raised so much because people are tired of having to walk on eggshells in political discourse," Harper told FOX Business. "Also, Americans are fundamentally generous people so a chance to feed the hungry and stand up to cancel culture was an easy win."

Goya Foods touted its charitable giving on Friday after calls for a boycott, including from progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Goya Foods said it has given "two million pounds of food to food banks across the nation who are in desperate need of food for families impacted by COVID19."

Robert Unanue, head of the New Jersey-based company, said Friday the boycott is "a reflection of a division that exists today in our country" that is "killing our nation."

“We're with the president. We're with this country — right, left, center, up and down," Unanue told "Varney & Co."

Goya Foods claims to be the largest Hispanic-owned food label in the country.

Crime / Charles Obi Odili: No 40 Billion Is Missing At Nddc by admin: 01:21 pm On 7 Jul 2020

The management of the Niger Delta Development Commission has been inundated by enquiries from stakeholders following allegations that the expanded Interim Management Committee (IMC) misappropriated N40 billion between February 20 and May 5, 2020.
Although most of our stakeholders are aware of the malevolent intentions of those making these allegations, we believe that we owe them a duty of transparency to present the true financial picture of payments by the commission during the period.

We are therefore taking the unusual step of publishing ALL payments made by the Commission between February 20, when the expanded IMC came into office and May 5 when the allegations were made. The list covers the beneficiaries of the payments, the projects which they executed and for which the commission had a contractual obligation to pay, the amount paid and the date and time of payment. The IMC has only paid out N35.3 billion to vendors and contractors within the period. The debts paid cover historical debts to vendors, some of whom have been owed between N1 million and N3 million, for up to eight years. The payments were intended to save lives and livelihoods as well as alleviate the suffering in the region.

Most of the vendors borrowed money from banks to render services to the Commission. Some became very ill and were in hospital. Some of the contractors have died waiting to be paid for jobs they executed for the Commission. There was nothing the Commission could have done than respond to what had become a humane issue. It is pertinent for the Commission to make a few points.

1. The Niger Delta Development Commission is a going concern. As a result, every management inherits both its assets and liabilities. In the case of this Interim Management Committee, it inherited liabilities of N2 trillion. These are for supplies for the running of the Commission, services provided to the people of the Niger Delta in discharge of the mandate of the Commission and projects executed in the nine states. The Commission has a duty to settle contractual claims. Failure to do this in the past has caused the Commission millions Naira in legal fees, endless time in courts and garnishee orders on its account. The mandate handed down to this IMC by Mr President through the Hon Minister of Niger Delta Affairs is that the Commission must change the ways of the past. Acting responsibly in honouring obligations is part of that change ethos.

2. The Commission carried out a verification and valuation of the debts it settled. Some of the claims were higher but at the end of verification were reduced. The Commission also refused to pay fraudulent claims even though they were pushed by powerful forces. The case of 132 claims, amounting to N6.4 billion, for skills acquisition programmes which were never executed is but one example.

3. From the list we are publishing today, no payment was made to the supervising minister, Senator Godswill Akpabio, (the Honourable Minister of Niger Delta Affairs) or any member of the IMC or any person related to them. All the payments were for debts incurred before the IMC came into office or Senator Akpabio became supervising minister. In other words, these debts cover transactions that predate the Hon Minister and the IMC. This clarification has become necessary because of the antics of chartered character assassins stomach, propagandists and voices for hire who have accused the Hon Minister and the IMC of phantom, phoney and illusory financial infractions at the Commission.

4. The IMC has not awarded any contract, since its inception, apart from the N6.25 billion COVID 19 intervention approved by Mr President. That approval saved lives in the region. The COVID contract had three components: procurement of medical equipment, supply of food palliatives and public enlightenment. The Commission procured 27 trilogy, 202 ventilators, 65 ECG Machines, 54 RT PCR Machines, 18 APC smart digital UPS 5KVA, 36 infra red thermometers, 18 double jar suction machines, 18 Fluid warmers, 18 multi parameter patient monitors, 94 standard ICU beds, 95 oxygen cylinders, 95 oxygen masks, 95 infusion pumps, 18 mobile X-ray machines, 18 mobile ultrasound machines, 18 mobile dialysis machines, 18 arterial blood gas machines, sanitizers and syringe pumps. All the procured equipment have been distributed to the nine Niger delta states and received by the state governors. Beyond COVID 19, this intervention has boosted the healthcare delivery capacity of the nine states. Food palliatives have been supplied to vulnerable people in all the states in the region. The public enlightenment campaign has been effective in creating the right awareness and changing attitudes. We are grateful to Mr President for this intervention, which have saved lives in the region.

5. As the IMC has not awarded any other contract, it means it has not paid for any contract for which it initiated.

6. The President has ordered a forensic audit on the Commission operations of the Commission for the past 18 years. That audit will value and verify all claims against the Commission. It will also bring to account those who looted the commonwealth of the people of the Niger Delta to fund their ego and inordinate greed for luxury and power. The task of the IMC is to provide the enabling environment for the exercise to succeed. This involves providing the auditors with unhindered access to project files, accounting documents and staff; security for the team in the nine states, and media/ communications/community relations support.

7. We believe that the Commission's debt mountain of N2 trillion Naira will be reduced at the end of the forensic audit exercise. The Commission has made this publication for the sake of transparency. We believe this will reassure our stakeholders of the high level of probity, integrity and sense of responsibility being brought into the running of the affairs of the Commission by the IMC. As for those who relish in making wild allegations, in the vain and unrealistic hope that they can distract the IMC to truncate the Forensic Audit exercise, we say that they have failed. Judgment day is nigh!

US Politics / Fresh Scrutiny For Fox's Tucker Carlson As Top Writer Quits Over Bigoted Posts by admin: 01:19 pm On 7 Jul 2020
The revelation that Fox News prime-time star Tucker Carlson's top writer had posted racist, s*xist and homophobic sentiments online for years under a pseudonym has led to renewed scrutiny of Carlson's own commentaries, which have inspired a series of advertising boycotts.

On Monday, Carlson is set to address the growing controversy, which led to the resignation of the writer, Blake Neff, after questions were raised by CNN's Oliver Darcy. It also led to a condemnation of Neff's views by the network's chief executive.

In an internal memo, Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott and President and Executive Editor Jay Wallace called the postings "horrific racist, misogynistic and homophobic behavior." Neff had, among other things, assailed the intelligence of Black Americans, African immigrants and Asian Americans, according to CNN. He also repeatedly demeaned a woman, posting details about her dating life and mocking her on personal terms.

Carlson has publicly cited the importance of the value of Neff's work on his show and for Carlson's earlier book. The host has courted criticism repeatedly for severe rhetoric, especially toward people of color, immigrants and women.

"I think his show is very close to what his writer, Blake Neff was doing, apparently anonymously for five years," former CNN and NBC host Soledad O'Brien, who is Black and Latina, tells NPR. On his program, she says, Carlson is "anti-immigrant, he's frequently racist. He says despicable things about women, he says despicable things about Asians. He says despicable things about Latinos. He talks about the kind of people who 'hate' America."

President Trump is known to be a frequent viewer and often cites Carlson's arguments publicly. In recent days, some Republican strategists have even looked to Carlson as a Republican presidential candidate in 2024 should Trump lose this November.

The irony is that even as Carlson has just set a record for viewers for any cable news show in the history of the industry in this country, sponsors are peeling away.

An estimated 4.3 million Americans tuned in to watch his program each night for the second quarter of this year — more than anyone ever in cable news. And yet Disney, Papa John's, and T-Mobile are among the most recent major advertisers who have pulled commercials from the show, in their cases, citing his remarks about Black Lives Matter protests.

"This may be a lot of things, this moment we are living through, but it is definitely not about Black lives," Carlson said in early June. "Remember that when they come for you. And at this rate, they will." (A Fox News spokesperson told reporters that "they" referred to Democrats, not Black protesters.)

Fox did not comment beyond the memo from Scott and Wallace, which was shared with reporters and offered neither support nor criticism for Carlson. The two executives also announced that Carlson would address the controversy on his program Monday. Carlson declined several requests for comment from NPR.

These concerns are not new, along with pressures on and from advertisers.

Back in 2018, for example, Carlson told his viewers: "Our leaders demand we shut up and accept this. We have a moral obligation to admit the world's poor, they tell us, even if it makes our own country poorer and dirtier and more divided."

Fox News is part of Rupert Murdoch's larger media empire. Last year, Joseph Azam, a former lawyer and senior vice president for Murdoch's publishing arm, told NPR that Carlson's comments on immigration and rhetoric from other Fox News hosts led him to leave the company. Azam is Muslim and an immigrant from Afghanistan.

Just last week, Carlson questioned the patriotism of two Democratic members of Congress who are both women of color: Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, who immigrated from Somalia, and Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth, whose mother is Thai of Chinese descent.

Duckworth is a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. She lost both her legs and partial use of an arm when a helicopter she was piloting was shot down by Iraqi insurgents in 2004. After Duckworth tweeted in response that Carlson should "walk a mile in my legs and then tell me whether or not I love America," Carlson escalated his attacks the next night, calling her a "coward" and a "fraud."

On his show, Carlson has hosted Pete D'Abrosca, who has expressed sympathy for alt-right leaders; the British commentator Katie Hopkins, banned from Twitter for violating its hateful conduct policy and who told his viewers that white Christian women were "endangered"; and disgraced U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who Carlson defended for tweeting that America could not "restore our civilization with somebody else's babies."

Similarly, the Daily Caller, a publication which Carlson co-founded and in which he owned a major stake until last month, has repeatedly faced public outcry over various contributors and staffers who were revealed to have written white supremacist rhetoric on other platforms and outlets.

White nationalists including David Duke and Richard Spencer have hailed Carlson's show as echoing their own talking points. For his part, Carlson has called the idea of white supremacy in the U.S. a hoax.

"Tucker's show itself skates that line very closely," says O'Brien, now an independent television host, reporter and producer. "He's a guy who's beloved by white supremacists. I mean, clearly, they say so. That is an indication that he says the kinds of things that they like to hear. He frames arguments that are basically white supremacist argument. He's not going to use the N-word on TV, certainly. But I think he goes right up to that line."

Last year, when the liberal watchdog Media Matters published a series of offensive past remarks Carlson had made about women on radio shows, the Fox News host issued his own challenge in return:

"Rather than express the usual ritual contrition, how about this: I'm on television every weeknight live for an hour. If you want to know what I think, you can watch."

His Monday show, on which he is to address his former writer's writings, begins 8 p.m. ET.

Sports / Tammy Abraham Questions Lampard's Tactics After Loss To Sheffield by admin: 01:14 pm On 7 Jul 2020

Tammy Abraham admits that Chelsea need to change their style of play under Frank Lampard after their shock 3-0 thrashing at Sheffield United on Saturday.

The Blues went to Sheffield third in the table and seemingly in decent form, but were hammered 3-0 by the Blades thanks to two goals from David McGoldrick and one from Oli McBurnie.

Chelsea’s top four spot is now under serious threat, with Leicester and Manchester United hot on their heels and Wolves not too far behind either.

They will be expected to bounce back on Tuesday night when they host bottom club Norwich at Stamford Bridge, but Abraham says they need to have a rethink of how they play.

The England striker feels the Blues are far too open, which gives them a constant attacking threat, but sees them far too prone to conceding.

‘Yeah, of course it’s fair,’ Abraham told Stadium Astro when asked if it’s fair that Chelsea may need to change their style.

‘We know that ourselves, we throw so many bodies forward.

‘We’re very vulnerable when we lose the ball higher up the pitch and that’s something we need to improve on.

We’re still a young, learning team. ‘If we want to be the best, if we want to win titles and leagues that’s something we’ll have to manage.’

Sheffield United cemented seventh place in the Premier League with the impressive victory as they continue their unlikely quest for European football next season.

Abraham admitted Chris Wilder’s side were impressive, but Chelsea were also well below par in their performance.

‘I just feel like we didn’t start sharp today,’ said the 22-year-old. ‘Give credit to Sheffield United, they disrupted the way we wanted to play.

‘They scored an early goal which frustrated us. We didn’t react. We made changes at half-time which kind of improved the game a bit but we just couldn’t get that goal today.’

Chelsea’s remaining three Premier League games are at home against Norwich, away at Liverpool and finally against Wolves at Stamford Bridge.

Sports / Manchester City Wins Appeal, To Play In Champions League Next Season by admin: 01:10 pm On 7 Jul 2020

Manchester City have won their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over alleged financial fair play (FFP) violations and are free to play in the Champions League next season, it was announced on Monday.

City were originally banned from European competitions for two seasons but won their appeal to CAS, meaning fifth place in the Premier League will no longer qualify for the Champions League. Manchester United occupy fifth in the table as it stands.

A statement from CAS read: "The CAS award emphasized that most of the alleged breaches reported by the Adjudicatory Chamber of the CFCB were either not established or time-barred.

"As the charges with respect to any dishonest concealment of equity funding were clearly more significant violations than obstructing the CFCB's investigations, it was not appropriate to impose a ban on participating in UEFA's club competitions for MCFC's failure to cooperate with the CFCB's investigations alone."

City took their case to CAS on June 8 after they were initially handed a two-year ban from UEFA competition and a €30 million ($33m) fine issued to them by the Adjudicatory Chamber of the Independent Club Financial Control Body (CFCB). Following Monday's verdict, the fine was reduced to €10m.

A Manchester City statement read: "Whilst Manchester City and its legal advisors are yet to review the full ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the Club welcomes the implications of today's ruling as a validation of the Club's position and the body of evidence that it was able to present. The Club wishes to thank the panel members for their diligence and the due process that they administered."

The CFCB found that City "committed serious breaches" of FFP regulations -- which limit the net losses clubs can accrue over a three-year period -- between 2012 and 2016 and failed to cooperate with the subsequent investigation.

It was said that the club overstated "its sponsorship revenue in its accounts and in the break-even information submitted to UEFA between 2012 and 2016."

In response, City claimed the process was "flawed" and said there was "irrefutable evidence" that would lead to them winning an appeal. FFP was introduced by UEFA at the start of the 2011-12 campaign, as a way of stopping clubs falling into financial difficulties by overspending.

Ahead of Monday's verdict, manager Pep Guardiola had also voiced his confidence that City would get the ban overturned.

"The intention is every season to play in the Champions League as best as possible, it's not about Monday," Guardiola said.

"On Monday, I'm so confident because I know and hear the arguments of the club. Next season we will be there and after I will give my opinion and the club will give a statement."

City are also still able to compete in this season's Champions League. They hold a 2-1 first-leg lead over Real Madrid in the round of 16, and will play either Juventus or Lyon in the quarterfinals if they progress.

World Politics / Arthur Eze: Only God Can Make An Igbo Man President by admin: 01:05 pm On 7 Jul 2020

Billionaire oil magnate, Prince Arthur Eze, has said it will take God for an Igbo man to become Nigeria’s President.

According to him, the Igbo people do not love another and are not united.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Eze advised the Ndigbo not to crave for a President of Igbo extraction but a President who would champion their interest irrespective of his tribe.

He spoke to journalists in Ukpo, Anambra State, on Sunday, during a church service.

He declared that he would support a good leader as Nigerian President irrespective of the person’s ethnic group.

Eze said, “For the Igbo to be President, they must love themselves. Do they love themselves? The North is very kind. If you go to northern Nigerian, you will see churches everywhere. There are churches in Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna, Abuja and others yet they say there is hatred. Do we (Igbo) love ourselves?

“Only God can make an Igbo man President. We shall pray to God to find an Igbo man who has character to help people. I would prefer someone who has conscience; somebody who will remember me. I don’t care where you come from.

“I went to the North, they didn’t know who I was. They gave me $12m for the construction of Kano TV in 1980. I didn’t have one naira then. It was the same thing in Katsina, Borno and Kaduna. Then, they put me in oil business. They didn’t care where I came from. Tell me any Igbo man who can do that?”

Business/Investments / Why Facebook Failed Its Civil Rights Audit by admin: 02:44 pm On 7 Jul 2020
Facebook has failed on civil rights.

On Wednesday, after two years of work, the social media giant finally released the results of its independent audit, a wide-ranging report on the state of civil rights on Facebook, from hate speech to advertising to algorithmic bias. The auditors found that the company simply hasn’t done enough to combat hate and abuse on its platform.

Following up on two previous updates in December 2018 and June 2019, the audit concludes that the company’s handling of civil rights issues is “too reactive and piecemeal,” and ultimately raises doubts about whether Facebook is actually committed to addressing its myriad problems.

That’s especially concerning given that the November 2020 election is just months away.

Former ACLU director Laura W. Murphy, who led the report along with civil rights attorney Megan Cacace, compared Facebook’s work to climbing Mount Everest. She noted that though the social media company had made some progress, Facebook still hadn’t invested enough resources or moved quickly enough to address its many civil rights challenges, creating “legitimate questions about Facebook’s full-throated commitment to reaching the summit.”

The audit, which was commissioned by Facebook at the urging of civil rights leaders and politicians, comes amid a growing advertiser boycott of the platform called Stop Hate for Profit, which is led by civil rights groups including the NAACP, the Anti-Defamation League, and Color of Change, none of which seem to have any plans to halt their campaign. More than 1,000 companies have now signed on, despite CEO Mark Zuckerberg dismissing its impact.

For these leaders of the boycott, who have long tried to work alongside Facebook, the findings of the audit confirm much of what they’ve previously said about the company: that it isn’t taking issues around hate speech, bias, polarization, and diversity seriously enough.

“Ridding the platform of hate and misinformation against Black people only became a priority when there was a PR crisis to endure,” said Rashad Robinson, the president of Color of Change, who hinted that Congress may have a role in protecting civil rights on the ever-embattled platform.

The report is an important one for Facebook’s reputation, but it isn’t binding. Facebook can choose to implement the recommendations in the report or to dismiss them — which is what some advocates like Robinson fear. In a blog post announcing the report’s release on Wednesday, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said that the company “won’t make every change they [auditors] call for,” but that it “will put more of their proposals into practice.”

Regardless of what the company ends up doing, the audit serves as a thorough examination of Facebook’s long-standing struggle to reconcile its stated values around free speech with the history of harm caused by unchecked vitriol and discrimination on its platform. With that overarching theme in mind, here are five key takeaways about Facebook and civil rights from the 89-page report.

1) Holding Trump to a different standard sets a troubling precedent
Facebook has failed to penalize Trump for violating its community guidelines, the auditors say, which stands “to gut policies” that had represented progress for civil rights on the platform. The report specifically highlights a group of Trump’s posts that made misleading claims about voting and the president’s infamous “looting … shooting” post about protesters. Echoing previous concerns from civil rights groups, the auditors say these posts clearly violate Facebook’s community guidelines and that not removing them establishes a concerning precedent for Trump and other politicians.

The voting-related posts by Trump referenced in the report include false claims about mail-in ballots in California, Michigan, and Nevada. Facebook ultimately decided that these posts did not violate its guidelines, arguing in the case of Michigan and Nevada that the language in the posts was merely “challenging the legality of officials.” The auditors explain that they “vehemently expressed” their view that the posts violated policy but were “not afforded an opportunity to speak directly to decision-makers” until after the final decision was made.

Facebook’s decisions, they said, constitute a “tremendous setback for all of the policies that attempt to ban voter suppression on Facebook.”

Trump’s “looting ... shooting” post represents a similar pattern of self-justified inaction. In that post, the president appeared to threaten violence against Black Lives Matter protesters, using language that echoed Civil Rights-era white segregationists. Though Facebook executives called the White House requesting that Trump change or delete the post, the company ultimately did nothing about it. By contrast, Twitter chose to label an identical post by President Trump on its platform for violating its rules about glorifying violence.

Facebook defended its decision by arguing that threats of state action are allowed on the platform. The auditors say that logic ignored “how such statements, especially when made by those in power and targeted toward an identifiable, minority community, condone vigilantism and legitimize violence against that community.“ They added, “Random shooting is not a legitimate state use of force.” Again, the auditors say they were not included in the decision-making process in time. Facebook’s decision about the “looting … shooting” post, which Mark Zuckerberg later defended on a call with employees, prompted criticism from company executives and a virtual employee walkout. It was one of the incidents that inspired the Stop Hate for Profit boycott.

In June, Facebook announced it will label posts that violate its community guidelines but are left up because they’re deemed newsworthy (and if their public interest value eclipses the harm they cause), but that doesn’t seem to happen very often. The audit revealed that over the last year, the company only applied the newsworthy exception to politicians 15 times, and only once in the United States, and it was not immediately clear what those instances were.

Meanwhile, the company still hasn’t taken any action against Trump’s past posts, and the auditors concluded that for many civil rights advocates, “the damage has already been done.” Even if Facebook has policies supporting civil rights, the auditors concluded, the refusal to enforce them against Trump has eroded trust in the company and leaves room for other politicians to follow in Trump’s footsteps.

2) Valuing free speech above all else creates problems
While Facebook’s leadership has repeatedly emphasized the company’s commitment to free expression, the auditors found that this comes at a cost. Facebook systematically chooses to prioritize the speech of politicians over clamping down on harmful and hateful rhetoric, which hurts its users overall. Several times in the report, the auditors cite Mark Zuckerberg’s 2019 speech at Georgetown as a “turning point,” where Facebook doubled down on its commitment to free expression as “a governing principle of the platform.”

Facebook’s choice not to fact-check politicians — and to allow them to sometimes break Facebook’s own rules against posting harmful content because what politicians’ say is inherently newsworthy — represents another problem. Both steps have significantly hurt the company’s civil rights efforts, the auditors said. Allowing politicians to spread misinformation about voting, which Mark Zuckerberg in his Georgetown speech argued was a form of free expression, particularly undermines Facebook’s commitment to its own values. The auditors said they found Facebook’s prioritization of free speech over other values, like non-discrimination and equality, “deeply troubling.”

By forming exemptions for politicians’ content, they argue, a “hierarchy of speech is created that privileges certain voices over less powerful voices.”

The report, however, acknowledges that Facebook is failing to address the tension between its civil rights promises and its monolithic commitment to free expression. Instead, the company should work to develop a more comprehensive understanding of free speech that acknowledges how typical users actually experience the platform.

“For a 21st century American corporation, and for Facebook, a social media company that has so much influence over our daily lives, the lack of clarity about the relationship between those two values is devastating,” lead auditor Laura W. Murphy wrote in the report’s introduction. “It will require hard balancing, but that kind of balancing of rights and interests has been part of the American dialogue since its founding and there is no reason that Facebook cannot harmonize those values, if it really wants to do so.”

3) Hate speech is still a problem for Facebook, and we don’t know how bad it really is
Facebook has long struggled with hateful and violent speech on its platform, including from white nationalists streaming talk shows on Facebook Watch and members of the “boogaloo movement” that promote anti-government ideology and has instigated violence at recent racial justice protests.

Facebook’s audit highlights that the company has a long way to go in combating hate speech, particularly around white nationalism. Despite improvements Facebook has made some progress: It says it’s gotten better at identifying hate speech, and it now has a team of 350 people who work exclusively on combating dangerous groups on Facebook. But the auditors say hateful content often stays on the platform for longer than it should or doesn’t get removed in the first place. This is an “especially acute” problem with content targeting African Americans, Jews, and Muslims, according to the audit.

For example, the auditors asked Facebook to ban all content that promotes white nationalist or white separatist ideology, something Facebook has so far failed to do. The company has explicitly banned phrases like “white nationalism” or “white separatism,” but that simplistic approach still allows racist content to continue to spread on the platform, the auditors said.

The audit also criticized Facebook for not taking down hateful events fast enough. The report highlights how in 2019, it took Facebook over 24 hours to remove an event intended to physically intimidate attendees at the Islamic Society of North America’s annual meeting in Houston, Texas. Facebook has acknowledged its misstep with that incident, but auditors called for the company to fundamentally revise its review process to expedite the removal of such events. Properly moderating events, the report says, is essential “to ensure that people cannot use Facebook to organize calls to arms to harm or intimidate specific groups” during the current nationwide protests.

One thing complicating Facebook’s hate speech problem is the fact that there’s not enough hard data to know how bad it is or how it impacts different groups. The report says “the absence of data for analysis and study seems to undercut efforts to document and define the problem, identify its source, and explore potential mitigation.”

While the audit focused on issues of hate speech, it also touched on a related and even more complex issue that has dogged Facebook for years: whether or not its platform politically polarizes its users and how this might be connected to the hate speech that spreads on Facebook. A recent Wall Street Journal report found that Facebook’s leadership shut down efforts to make the site less divisive by shelving internal research on whether social media increases polarization. Facebook, and Zuckerberg in particular, have denied these claims and criticized the Journal’s reporting.

Zuckerberg has vehemently disputed the notion that Facebook is polarizing its users, arguing that on the whole the platform brings people together. The auditors questioned that conclusion, saying they “do not believe that Facebook is sufficiently attuned to the depth of concern on the issue of polarization and the way that the algorithms used by Facebook inadvertently fuel extreme and polarizing content.”

Under public pressure after the 2016 election, Facebook adjusted its News Feed’s algorithm so that it promotes posts from friends and family over news articles. Still, the auditors believe this wasn’t sufficient action and that “Facebook should do everything in its power to prevent its tools and algorithms from driving people toward self-reinforcing echo chambers of extremism, and that the company must recognize that failure to do so can have dangerous (and life-threatening) real-world consequences.”

Facebook can do this, the auditors say, not just by removing hateful content but also redirecting users “away from (rather than toward) extremist organizations” in the types of recommendations it makes.

4) Covid-19 showed Facebook can effectively police harmful content when it wants to
The Covid-19 pandemic raised the stakes for how the company handles harmful content. Notably, in response to the pandemic, Facebook began to aggressively take down misinformation related to Covid-19, removing hundreds of thousands of false posts that Facebook identified as having the potential to cause imminent physical harm.

This new approach contrasts starkly with how the company combats other types of misinformation, which Facebook has historically chosen not to act on. The report says that “Facebook has no qualms about reining in speech by the proponents of the anti-vaccination movement, or limiting misinformation about COVID-19, but when it comes to voting, Facebook has been far too reluctant to adopt strong rules to limit misinformation and voter suppression.”

Moderating pandemic-related content is also getting more complicated for the platform: As Recode’s Peter Kafka explained in late May, the discussion around Covid-19 has evolved from a public health concern into a rancorous and partisan political debate that encompasses voting rights, state reopening plans, and the politics of wearing (or not wearing) masks. The report notes the majority of the 100,000 pieces of content between March and May taken down for violating its voter inference policies were related to Covid-19.

5) The person Facebook hires to be its new civil rights executive needs real decision-making power
For years, civil rights leaders have pressured Facebook to create a role that would ensure that the company is thinking about whether its products and policies are treating people fairly. With the publication of this report, Facebook announced that it is creating a senior vice president on civil rights leadership role. But auditors say that isn’t enough. They want Facebook to create a “civil rights infrastructure.”

The audit recommends that the new vice president of civil rights should manage a team rather than work in a standalone position; they should have a mandatory say in key “decisions with civil rights implications,” such as whether or not to remove controversial posts from a politician. The auditors specifically said that the new vice president of civil rights “must be ‘in the room’ (meaning in direct dialogue with decision-makers) when decisions are being made and have direct conversations with leadership.”

Fewer than 10 people weighed in on Zuckerberg’s controversial final decision not to take down Trump’s post referencing “shooting” at protests, according to a transcript of an internal Facebook all-hands meeting Recode reported on in June. Of the people Zuckerberg cited in the meeting, only one was Black, and none had roles dedicated exclusively to civil rights.

In a statement to Recode, Rashad Robertson, the president of Color of Change, said the newly announced position was “an important step” but added that “their office needs to be provided with full resources to be effective.”

“Without this, there is no reason to believe that Facebook will prioritize civil rights protections moving forward,” Robertson said. “All we can count on is Zuckerberg pontificating about free expression, while giving a free pass to politicians to lie, sow discord, and thrive off of hate and political chaos.”

What’s next
For civil rights leaders who have been waiting on the results of this report for two years, the big question is what comes next. Will Facebook enact the many changes in this audit it has said it’s “considering” or “piloting”?

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, in her blog post announcing the audit’s release on Wednesday, called it the “beginning of the journey — not the end” for Facebook’s handling of hate speech and related issues. But some civil rights organizations are losing patience, and according to the audit, some are considering stopping their work with Facebook altogether. This is an alarming sign, considering how close the November election is.

“I’m not looking only for what the audit recommends, but what Facebook is going to do about it,” Jessica Gonzáles, president of civil rights organization Free Press, which has been one of the organizations leading an advertising boycott of Facebook, told Recode.

“I know that we can’t snap our fingers and transform a social media network in a day, but [Facebook has] been way too lethargic about this”
Advertisers are continuing to sign on to the boycott, with around 125 new ones signing up so far this week alone, Gonzáles told Recode on Wednesday. Congress is also likely to press Facebook on these issues at an upcoming congressional hearing on antitrust issues in July, during which Zuckerberg and other major tech executives are set to testify.

“I know that we can’t snap our fingers and transform a social media network in a day, but [Facebook has] been way too lethargic about this,” said Gonzáles. “The actions don’t meet the words.”

US Politics / When Black Lives Matter Protests Come To “copland” by admin: 02:38 pm On 7 Jul 2020
The city of 125,000, about 40 miles from Los Angeles, is home to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. Donald Trump carried the area in 2016, just like Mitt Romney did in 2012 and John McCain in 2008. And it was here, in 1992, that a jury acquitted the police officers charged with beating Rodney King.

But on June 6, several thousand people gathered in Simi Valley to protest the police killings of George Floyd and other Black Americans. The protests were diverse, with people of “every race, every ethnicity, every age group,” including white people, Mikiiya Foster, an organizer of the protests, told Vox.

One older white woman, she said, came with a sign reading, “now you’ve pissed off Granny.”

Indeed, images from the protest tell what may be, for some, a surprising story: one of a majority-white, police-friendly city rising up against racist violence like never before.

Versions of that same story have been playing out time and again this summer, as people in small towns and in traditionally Republican strongholds turn out to protest in unprecedented numbers. And more so than in previous periods of uprising against racism and police violence, many of those protesting have been white, reflecting a larger shift in white public opinion toward skepticism of police and support for Black Lives Matter.

It’s not clear how enduring this support will be or how much policy change it will drive. As the months go by, some white people who have been supportive of the movement may “feel like they’ve done their part,” Ashley Jardina, a political science professor at Duke University and the author of the book White Identity Politics, told Vox. “Because racism doesn’t affect their day-to-day lives, it becomes salient and less important for them.”

Crime / Meet Hushpuppi's Lawyer, Gal Pissetzky Of Pissetzky & Berliner Law Firm by admin: 06:14 pm On 7 Jul 2020
N168 Billion Fraud: Hushpuppi hires top Chicago lawyer

Ramon Abbas, the Dubai-based Nigerian arrested last month for alleged Internet fraud, has secured the service of a top criminal defence attorney in Chicago.

Court documents seen by PREMIUM TIMES showed Mr Abbas on Monday retained Gal Pissetzky, a senior partner at Chicago law firm Pissetzky & Berliner, to help extricate him from multi-million dollar fraud charges levelled against him by American authorities.

Mr Abbas, an Instagram sensation widely known as Hushpuppi, was arrested alongside dozens of his alleged co-conspirators following an overnight raid of his apartments in Dubai on June 10. Emirati police and prosecutors said about N16 billion was found in cash out of an estimated N168 billion online scams linked to the syndicate.

Following initial tussle over his custody between Nigeria and the United States, Mr Abbas was ultimately handed over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) on July 2. He arrived in the U.S. on July 3 and made an initial court appearance in Chicago.

Although American prosecutors said Mr Abbas would still be transferred to Los Angeles “in the coming weeks”, he has decided to hire a top lawyer in Chicago to guide him through the process of transfer to Los Angeles.

Mr Pissetzky made the first appearance on behalf of Mr Abbas at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on July 6, documents showed.

Mr Pissetzky was called to the bar in 2002 and has practiced in Chicago since 2002. His firm’s website said he has been retained in high-profile cases and also widely recognised by major American media outlets as a legal consultant on serious criminal matters.

Already, court hearings have commenced for Mr Abbas to be removed from Chicago to Los Angeles where he was indicted on June 25 and a warrant issued for his arrest.

NOTIFICATION OF DOCKET ENTRY

Mr Abbas has successfully argued for an adjournment of his removal hearing from July 7 to July 13, according to court documents.

The removal process appeared to have made it difficult for Mr Abbas to enter a plea, several days after he arrived on American soil. His plea may not be taken and he may not be entitled to bail until his matter is transferred to Los Angeles for proper prosecution.

Mr Pissetzky would likely counsel Mr Abbas through the removal process in Chicago, but it was unclear whether or not he would follow the suspect to Los Angeles. The attorney was not available for comments when PREMIUM TIMES reached his office on Tuesday.
