Crime / A Woman Who Encouraged Her Boyfriend To Kill Himself Will Leave Jail Early by admin: 06:50 pm On 9 Sep 2019
A woman serving a 15-month sentence for her part in her boyfriend's death by suicide will leave jail weeks early even after her bid for parole was denied this week by Massachusetts officials, according to a sheriff's spokesman and a state record.
Michelle Carter has earned "good time" that will move up her release to March 13 from May 5, Bristol County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jonathan Darling told CNN Friday in a statement. Inmates can earn as many as 10 days monthly for working at the jail and attending educational and other programs, he said.

Meantime, Carter's appeal Thursday to be released after serving about half her sentence was denied by a two-member state parole board, according to a record of the decision provided by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security in Massachusetts.

"The (Board) is troubled that Ms. Carter not only encouraged Mr. Conrad (Roy III) to take his own life, she actively prevented others from intervening in his suicide. Ms. Carter's self-serving statements and behavior, leading up to and after his suicide, appear to be irrational and lacked sincerity," the board's decision states.
"Given subject's behavior in facilitating victim's death, release not compatible w(ith) best interest of society," one board member wrote. "Did not provide sufficient insight into reason for lack of empathy at time of crime and surrounding time period."
Carter's attorney, Joseph Cataldo, said the "board's decision is obviously premised on the incorrect and dangerous prior legal ruling."
Carter was found guilty in 2017 of involuntary manslaughter in the death three years earlier of Roy, who was 18 when he killed himself in his car. After his death, investigators discovered Roy had texted Carter as he contemplated and attempted suicide, and that she'd encouraged him to do it when he had doubts.

Carter appealed her conviction to the US Supreme Court in July, arguing her freedom of speech rights were violated.
"It's never in society's best interest to incarcerate for the content of their speech where there was not a specific statute that criminalizes such speech at the time it was made," Cataldo said Friday.

Entertainment / Suzanne Whang, 'house Hunters' Host, Dies At 56 by admin: 06:44 pm On 9 Sep 2019
Suzanne Whang, who viewers came to love as the voice and face of "House Hunters" for nearly a decade, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer, according to her agent.
She was 56.
"She was an amazing brilliant light and will be missed," her agent, Eddie Culbertson, told CNN on Friday. "We were together for over 20 years -- I know my life is better having known her."

Whang's partner, Jeff Vezain, posted about her passing on her Facebook page.
"On Tuesday evening around 7:20pm, Suzanne breathed her last breath here at home, as I knelt beside her and caressed her," he wrote. "For thirteen years she confronted cancer with courage, humor, determination and optimism."
The Arlington, v*rg*nia native was a graduate of Yale University, where she received a bachelors in psychology and also held a master's degree in cognitive psychology from Brown University.
She found her footing in the entertainment industry and hosted of HGTV's #1 show "House Hunters" from 1999 to 2007.
"Suzanne was warm, funny and kind with a distinctive voice that made everyone feel at home," the network said Friday in a statement to CNN. "Our HGTV family mourns her loss and wishes to express deepest condolences to her friends, fans and family who knew and loved her."
Whang worked consistently in Hollywood, co-hosting "TV's Censored Bloopers with d**k Clark" as well as "FOX After Breakfast" with Tom Bergeron.
As an actor, she portrayed Polly, the outrageous spa manager, on NBC's series "Las Vegas" for four seasons and had a reoccurring role as Carol Cheng, the wedding planner from hell, on the soap opera "General Hospital."
She also made appeareances on other television shows, including "Two and a Half Men," "Brothers and Sisters," "Cold Case," "Without a Trace," "Criminal Minds," "Boston Legal," "The Practice" and "NYPD Blue."
Most recently, Whang played a prison gang leader named Olive Garden on Season 4 of "Arrested Development" and in an upcoming episode of "Anger Management."
But it was her role as Divina in "From Here On Out" that Whang counted as one of the highlights of her 25 years of performing.
Whang wore many other hats, including a keynote speaker, metaphysical minister, published author, teacher and coach.
An award-winning standup comedian, she performed multiple summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where her controversial alter ego, Sung Hee Park, became a favorite on the comedy circuit. She was also a popular guest on the "Derek and Romaine Show" on Sirius XM OutQ.
Whang achieved a great deal while also battling cancer.
She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and in 2011 told she only had six months to live.
Whang dedicated herself to regaining her health and and lived cancer-free for seven years, until the disease returned in October 2018.
She wove her journey with cancer into comedy and stories, which she shared on stages around Los Angeles and beyond.

In a GoFundMe campaign she organized for herself last November, Whang posted a photo in which she put eyes and a mouth on a tumor on her sternum that she jokingly named "Felicia."
"Instead of graciously going away, Felicia (the sternum tumor) started growing by leaps and bounds, and I really thought I was on my way off the planet," Whang wrote in her posting. "But since I'm still here, I know that there must be more for me to learn and experience."

US Politics / Justice Department To Reveal Name Of Individual Accused Of Aiding 9/11 Hijackers by admin: 11:06 pm On 9 Sep 2019

The Justice Department will reveal the name of an individual believed to be connected to the Saudi government and accused of aiding two of the 9/11 hijackers, prosecutors said in a court filing Thursday.
The person's identity will remain a closely guarded secret for now, though it will be shared with attorneys representing the families of victims of the attacks who have alleged the government of Saudi Arabia helped to coordinate the terrorists in a lawsuit. the attorneys can then petition the Justice Department to release the name wider.
The move to disclose the name came a day after the 18th anniversary of the attack, which left nearly 3,000 men and women dead, and followed intense deliberation at the top of the Justice Department.

That the disclosure came under President Donald Trump is especially striking given the administration's efforts to maintain close relations with the powerful Arab ally, including by downplaying the kingdom's involvement in the recent murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Attorney General William Barr made the final decision, a Justice Department official said.
While the Saudis have continually denied any government involvement in the attacks, their role has been the subject of dispute in Washington.
Fifteen of the 19 al Qaeda terrorists who hijacked four planes on September 11, 2001, were Saudi nationals.
The 9/11 Commission established by Congress said in 2004 that it had found "no evidence that the Saudi government as an institution or senior Saudi officials individually funded" al Qaeda, although a number of commission members have since said, including in declarations that were submitted as part of the lawsuit, that the review did not include an exhaustive investigation of evidence of possible Saudi government involvement.
The name the Justice Department plans to release comes from a four-page summary from 2012 of an FBI investigation into three people who were said to help find living quarters and provide financial assistance, as well as assistance in obtaining flight lessons and driver's licenses, to two of the hijackers in Southern California in the period before the attack.
Two of the names are already known from a version of the document that is publicly available, though the third name has remained redacted. The two men, Fahad al-Thumairy and Omar Ahmed al-Bayoumi, have been connected to the Saudi government previously in government reports.
Attorneys for the families have argued that the unnamed individual is likely a more senior Saudi official and point to a portion of the document where the FBI said a person whose name is redacted "tasked" al-Thumairy and al-Bayoumi with "assisting the hijackers."
In a statement, the FBI said it decided to declassify and provide the attorneys with the name "in light of the extraordinary circumstances of this particular case."
An official added that the information in the report about the unnamed individual referred to an investigative theory pursued by the FBI at the time and not a statement of fact.
The decision to release the document to the plaintiffs in the suit was "coordinated at the highest levels of the Department of Justice," prosecutors wrote in a court filing last week.
If the Justice Department had claimed they could not release the document under the state secrets privilege, which allows the government to prevent the disclosure of sensitive information that might endanger national security, Barr himself would have had to submit an affidavit making the claim.
Families of the victims have been attempting to sue the country as far back as 2003, and in 2018, as part of their lawsuit, were allowed to proceed with discovery. That was only allowed after Congress passed a law in 2016 widening the ability for civil lawsuits to be filed against foreign countries accused of involvement in a terror attack.

The law was vetoed by President Barack Obama that year, who said it would expose US diplomats and servicemen to litigation in other countries, but Congress overrode the veto.
Attorneys representing family members of almost all of the 9/11 victims, as well as thousands of survivors, last year sent subpoenas to Saudi Arabia, as well as the FBI, CIA and State Department, and have been receiving hundreds of pages of documents on a rolling basis.

Weird News / Navy Seal Leaders Fired After Allegations Of s*xual Assault And Drinking by admin: 09:44 pm On 9 Sep 2019
The three senior leaders of a US Navy SEAL Team have been fired from their positions by the admiral overseeing the Navy's elite special operations forces "due to a loss of confidence that resulted from leadership failures," after members of their team were accused of serious discipline breaches, including an alleged s*xual assault and drinking while deployed to Iraq.
"Commander, Navy Special Warfare Command Read Adm. Collin Green relieved the three senior leaders of SEAL Team Seven from their positions Sept. 6.," US Navy Capt. Tamara Lawrence, a spokesperson for Naval Special Warfare Command, told CNN in a statement explaining the rare move.
"Green relieved the unit's commanding officer, Cdr. Edward Mason; executive officer, Lt. Cdr. Luke Im; and the team's top enlisted leader, Command Master Chief Hugh Spangler due to a loss of confidence that resulted from leadership failures that caused a breakdown of good order and discipline within two subordinate units while deployed to combat zones," Lawrence added.

While the team's leadership has been removed from their positions, they remain in the Navy and no additional punishments or disciplinary action has taken place at this time.
The Navy SEAL officers are not being accused of engaging in the alleged behavior that got the team sent home from Iraq, the Navy is holding them responsible for the behavior of their subordinates and the command climate they oversaw.
Navy officials said they could not recall a similar time when the leadership of a SEAL team was similarly fired from their positions.
A platoon from the SEAL team they led, SEAL Team 7, was sent home early from Iraq in July due to "a perceived deterioration of good order and discipline" that caused a military commander to lose "confidence in the team's ability to accomplish the mission."
US Defense Department officials familiar with the situation told CNN that the unusual step of sending the team home was due to allegations regarding an alleged s*xual assault and the consumption of alcohol during their downtime, which is a violation of general orders issued to troops participating in overseas campaigns.
In the wake of several high-profile scandals, including allegations of s*xual assault and cocaine, Green recently ordered a series of immediate changes to address what he calls a drift from "Navy core values of Honor Courage, and Commitment."

"Our Force has drifted from our Navy core values of Honor Courage, and Commitment and the tenets of our Naval Special Warfare Ethos due to a lack of action at all levels of Leadership," Green wrote in a memo to major subordinate commanders.
Green said that a "portion" of Navy SEALS is "ethically misaligned with our Culture," saying "the root of our problem begins with members who fail to correct this behavior within their sphere of leadership and prioritize this misalignment over the loyalty to Navy and Nation."

US Politics / 'i Love Tiffany': Donald Trump Defends Daughter After Madeleine Westerhout by admin: 07:14 pm On 9 Sep 2019
Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump on Saturday doubled down on defending his youngest daughter, Tiffany Trump, on the heels of his longtime personal assistant's ouster.
Madeleine Westerhout was pushed out of the White House for sharing intimate details about Trump's family with reporters, multiple people tell CNN. Sources familiar with the matter said Westerhout said disparaging things about Tiffany Trump during the off-the-record dinner with reporters and mentioned the President's youngest son, 13-year-old Barron. As Politico first reported, Westerhout referred to Tiffany's weight and that she should lose it before taking pictures with her father, according to one of the sources, and at one point said Trump loves Westerhout more than his own children.
Still, on Saturday, Trump called his former assistant "a very good person" while also reaffirming his love for his daughter in a tweet.

"While Madeleine Westerhout has a fully enforceable confidentiality agreement, she is a very good person and I don't think there would ever be reason to use it," Trump tweeted Saturday morning. "She called me yesterday to apologize, had a bad night. I fully understand and forgave her! I love Tiffany, doing great!" Trump made a similar comment to reporters Friday about his daughter as he departed for Camp David.
Westerhout was forced to resign as executive assistant to the President on Thursday after Trump learned she had shared information with reporters at a recent off-the-record meeting, during which she didn't say her comments were off the record, according to sources familiar with her departure. A reporter divulged details about the dinner to White House staff, the people said.

Some current and former officials questioned whether deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley, who invited Westerhout to the dinner, should have left her alone for 45 minutes to do a media appearance. Others say the onus is on Westerhout for making those comments and on the media for breaking off-the-record protocol. "Lots of blame to shoulder here," one source said.
A source close to Gidley said he bears no responsibility for what happened and that the responsibility falls solely on Westerhout and the media for breaking the ground rules in the exchange. CNN has reached out to Gidley for comment.

Questioned on Sunday about what the government would do if attempts in Parliament by the opposition were successful to prevent the UK exiting the European Union without a deal, Michael Gove told the BBC's Andrew Marr: "You're asking me about a pig in a poke and I will wait to see what legislation the opposition may try to bring forward.
"For me, the most important thing is to bear in mind actually, we already have legislation in place which an overwhelming majority of MPs voted for."

Gove, who is responsible for no-deal planning, was speaking ahead of what is set to be one of the most tumultuous weeks in British politics.
On Tuesday Parliament resumes after a summer recess, and the showdown begins against Boris Johnson's plan to suspend Parliament, a move opposition parties and Conservative Party rebels say limits opportunities for MPs to prevent a no-deal Brexit. Legal challenges are also expected to be heard in courts around the UK.
Johnson says lawmakers will have "ample time" to discuss Brexit before the October 31 deadline, which he has repeatedly pledged to stick to, "do or die."

Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer said Gove's stance was "breathtaking."
"For ministers not to confirm that this Government will accept and comply with legislation lawfully passed is breathtaking," the Labour Party politician tweeted.
"No Government is above the law."
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Johnson warned would-be Brexit rebels in his own party against joining opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn in his attempt to block a no deal.
"The fundamental choice is this: Are you going to side with Jeremy Corbyn and those who want to cancel the referendum?" he told the newspaper.

"Are you going to side with those who want to scrub the democratic verdict of the people -- and plunge this country into chaos?
"Or are you going to side with those of us who want to get on, deliver the mandate of the people and focus with absolute, laser-like precision on the domestic agenda?"
Elsewhere, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said Sunday he was "not optimistic" about avoiding a no-deal Brexit, as the bloc rejects the UK's demands to scrap the Irish backstop.
That part of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement would keep the UK closely aligned with the EU for an indefinite period in order to avoid a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Writing for the Sunday Telegraph, Barnier indicated that the offer presented by the EU on the Irish backstop represents "maximum flexibility," and if a solution were to be agreed it must be in accordance with the Withdrawal Agreement negotiated by former PM Theresa May.
"On the EU side, we had intense discussions with EU member states on the need to guarantee the integrity of the EU's single market, while keeping that border fully open," Barnier wrote.
"In this sense, the backstop is the maximum amount of flexibility that the EU can offer to a non-member state," he said.

Several thousand protesters gathered at demonstrations around the UK Saturday to protest Johnson's move to suspend Parliament.
Roughly 3,000 to 4,000 protesters gathered near Downing Street in London and demonstrations were held in other cities and towns around the country.

CNN's Laura Perez Maestro, Nic Robertson, Vasco Cotovio and Duarte Mendonca contributed to this report.

Sports / Arsenal Vs Tottenham Hotspur (2 - 2) On 1st September 2019 by admin: 07:08 pm On 9 Sep 2019

Another test for Arsenal.

Unai Emery is considering launching an £180million attack on Tottenham this weekend, with the Arsenal manager prepared to start Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe together.

Lacazette did not start against Liverpool last week because of a minor ankle complaint, though Emery experimented at 3-0 down by bringing him off the bench at Anfield.

Now, the Arsenal boss will make a late call on whether to start all three of his big guns when Tottenham visit for the north London derby on Sunday.

Pepe was signed for a club record £72m in the summer, joining an attack that already consisted of £56m Aubameyang and Lacazette, whose fee can rise to £52m.

Elsewhere, Mesut Ozil is back in full training and in contention to appear for the first time this season.

Speaking on Thursday, Emery said: 'They can start together and they can play also during the match as a three. It depends how we decide our game-plan.

'I am very optimistic for that situation. But be calm. For example, with Lacazette, he had a problem with his ankle. He's getting better and feeling better. It's very positive.

'With Pepe, he came here later than the others but he is getting and feeling better in each match. Aubameyang is very important for us.'

The deadline for the transfer window in Spain, Italy and France closes this Monday. On Ozil, who was linked with a loan move away, he added: 'We are not speaking about the possibility he could leave.

'This week he is training well. He is progressing physically. He is going to be closer for us and available for Sunday, I think.'

David Luiz was heavily criticised at Anfield last week. First, he gave away a cheap penalty by pulling on Mohamed Salah's shirt. The Liverpool forward then scored again after leaving the Brazilian for dead out wide.

Emery defended the £8m man from Chelsea as he said critics only focus on what he does wrong, rather than what he does well. 'It is not easy for him,' the Spaniard said.

'The adaption to us has been very quick, but I am very happy with him. His decision is very ambitious to come here and be with us, and he wants to help.

'We can speak about some fault with one player or another player, but we can also talk about some good decisions and very good actions in each match from one player. With him it's the same.'

World Politics / No Government Can Disobey Court Orders Without Connivance Of Attorney-general –f by wikirise: 10:51 am On 8 Aug 2019
Femi Falana (SAN), human rights lawyer, was a guest on Channels Television’s programme ‘Sunrise Daily’ on Tuesday where he spoke on judiciary, human rights and democracy. TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI who monitored the session brings the excerpts:

When people are suffering human rights abuses, some people say lawyers are actually at the roots of these sufferings? Is it a fair commentary?

That is very much true in the sense that the Federal Government and each of the 36 state governments have an Attorney- General who gives legal advice . The Attorney-Generals are regarded as the official Bar. For those of us out there who are private legal practitioners, we also play a role. Take for instance, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has 125 branches territorially across the country and it is in the constitution of the NBA that human rights and rule of law shall be defended. What has happened over the years is that we have a new human rights regime in our country, on paper that can be compared with that of any advanced democracy anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, the official bar and the private bar have not taken the issue of human rights and rule of law seriously. Take for instance, under the current political dispensation; no Nigerian shall be detained in any detention centres in Nigeria without a monthly inspection of the facility by a Chief Magistrates or a judge of a Federal High Court. In other words, you can no longer have indiscriminate arrests and detention. The constitution provides that anybody who is arrested by the police shall be taken to court within 24 or 48 hours but there are Nigerians who are languishing in police custody for months and years and Nigerians are not bothered. Take the Terrorism Act for instance; as draconian as the law is, it provides that before you arrest a Nigerian, you will go to a Federal High Court and obtain an order. If you want to search his house, you obtain an order like a search warrant. If you want to seize his phones, you get an order because your right to liberty, your right to the liberty of your home is constitutionally entrenched. So, if you want to violate any of those rights, you must obtain a court order. But what happens in Nigeria? You go and invade somebody’s house in the dead of the night. When you have kept him for few days, you suddenly realise that you need a court order and then you quickly rush to the court. No! That is not our law.

ALSO READ >> Okorocha Allegedly Accused Of Stealing N1Trn Imo State Money
But don’t you think the responsibilities should shift to the government as lawyers cannot do so much?

Lawyers can do so much and that is what we have been doing in Nigeria until recently.

You said the law is good on paper, are you saying it is not institutionalised?

You need the Bar to institutionalise it. For instance, I pleaded with the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Walter Onnoghen, I requested him that Section 34 of the Criminal Justice Act provides that Chief Judges shall designate Chief Magistrates to visit police stations. Before then, I had written a similar letter to Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Opeyemi Oke who just retired and without wasting time, she designated a magistrate. I also wrote a similar letter to Chief Judge of the FCT, Hon Justice Ishaq Bello also acceded to our request. Instead of writing to all the Chief Judges in the country, we now wrote to the Chief Justice of Nigeria and again without wasting time, a directive was given to all the Chief Judges of the states. All of them have designated a Chief Magistrate to visit the police stations. Apart from the Ikorodu Branch of the NBA led by Mr. Bayo Akinlade, no other branch of the bar ensures that the magistrates are accompanied to the police stations. I have a running battle with the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court. In spite of the directive of the CJN and chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC), the Federal High Court did not designate the judges to visit other detention facilities of the military, EFCC, ICPC and all of them. So today, we have not less than 150 people being detained by the Navy in various detention facilities: Calabar, Warri, Port Harcourt and Lagos. In fact, 10 of the detainees are being kept in a ship on Marina in Lagos Island for the past 13 months. 57 are in NNS Cell in Apapa. Now, if the judges of the Federal High Court have been designated and they have been visiting these detention facilities, you won’t have all these illegal detentions. That is why I said on paper, we are okay but in terms of actualising the rights of our people, we are not there.

ALSO READ >> Abike Dabiri Makes Important Visit To U.S
How much can these visits of these Chief Magistrates achieve if we don’t improve on the wheel of justice which grinds slowly?

Look at Omoyele Sowore for example. When a judge orders that he be kept for 45 days, we almost blew the roof that how can he do that? But I just laughed because there are other Nigerians who have been languishing in prisons for months and years. Now, when you now look at what is going on in our country, it is very simple and straightforward. It has nothing to do with the slow approach of our system. On a daily basis, the Police raid communities. On the roads, people are arrested and railroaded to detention centres of the Nigerian Police. On what ground? They say you are committing wandering or loitering whereas as far back as 1989, the law on wandering, the vagrancy law has been abolished. Yet on daily basis, people are still being arrested for wandering and sometimes, they are taken to court. You need the president of the Nigerian Bar Association that can walk to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and say ‘ Please, can we agree that this cannot happen in our country again? This is the law banning wandering, this is the law banning media parade of suspects in Nigeria’. If you must know the Anti-Torture act has banned media parade of suspects in Nigeria; keeping anyone in underground cells, keeping anybody incommunicado. Sometimes when I speak with senior police officers, they are not even aware of the provisions of these laws not to talk of the rank and file. What has happened is that the poor and indigent people in our country are at the receiving end of our law.

ALSO READ >> Buhari Must Be Firm In Handling National Issues – Nwokedi
Is there any way of stemming this tide?

The only way we can stem the tide is to be armed with the law and the laws are adequate. What we are doing now is to mobilise the human rights community, mobilise the Bar so that we can become the guardians of the human rights of our people particularly at the rural areas. I am very confident that we will get there.

What do you make of court orders given but are not honoured ?

That is where the Attorney-Generals come in because no government, be it colonial or indigenous, military or civilian will disobey a court order without the connivance of the Attorney- General. Because if a court order is given, what the government does is to ask the Attorney- General ‘ What do we do?’ If the Attorney-General says ‘Mr. President, we have to obey this order’, the order will be obeyed. But once the Attorney- General says ‘Sir, don’t worry, file an appeal, we will stay the execution of the judgment’. Of course, the governor or President will feel relaxed. That is why you are now told these days that national security supersedes or takes precedence over court order. National security is to be determined by the courts.

You bring out the files for the courts to determine whether the detention of somebody is in the interest of national security. I was involved in one of the cases. And what did the government say? Office of the Attorney- General said ‘My Lord, if we release this people, they may be attacked in town and that will lead to breach of the peace’. But the judge said ‘Don’t say that here. If you know somebody will be attacked, provide him with security but you can’t put somebody in prison and say for protective custody. Does he have Ebola which is an infectious disease?

Weird News / The Ultra-rich Are Illegally Buying Cheetahs As Pets by admin: 03:46 pm On 8 Aug 2019
Three tiny balls of fur huddle together for warmth inside a cardboard box. The baby cheetahs are just a few weeks old, but they've had a traumatic start to life.
A smuggler was attempting to spirit the cubs out of Somaliland, a breakaway state from Somalia, when he was caught red-handed by the authorities.
The cubs, who will soon be taken to a safehouse, are the lucky ones. Some 300 young cheetahs are trafficked out of Somaliland every year -- around the same number as the entire population of adult and adolescent cheetahs in unprotected areas in the Horn of Africa, according to the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF).

The trend is of "epidemic proportions," according to CCF, an organization devoted to saving cheetahs in the wild. At the current rates of trafficking, the cheetah population in the region could soon be wiped out.
"If you do the math, the math kind of shows that it's only going to be a matter of a couple of years [before] we are not going to have any cheetahs," said Laurie Marker, an American conservation biologist biologist and founder of CCF.
Somaliland is the main transit route for cheetah-trafficking in the Horn of Africa. The animals are smuggled across Somaliland's porous border, then stowed away in cramped crates or cardboard boxes on boats and sent across the Gulf of Aden towards their final destination: the Arabian Peninsula.
Two of 32 rescued cheetahs currently at CCF's safehouse in Hargeisa. The cats get fed fresh camel meat twice a day, with a sprinkling of "Predator Powder" to give them nutrients they would only get in the wild.

Status symbols for the rich
There are less than 7,500 cheetahs left in the wild, according to CCF. Another 1,000 cheetahs are being held captive in private hands in Gulf countries, CCF estimated, where many are bought and sold in illegal online sales.
While many of these states -- including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia -- ban the private ownership and sale of wild animals, enforcement is lax.
The overwhelming majority of these cheetahs end up in Gulf Arab mansions, where Africa's most endangered big cats are flaunted as status symbols of the ultra-rich and paraded around in social media posts, according to CCF and trafficking specialists.
In one such post, a video shows a "pet" cheetah watching a National Geographic show and becoming visibly agitated when it sees one of its own on the screen. "She's fixated on her family," reads the caption. Other posts show cheetahs laying on luxury cars, being shoved into pools, getting force-fed ice cream and lollipops, and being taunted by a group of men. One cheetah is seen getting declawed; another is dying on camera.
For cheetahs, a life in confinement can be deadly, if the journey doesn't kill them first. Many of the smuggled cubs arrive in the Gulf with mangled and broken legs after a rough journey. Three out of four cheetahs die during the trip, according to Marker.
As the world's fastest land mammal, cheetahs need space to run and a special diet. Most Gulf owners do not know how to care for the cats, and the majority of captive cheetahs die within a year or two, experts told CNN.
"Those people who have cheetahs as a pet are causing the species to go extinct," said Marker.
Veterinarians in Gulf countries confirm this grim picture. They spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
"(Cheetahs) do terribly in captivity," said one vet, who has treated dozens of pet cheetahs over the past five years. Many of those he cared for did not survive.
The vet said he has seen cheetahs suffer from metabolic and digestive disorders because people don't know what to feed them. He's also come across cheetahs with stress-related diseases and obesity due to confinement.
Captivity is "a dead-end for cheetahs," another vet said. The big cat is a delicate species, especially susceptible to feline and infectious diseases, the vet said.
In a statement to CNN, the UAE's Ministry of Climate Change and Environment denied there were cheetahs in the country's private houses and said that any cheetahs in the country were in "licensed facilities." The ministry also said it routinely tracks online advertisements for the sale of endangered species, removing 800 such sites so far.
But CNN has seen a number of Emirati social media posts featuring pet cheetahs in recent weeks, and veterinarians told CNN they've treated dozens of cheetahs in private captivity, though they said numbers have gone down over the last several years. One vet credited the rescues in Somaliland, tighter controls at the borders in one emirate, and more rigorous e-commerce policing for the drop.
Cheetahs for sale
A CCF study last year documented 1,367 cheetahs for sale on social media platforms between January 2012 and June 2018, largely from Arab Gulf states.
Most of those sales were conducted on Instagram and YouTube. While advertisements for those sales have been recorded in 15 countries, more than 90% of them originated in Gulf nations -- with 60% of those in Saudi Arabia.
The three top sellers of pet cheetahs globally are based in Saudi Arabia, according to CCF, and those Saudi sellers posted one fifth of all advertisements.
With a simple Google search, CNN found an online Saudi marketplace with cheetah listings, alongside car and mobile phone ads. A Riyadh-based cheetah seller was also advertising lions.
"Whatever cheetah you want, you request, we will import. You want male, you want female. It's not an issue," the Saudi dealer told CNN over the phone.

hree rescued cheetahs at CCF's safehouse. Around 300 cubs are smuggled out of Somaliland every year.
The seller boasted that he had brought more than 80 cheetahs into the kingdom. He told CNN he had just sold out, but that he could deliver a cheetah within 25 days.
"From Africa ... we import through a website with a guy, and we have another Saudi trader. He gets them for us. He buys them in cash and ships them to us immediately," he explained.
The seller spun a tale of the cheetahs being brought up in good conditions on farms. He recommended feeding them chicken, something that veterinarians say causes health problems.
He said cubs aged around two or three months were on offer, as were older cheetahs. Anything was possible, he said, for prices starting at 25,000 Saudi Riyals ($6,600). He said he does discounts orders of more than one cheetah.
Other sellers CNN found online were selling for more than $10,000 per cheetah.
The Saudi government did not respond to CNN's repeated requests for comment.
Illegal but lucrative
Trading cheetahs is prohibited under Appendix 1 of the Convention of International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES). Still, wildlife trade is a big business, and the seller CNN spoke with was likely part of a larger trafficking ring, according to law enforcement and trafficking experts.
Wildlife trafficking is estimated to be worth up to $20 billion per year, according to the UN and Interpol, and is among the top five illicit industries globally, along with drugs and human trafficking.
Illegal live animal trade used to predominantly take place on Facebook and Instagram, but Facebook has doubled down on finding abusers, says Crawford Allan, a wildlife trafficking expert with TRAFFIC at the World Wildlife Fund.
Facebook relies heavily on automated algorithms to detect prohibited content. They also have at least 5,000 manual reviewers, although the majority deal with other types of issues, such as terrorism and child abuse, rather than wildlife, according to Allan.
They are among a number of social media, tech and e-commerce companies joining the WWF's Coalition to End Wildlife Trafficking Online, pledging to reduce online trafficking by 80% by 2020.
"Our Community Standards do not allow for the sale of endangered species or their parts, and we remove this material as soon as we are aware of it," a Facebook company spokesperson said in a written statement. Facebook is the parent company of Instagram.
There has been some success taking down illegal ads for wildlife, with eBay removing 100,000 illegal wildlife ads over two years, according to Allan. But policing the practice is challenging, and criminals adapt to changing surveillance methods on the internet.
"There are enough places to hide on the open web," Allan said.

World Politics / Boris Johnson Asks Queen To Suspend Uk Parliament Boris Johnson Aahead Of Brexit by admin: 03:39 pm On 8 Aug 2019
The Queen has approved Prime Minister Boris Johnson's request to suspend Parliament just days after it returns from summer recess next week, and only weeks before the Brexit deadline.

Why this is happening: Johnson is seeking to suspend Parliament so his government can deliver a Queen's Speech on October 14, which lays out the government's agenda for the parliamentary session.

What it means for Brexit: The suspension of Parliament will shorten the amount of time Members of Parliament have to attempt to block a no-deal Brexit before the current deadline. Johnson has said Britain will leave the EU on October 31, with or without a deal.

Sports / Real Madrid Set To Loan Jovic To Ac Milan Just 2 Months After Signing Him by admin: 12:46 pm On 8 Aug 2019

Real Madrid summer signing Luka Jovic could leave the club this summer, just two months after completing a £62 million transfer.

Jovic swapped Germany for Spain earlier this summer by securing a big-money move to Real Madrid.

But he could be on his way out of the club with reports claiming Zinedine Zidane isn't convinced with the Serbian striker.

The Real Madrid manager has alerted clubs including AC Milan who are considering a loan bid for Jovic ahead of the new Serie A season, per Italian outlet Gazetta.

AC Milan have identified the 21-year-old as a target ahead of Italy's transfer deadline - September 2.

Jovic, though, has laughed off speculation regarding his Real Madrid future.

"[Zidane] believes in me and his story has not changed during this time as we work together," he told Novosti.

"I am learning from him day by day, which I am very pleased with, because he, as a player and as a coach, is at the very top of world football.

"[The media] always make me laugh. [They] will always deal with such stories [about me leaving Real Madrid]. I have been used to all kinds of comments since the beginning of my senior career, I have come to terms with the fact that there can always be those comments. Time will tell what is true.

"I'm ready to give the maximum and offer everything I can. I don't even expect to play all of the games right away. However, through work and effort, I will reach my goal. I am pleased with the way the [club] have accepted me, I wish I could have scored at the start, but I am in no hurry. I know my [time] will come.

"It takes time to adjust to the club, the players, the style of play itself. I prefer to constantly contribute to my team and grow with it than to shine in a few games without me being anywhere. Each of us is different, adapting in different ways."

Jovic enjoyed a prolific campaign last season as he bagged 25 goals in all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt.

South-East Governors To Nnamdi Kanu 'Attack Us And Be Deported Back To Nigeria'

By Happiness Chukwuebuka - August 21, 2019

State governors from the South-East region has dared Nnamdi Kanu, leader of Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) to made good his threat and see if he will not be deported back to the country.

Mr Kanu, who heads the secessionist group demanding the restoration of the defunct Biafra Republic, threatened to unleash mayhem on political leaders from the Igbo predominantly area.

The leader of the proscribed group made the threat while claiming his group was responsible for the attack on Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy Senate President, at the weekend in Germany.

Describing the warning as an empty threat, David Umahi, Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, dared Mr Kanu to attack any of the political leaders from the zone and see if he will not be forcefully repatriated back to the country to face his trail on treasonable felony.

“South-east governors are saddened with the ugly display and dance of shame by IPOB in Germany in attacking one of the finest leaders of Ndigbo, Senator Ike Ekweremadu. We totally condemn it as we weep for them as they never knew the implication of their Unclad dance in public,” the Ebonyi governor said in a statement he signed on Tuesday.

“We have also noted the empty threats by Mr Nnamdi Kanu (a former ordinary Member of MASSOB) to attack Governors of South-east, Ohanaeze leadership and other Igbo politicians for not supporting the self-acclaimed supreme leader in his self-fight for the raw power and wealth while pretending to be fighting for Ndigbo.

“We wish to warn that should any Southeast person be attacked anywhere in the world, we shall, by all means, bring back Kanu to Nigeria to face the wrath of our people. It is madness for anyone who wants raw power with no experience to think that we Governors will support the killing of our people giving out our scarce land to herdsmen.

“If Kanu is serious, let him direct IPOB to fight those foreign killer herdsmen in their countries of origin since he claims the IPOB is in over 100 countries in the world.

“If Kanu who was previously in MASSOB but needed power and money wants Biafra and he is the self-acclaimed supreme leader, let him come back home with his army and guns to lead us to battle for the empire he desire to lead other than cheap talks. Soonest Ndigbo will know him better,” the statement concluded.

Postsmania General / Canada Is ‘stealing’ Our Young People! by admin: 12:42 pm On 8 Aug 2019

Yes, Canada is not just taking our young people, they are taking the fattest of our crops, the best, the brightest, and the brainiest!

One of them is my friend, Olufemi, (not real name). He graduated top of his class and best in the entire university! Nine years after graduation, he got married to his equally cerebral lawyer wife, and they both had fairly paying jobs that admitted them into the struggling middle class in Nigeria. A year after marriage, Olufemi, disillusioned by the state of his family’s finances, the situation in the country and the underutilisation of his skills, and intellect at his place of work, sold all his assets and relocated his young family to Canada!

Femi’s story is not unique, almost every young Nigerian professional who is not in the process of immigrating to Canada, knows a friend, family or colleague who has relocated or is in the process of relocating. The situation is alarming, almost like the biblical “rapture”: you come to work one day, you see your colleagues, you resume the next day, and they are gone!

I recently had a conversation with a millennial working in one of the big four audit firms; the conversation bordered on the number of young professionals leaving the country for Canada. He informed me that their firm had started a WhatsApp group for ex-staff members that had immigrated to Canada; as of the time of having that discussion about 70 Nigerian immigrants had joined the group. A similar conversation with another tax consultant also working in one of the “big four” revealed the same trend. According to him, almost all his colleagues in their audit department had immigrated to Canada or some part of Europe!

Why Canada, you may ask? Well, Canada has an immigration process carefully designed to attract highly skilled young professionals. It requires you to be of a certain age bracket (the younger you are, the more points you gain) to take a “Test of English”, send your academic transcripts, have certain amount in your bank account and Voila! you get a Canadian Permanent Residence.

The process, while seamless, is expensive for the average Nigerian, and is also a clear indication of the class of people they want: comfortable, highly educated, extremely skilled, young professionals, hence the people who go through this process are not poor by Nigerian standard.

As a young professional in this country, you begin to wonder if there is something wrong with you if you have not commenced your own immigration process. When you see your friends and colleagues resign from their jobs, sell their property, and leave the country; when you watch them upload pictures of their new countries of residence on social media and ‘brag’ about how the system works; when they inform you gleefully of how they have “secured” the future of their children, and invite you to join them, you wonder if, perhaps, you are not missing out on life opportunities for your own children!

Sir, the young people leaving the country are not unpatriotic, the reality is that Nigeria has not been kind to her youths! Furthermore, this brain drain did not start with young people nor did it start in this generation. When political and religious leaders send their children outside the country to be educated or when they seek heath care outside the shores of their country, they send a clear and uncontroverted message to our young people that they do not believe in the future of their country! Young people are therefore simply taking a cue from her leaders, yet, this mass immigration in recent times is nothing like what happened in the past: it is massive, and it is alarming! Young bright people immigrating to a foreign land is the most telling evidence of a failed leadership!

What state of affairs of a country would make its young people leave e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.ng: family, friends, some measure of certainty and in some cases extremely good jobs for a foreign country, full of uncertainties and oftentimes for less than inspiring jobs?

The current state! The reality is that the state of affairs of this country is extremely discouraging for young people! Our country is ridden with nepotism, insecurity, poor infrastructure, unemployment and a lot more, underemployment! What is more discouraging, and frightening is that nothing in the present seems to indicate that things will get better in the future!

Our health care system needs a complete overhaul, medical “facilities” are in dire state of disrepair. The doctor to patient ratio in public hospitals is shockingly poor, yet our doctors and health personnel continue to emigrate the country, because they are overworked, overwhelmed and underpaid!

A close friend and her younger sister were recently threatened with deportation, as she had remained in the United Kingdom, after her student visa expired. Her British friends started a petition online in a bid to keep her and her sister in the UK. There is a back story to all of this drama: my friend had lost two of her siblings who had medical conditions, mainly as a result of the poor health care system in the country and has a younger sister with the same medical condition who may have faced a similar fate, were it not for the excellent and timely treatment she had received in the UK. Unfortunately, her younger sister requires continuous health care which is simply not available in our country.

My friend, a brilliant lawyer and patriotic Nigeria, is compelled to appeal to the British Government to offer a right to remain, because her younger sister’s life quite literally depends on it!

Why do we subject our young people to this kind of humiliation? Why do we have to beg to remain in a foreign land? How does a developing nation recover from such massive evacuation of its human capital? And more importantly, how do we address this issue to reignite a sense of patriotism amongst our young people?

Quite frankly, I do not have the answers to all these questions.

I hear that there is a common joke in Toronto, that the best place to have a heart attack is in a taxi, because the driver is probably an immigrant doctor. The young people leaving are some of the smartest and the brightest, they know that adapting to a new society is hard, yet they still go! Many of them are skilled professionals, lawyers, doctors, architects, pharmacists, they know that they must write and pass expensive professional exams, yet, they still go! They hear about racism, about the cold, the lonely nights and outright discrimination, yet, they still go! The frustration and disappointment amongst young people are real and palpable, but, they believe the country has little to offer so they leave.

We must address this issue with the urgency it deserves, because at the end of the day, Nigeria is the only country we can truly call home! It is for this reason that many Nigerians in the Diaspora still choose to come back home! They still build property, start businesses and make investments in the country. They still give their children African names and follow the local news closely; many are even more abreast and passionate about the happenings in the country than those of us in the country. They are never truly gone; one “leg” in, the other out! and how can they, their parents, friends, colleagues and relatives are still here!

Canada’s gain is Nigeria’s loss. It is impossible to stop this trend completely, sadly, but we can discourage it by creating a more enabling environment for everyone. We would need to do this gradually, perhaps, we can start with our health care, with improved power and security of lives and property!

More importantly, young people need to sense a clear redirection in the affairs of the country; when this is done, maybe, they will remain in the country. But first, we must start! The sooner we begin, the better.

World Politics / Revolution Now: 60 Arrested In Cross River, Lagos, Others — Sowore’s Lawyer by admin: 12:34 pm On 8 Aug 2019

A human rights lawyer, Mr Inibehe Effiong, has said no fewer than 60 protesters may have been arrested by the police in the states where the #RevolutionNow protest took place on Monday.

Effiong, who is also the National Legal Adviser of the African Action Congress, lamented that the clampdown on the protesters was an ominous sign of greater danger to come, adding that Nigeria was no longer practising democracy.

He said, “In Ogun State alone, we learnt that about 20 protesters were arrested, while nine were arrested in Lagos. In Cross Rivers, Ondo, Kwara, Nigerians were also arrested for demanding their rights.

“The militarisation is unwarranted. There is no need for this primitive deployment of state power to quell an ordinary civic response to the situation in the country. The government, the police and the army did not need to do this.

“Even the manner they went about it clearly shows that Nigeria is not a democratic country. When you have soldiers and policemen being heavily mobilised with armoured personnel carriers, AK-47 and other assault rifles; and they are opening bullets on people, using tear gas and arresting protesters who were just singing.

“Look at the Lagos protest for example. We were not even disrupting traffic flow. We were just at one spot when those people swoop on us. For me, I find it troubling and it is an ominous sign of the danger the country is facing. It also shows the deterioration of democratic values. It is a way of telling the international community that Nigeria is back to the dark era of censorship, intolerance and totalitarianism.

FFK Reacts To Sowore’s Arrest: "He's Not My Friend, He Defamed Me, But..." by GistMore12: 4:12pm On Aug 05
You Are A Coward For Arresting And Detaining Omoyele Sowore - FFK Slams Buhari

Femi Fani-Kayode, the former Minister of Aviation, has described President Buhari as a ''coward and a timid leader'' over the decision of the Federal government to arrest and detain Sahara Reporters publisher and ex-presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore was picked up from his Lagos home on Saturday August 3rd by men of the Depratment of State Security DSS. He was acccused of championing a revolution which the Federal government sees to be a threat to national security. Sowore and his group planned for a protest tagged #Revolutionnow today August 5th.

FFK in a piece shared on his verified page, said Sowore is not his friend and can never be his friend but he will however not sit back and watch him being humilated by the government. According to FFK, Sowore has used his platform to slander, libel, villify and defame him and his family.

Read his piece below

OMOYELE SOWORE AND THE EMISSARY OF SATAN

Every Nigerian has the legitimate and constitutional right to protest and demonstrate peacefully in a democracy. It is NOT an act of treason to march against the President and to protest about the insecurity in the country.

The publisher of Saharareporters and a presidential candidate in the just- concluded presidential elections, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, expressed his desire to demonstrate peacefully against you (President Muhammadu Buhari) and your Government.

He chose to call his protest a "revolution" in order to emphasise his zeal and the importance of the event.

He has no arms, he has not threatened to conduct an armed struggle or engage in an armed insurrection or to kill anyone so this can only be a "revolution" in name and by words.

Yet you are such a COWARD, you are so timid and you are so fearful of your own shadow that you storm his home in the middle of the night, arrest him and threaten to charge him and his suppprters with treason if the demonstration holds.

Meanwhile various murderous northern supremacist and hardline Fulani extreemist groups, all armed and "fully loaded", have stated their intention to kill every southerner in the north unless and until RUGA is accepted and implemented in the south.

They are filled with hate, they have arms, they are racists, they are ethnic supremacists, they have a publicly-stated murderous intent and they have already killed many in the south, the Middle Belt and even in the north itself yet you did not see fit to arrsst even ONE of them or declare them as terrorists.

It is those that do not kill, that do not have arms and that do not threaten to kill that you threaten with treason, detain, jail, kill and call terrorists like IPOB, IMN, the civil rights groups and activists and members of the official opposition.

I am constrained to ask you, why are you such a coward? Why do you always target those that cannot fight back, that do not kill, that do not threaten the peace and that do not carry arms?

The only thing they have are their words, their feet, their hands, their pen and the courage of their convictions yet you are so intimidated by them and so frightened of them simply because you cannot bear to be exposed for what you are.

You silenced and clamped down on the official opposition, on IPOB, on IMN and on all the civil rights groups but you bow and tremble before the Fulani herdsmen and covertly protect and support them whilst you pamper Boko Haram, secretly empower them and fight against them with kid gloves.

You do not even honor our gallant soldiers that fought Boko Haram in battle but instead you bury them like stray dogs in unmarked mass graves after they are killed on the frontline!

Meanwhile your military commanders are openly telling Boko Haram fighters that if they put down their arms they can end up being President of Nigeria! That is the pitiful level thst you have dragged your nation and the Nigerian military to.

I must ask you: why this glaring double standard? Why are you such a bully and why are you so hell bent on dividing and destroying Nigeria?

I guess that you have already achieved that objective because I doubt that our country can ever be the same again but yet you are still not satisfied. You want to do more!

You want even more turmoil, strife, division, violence, mayhem, confusion, slaughter, carnage and conflict and you are trying desperately to provoke a violent reaction from your targetted victims and those that you secretly hate and despise.

This surely is the work of the devil and you sir are satan's demonically-annointed and satanically-inspired emissary.

I warned the country about you before and during the presidential election in 2015 but they would not listen.

People like President Olusegun Obasanjo, General Ibrahim Babangida, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Chief Ernest Shonekan, Professor Wole Soyinka, Sheik Ibrahim El Zak Zaky, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senator Bukola Saraki, Mrs. Oby Ezekwezile, Mr. Femi Falana SAN, Chief Dele Momodu and many others supported you then but I, by divine insight and prophetic perception, saw through you, knew what you stood for, knew what you planned to do and knew what you represented.

So did my friends and brothers Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Governor Ayo Fayose, Lt. Colonel Abubakar 'Dangiwa' Umar (rtd), Pastor Bosun Emmanuel and a few of our fathers in the Lord like Bishop David Oyedepo, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, Prophet T.B. Joshua and a number of others.

Even the leadership of the PDP at the time and top members of President Goodluck Jonathan's administration, with the possible exception of Prince Deji Adeyanju and Pastor Reno Omokri, did not see you for the great evil that you are at that time but now they all do.

The bad news is that you are going to plunge Nigeria into a major crisis and conflict and a terrible, protracted and bitter civil war which most do not see coming and which no-one wants or prays for but which will come if you do not change your ways or if you are not stopped.

This is very sad. It is a great tragedy yet that is precisely what you secretly crave for and want. Bloodshed, the suffering of others and turmoil brings you and your supporters pleasure and joy but permit me to tell you this: warmongers, bloodthirsty and blood-lusting sadists and evil men never end well.

This matter and this story will not end the way you want or expect it to. Your power is not divine: it is temporal and temporary. Others have come and gone before you and you will go in the same way as them: in God's way and in God's time.

We are not violent and lawless revolutionaries or irresponsible and reckless anarchists and neither do we believe in doing anything outside the constitution or the law. We are committed democrats and great believers in the rule of law, the constitution and the democratic process.

We are also believers in the power and efficacy of the Lord of Hosts, the Alpha and the Omega and the Ancient of Days and we know that sooner or later, no matter how long it takes, He will honor His word and make all things beautiful in our country.

In the end the forces of light and the children of God will prevail against your great wickedness, unconsciable malevolence and evil plan to destroy Nigeria and throw our people into a cauldron of raging fire.

You can lock us all up and torment us for as long as you want. In the end you shall fail, you shall fall and you shall be ashamed and God's counsel alone shall stand.

Those of us that oppose you from the heart, spirit and soul have lost all sense of fear. We will stand against you until the end of time. We will sacrifice all, including our very lives, if that is what is required for us to break our chains of servitude and slavery and win our freedom.

Our message to you is simple and clear: do your worse because we expect no less. God gives and God takes, blessed be the name of the Lord.

Permit me to conclude this contribution with the following.

It was brought to my attention that my friend and brother Governor Nyesome Wike of Rivers state condemned the planned demonstration and put the security agencies on full alert to arrest anyone that dared to come out to protest in his state.

With the greatest respect to my brother I believe this was wrong and that it was a mistake. He and I both know that Sowore does not have the intention or the capacity to effect a violent revolution and that the planned protest would only have been a revolution in name.

It would have been a harmless exercise, with relatively small numbers and an opportunity for the acivists that often collaborate with Sowore to come out and express themselves.

It would have begun and ended there wthout much drama and rather like the harmless protests about the Chibok girls at Unity Fountain in Abuja. There is not a hope in hell that it would have turned into a violent attempt to overthrow the Government and, as far as I am aware, neither was that ever the intention.

I suspect that the reason Wike has taken the position that he has taken and the reason that so many other leading figures in the official opposition PDP has taken a queue from him and distanced themselves from the protest is because of their personal dislike and disdain for Sowore who really has very few friends in the political class or in the ranks of the official opposition party.

Yet I believe that those that have fallen into the trap of not standing by Sowore or speaking up for him when they know that he is being treated unjustly, his rights are being violated and he is suffering persecution are being shortsighted and naive.

In a time of crisis and especially when we are contending with a dangerous and merciless despot we all need each other regardless of how we feel about one another or whatever contentious issues, conflicts, disagreements and fights we may have had in the past. That is common sense!

In a time of war my enemie's enemy, out of expediency, necessity and good old-fashioned pragmatism, automatically becomes my friend.

Failing to grasp that point and holding on to it could prove to be fatal to our collective cause and objective. No man can take on Government on his own: we all need each other.

Permit me to go further. If anyone should have an axe to grind with Omoyele Sowore that person is me.

He has never been my friend, I have never met him and I have never liked him.

He has offended me on many ocassions and he has also offended many of my closest friends, political associates, family members and relatives.

Worse still his website, Saharareporters, which has a massive reach all over the world, has slandered, libelled, villified and defamed me and mine more than any other media outlet in the world and has consistently done so since 2005!

There is no love lost between us but that does not mean that I will remain silent, sit back and gloat when his rights are being violated or when he is suffering persecution from a Government that can, at best, be described as paranoid, vicious, cruel, desperate, mendacious, relentless and dangerous and, at worse, genocidal, murderous and evil.

When I was detained in a specially built Boko Haram terrorist facility (which only had Boko Haram suspects and convicts in it) at Kuje prison in 2016 and my life was purposely put in danger Sowore, his Saharareporters and some of his colleagues and activist friends made mockery of me.

I was reliably informed that some of them were hoping and praying that I would be killed or maimed by the terrorists whilst I was there. I have little doubt that that was Buhari's intention and desire as well and it would have surely come to pass had the Lord not been with me.

Yet I will not repay Sowore in the same coin. Only fools mock others when they are going through hard times, challenges, difficulties and travails and this is especially so when they are going through those travails and hard times for a noble and worthy cause.

It is enough vindication that the same people that he was once in bed with, that he once collaborated with, that he helped bring to power and that he once wined and dined with are now humiliating, demonising and terrorising him too.

The same people that have continously insulted, persecuted, villified, demonised and denigrated me and mine for the last four years are now persecuting him as well.

To hear about him being roughed up, dragged out of his home, arrested in the middle of the night and detained by the DSS and to hear that there is a possibility that he may be faced with a charge of treason or treasonable felony for doing no wrong does not give me joy.

Instead it saddens me and confirms my greatest fear that the Buhari administration has lost its marbles, gone totally insane and is capable of doing absolutely anything to those that it perceives and it regards as being its critics, its adversaries and its enemies.

It is Sowore today but it could be anyone else tomorrow. And neither do you have to break the law or do anything wrong before they come for you.

As one of my tormentors and jailers eagerly and gladly told me when I was in detention for three months in 2016, he said,

"We know you have done nothing wrong but we can keep you here for as long as we like and charge you to court for breathing air if we choose. Whatever it is you will spend the next few years trying to clear your name even though you have done nothing wrong".

He concluded by saying,

"We are here to torment you and that is what we are going to do. In case you make it out of here alive and you are still whole, if you like keep criticising and abusing Buhari: we will bring you back and teach you the lesson of your life!"

That is the deplorable and degenerate mindset of our collective oppressors and that is why it is important for us all to stand up and speak up for one another in trying times, whether we like each other or not.

There is nothing illegal in conducting a peaceful protest, even if you choose to call it a revolution for the purposes of theater and drama. You don't plan a revolution and an armed insurrection and sleep in your home!

As long as it is only a demonstration and nothing more there is absolutely no reason why the Buhari Government should behave like the bunch of cowardly, paranoid, lily-livered and vicious Nazis that we know them to be.

By arresting and detaining him they have only made Sowore more relevant and more popular.

If that were not the case I would not be moved and honored to lend my humble voice to his cause and to join millions of others from all over the world to call for his immediate release.

He is not my friend and I do not like him yet on this matter I stand shoulder to shoulder with him.

May God guide and protect him and may he be returned to the land of the living at the soonest.
