If Washington politics were a movie, this week might be the time you turn to your companion and say, "Who writes this stuff?":
A President and "world-class deal maker," marveled Frida Ghitis, who demonstrates with a "temper tantrum," that he can't make deals. Who storms out of meetings with congressional leaders while insisting he's calm (and lines up his top aides to confirm it for the cameras). Who says, "I don't do cover-ups," with his administration on information lockdown -- offering justifications "that wouldn't pass muster in an episode of 'The Simpsons,'" remarked Julian Zelizer.
And who launches into a tirade -- in the middle of an event about aid to farmers -- to say I'm not crazy, she's crazy.
"She" being House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who offered Trump her thoughts and prayers, and wished aloud that someone would get him an intervention. There was no need, I'm an "extremely stable genius," Trump told reporters, adding that he'll talk to Democrats when they stop investigating him. He's right, suggested Marc Thiessen in the Washington Post: "Nancy Pelosi can't accuse him of engaging in a coverup in the morning and expect him to negotiate with her on a $2 trillion infrastructure package in the afternoon."

By week's end, Trump and supporters were previewing what critics believed his re-election campaign would look like. He retweeted a Fox News video mashup manipulated to falsely make Pelosi appear to slur her speech. "It's pathetic," protested SE Cupp, adding "childish" and "impotent." "But it's disgusting and disturbing to watch the president and leader of the free world do it time and time again."

The war of words began Wednesday, said Ghitis. Trump was "hurt because earlier in the day, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, 'We believe the President of the United States is engaged in a cover-up.'"
Nia-Malika Henderson explained: "In Pelosi, Trump has something he has never had. A person -- a woman, at that -- who challenges, frustrates and frequently doles out plenty of strategic shade." Pelosi "reminds him that his power isn't limitless. With every briefing and White House meeting, she flexes her own considerable power."
But not toward impeachment, complained Zelizer --and that's a big mistake. Pelosi and her allies are trying to protect "their partisan prospects in 2020" rather than ensure that "our constitutional checks and balances are working to restrain Trump right now," he said.

It took Facebook more than a day to downgrade a doctored video making House Speaker Nancy Pelosi look like she was slurring her words -- and the video itself remains on the site, with copycats proliferating.
A group called Politics WatchDog posted the manipulated video of Pelosi -- which was slowed down to give the misimpression she was speaking in an impaired fashion at a think-tank event -- at 1:29 p.m. Eastern time on May 22.
But it wasn't until after 9 p.m. on May 23, some 32 hours later, that Facebook began suppressing the video after a fact-check from one Facebook partner, LeadStories, was published. Facebook partner Politifact didn't post its own fact-check until the following morning on May 24.
One reason for the delay: The fact-checkers had to do their own reporting -- finding audio and digital forensics experts who could verify that the video had been manipulated.

The flap over the Pelosi video reveals the limits of Facebook's third-party fact-checking system in the battle against misinformation heading into the 2020 election cycle -- and as the company faces increasing scrutiny in Washington, including calls for it to be broken up from Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren and others.
The social media giant has taken a hands-off approach to policing the veracity of content on the site, instead partnering with independent organizations that have become the company's first and main line of defense against misinformation.
But fact-checking a post or video takes precious time, during which rumors and misinformation can continue to spread at internet speeds.
Facebook works only with fact-checkers that are part of the International Fact-Checking Network, a global coalition of vetted fact-checkers founded by the Poynter Institute, a leading journalism think tank based in Florida. Other members of the network include The Washington Post's fact-checking arm, as well as the Associated Press and Factcheck.org, IFCN director Baybars Orsek said in an interview.
When one of Facebook's fact-checking partners rates a post or video as false on the platform, it automatically triggers a change in how Facebook's algorithm handles that content, Facebook, as well as Politifact and LeadStories confirmed to CNN on Friday. Demoting a piece of content means it will appear less frequently in users' news feeds. It also notifies Facebook users who share or have shared that content that it is false, said Facebook in a statement.


"Once we publish [a fact-check], right away I go into the Facebook tool and I match the fact-check with the offending post," Katie Sanders, managing editor of Politifact, told CNN. "The way it's supposed to work is it's supposed to de-amplify the reach of the post."
Yet the altered Pelosi video remains available on Facebook, the company said, because it does not violate the platform's community standards. There is no rule on Facebook saying content posted there must be true or accurate.
The video now appears with a message to users indicating the post has been flagged and directing them to multiple fact-checks.
On Friday, Facebook defended its handling of the video to CNN's Anderson Cooper.
"I think the suggestion there is that we haven't taken action, and that's not right," said Monika Bickert, vice president for product policy and counterterrorism. "We have acted ... anybody who is seeing this video in News Feed, anyone who is going to share it with somebody else, anybody who has shared it in the past — they are being alerted that this video is false."
Bickert added that the company's partnership with fact-checkers strikes a critical balance for Facebook users, one that preserves their ability to make "informed choices about what to believe."
But some critics said Facebook must be more proactive about fighting misinformation, and that delegating to fact-checkers barely qualifies as taking action.
"Bickert doubles down on AC360 over and over about how Facebook 'took action,'" said Jason Kint, CEO of Digital Content Next, an association representing digital publishers. "[But] taking action doesn't mean 'half a day later due to automated technology receiving information from third parties.'"

As the doctored video rocketed across social media, tech platforms also had to grapple with copycats who were repackaging and creating new, unique uploads of the same video. LeadStories counted as many as 17 distinct copies across Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
Google quickly moved to eliminate the video from YouTube, and Twitter has continued to say it has nothing to share on the matter. Facebook said that when a post is flagged for demotion by a fact-checker, the company applies the same treatment to copycat posts.
"Speed is critical to this system," the company said on Friday, "and we continue to improve our response."
But Facebook's approach is still constrained by its decision to have outside groups manually verifying content of questionable veracity, even as the amount of fake content is expected to grow.
Policymakers say the rudimentary changes to the original Pelosi clip foreshadow how damaging advances in content manipulation technology could become to democratic discourse.
"It has been clear for some time that the large platforms do not have clear policies or procedures in place to address viral misinformation like this," v*rg*nia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner, a frequent critic of Silicon Valley, told CNN on Friday. "Viral misinformation is pushed today by simple Photoshop and video editing techniques, but new technologies are going to make this a heck of a lot worse."

He added: "We have a serious problem on our hands, with technologists developing and releasing tools that will have profoundly destabilizing effects."
Hawaii Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz was more blunt in a Twitter message Friday: "Facebook is very responsive to my office when I want to talk about federal legislation and suddenly get marbles in their mouths when we ask them about dealing with a fake video. It's not that they cannot solve this; it's that they refuse to do what is necessary."

It had been more than two weeks that she had been lost in a thick Hawaiian forest, and Amanda Eller was at an end.
The 35-year-old doctor of physical therapy was at a place where she could no longer go forward because of the terrain. With a fractured leg and no shoes, she sure wasn't going to go back.
The area she found herself in had little to no food. She stayed there for a day and a half and, as Eller's mother and a friend told reporters Saturday as they detailed the rescued woman's ordeal, she began to resign herself to the dire possibility that she might die there.
"It came down to life and death -- and I had to choose. I chose life. I wasn't going to take the easy way out. Even though that meant more suffering in me for myself," Eller told CNN affiliate KHON.

She tried to keep her spirits up. She had conquered so much to get to this point.
She picked berries and guava to eat when she could find them. She drank water only when it was clear enough and looked like it wouldn't make her sicker. She took care of a bum knee and nursed sunburn so bad it got infected. She walked without her shoes, which had been swept away in a flash flood when she was trying to dry them out.
She listened for the helicopters. They had come before, several times and she had waved as best she could, but they flew away.
On Friday, Javier Cantellops, a friend of Eller's, went up with other searchers in a rented helicopter to look for a place where they could access the woods where Cantellops thought Eller might be headed. They weren't even really looking for her per se, but ways to get dropped off near points of where they might pick up her trail.
Still Cantellops and the others kept scanning the woods below, looking for movement, for a sign of life.

And suddenly, there she was. She popped out into a ravine and they landed nearby. She had to wait for them as they cut a path to her, but after 17 days a few more minutes were worth it.
Eller was in a Maui hospital Saturday, surprising her doctor. Yes, she's lost 15 pounds, has a broken left tibia and they are treating her infections, but Eller looks "amazing."
"What she's been through, you'd never be able to tell," Dr. Zora Bulatovic said.

Eller's mom, Julia, beamed during a hospital news conference, telling reporters her daughter -- the sweetest and most caring person, her mother said -- had gone for a 3-mile walk May 8 on a different path than usual when she stopped to meditate then nap and then when she woke up couldn't figure out how to get back to her car.
She hadn't brought her phone, Julia Eller said as she recounted what her daughter has told her about the ordeal, and she was lost in the woods where, as mom said, "Everything looks the same. It would be very easy to get misguided."
Julia Eller said she had her moments of despair as to whether her daughter would be found but she felt in her heart that Amanda was alive.
"She's a trouper, man; she's a real warrior," her mom said. "And I had no doubt that if anybody could make it through it, it was her."
Sarah Haynes, a friend of Eller's boyfriend, told the media, that Amanda got to a place where she started to think she was going to die.

"She fought, fought, fought and then she said, 'OK, whatever you need from me.' Like, dear world, whatever this journey is for me, I'm willing to accept it," Haynes said.
Haynes said the helicopter that Cantellops discovered Eller from was paid for with some of the $75,000 from a GoFundMe campaign.

A man was found burnt beyond recognition in his car at the Ojo Military Cantonment, Ojo, Lagos.

The discovery was made yesterday, Tuesday, around 6 am, near a bus stop at a lonely part of the cantonment.

According to report, residents of the expansive military settlement woke up to the horrific scene.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

The charred remains of the man was later removed from the car by a team from the Medical center at the cantonment.

There was jubilation in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Sunday following the arrest of a suspected deadly kidnapper and armed robber, Nzube Anagwu, popularly known as Italian.

Anagwu, 35, is said to be a member of the gang of the late kidnap kingpin, Johnson Igwedibia, popularly known as Don Wanny, who terrorised the people of Imo, Rivers and Bayelsa states before he was shot dead by security personnel in 2018.

A police source told our correspondent on Sunday that Anagwu, who had been on the wanted list of the police for a long time, was nabbed by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Imo State Police Command at the Control Post roundabout in Owerri.

According to the source, victims of the suspect’s deadly activities have been trooping to the command headquarters to give testimonies about his activities.

Our correspondent gathered that other suspects in custody equally identified the suspect as a dreaded kidnapper.

Southern City News also learnt that on sighting the SARS personnel led by its Commander, Godfrey Victor, the suspect opened fire on them.

In the ensuing battle, the kidnap kingpin fell to the superior fire power of the SARS personnel.

Having sustained serious injuries during the gun duel with the police, Anagwu was rushed to hospital for treatment.

The police source stated, “SARS arrested one of the most notorious serial killers in recent time, Nzube Francis Anagwu, aka Italian, 35. He was the second-in-command to the late Johnson Igwedibia, aka Don Wanny, from Omoku in Rivers State.

“Anagwu made life unbearable for inhabitants of Rivers, Imo and Bayelsa states. As we speak, victims and relatives are coming to identify him at the station after the news broke about his arrest.

“During his arrest, he sustained gunshot injury on his left leg and multiple bruises on his face.”

The source added that a locally-made pistol with two unexpended and one expended cartridges were recovered as exhibits from the suspect.

“Because of the injuries he sustained, the suspect was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment. Investigation into the heinous crimes he committed has begun. He is our biggest breakthrough in the state in the second quarter of the year,” the source noted.

Confirming Anagwu’s arrest, the state Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Ladodo, said all the Tactical Units of the command had been activated to ensure that all criminals in the state were apprehend and made to face justice.

Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will become Anderlecht's player-manager following his departure from the Premier League champions, the defender has confirmed.

The 33-year-old, who began his professional career with the Belgian club in his home nation, returns to the First Division A side after an absence of 13 years, after he announced his exit from the Citizens.

"For the next three years, I will take up the role of Player-Manager of RSC Anderlecht," the defender wrote in an open letter to supporters. "Belgium’s finest.

"As a footballer, I was born and raised at RSC Anderlecht. Since the age of 6, I have been one with that club. A history of 34 league titles, they are second to none."

The centre-back went on to explain how the decision to return to the side where he made his debut came around, explaining a meeting that he held with chairman and owner Marc Coucke after the latter took over from the Vanden Stock family in December 2017.

"I stopped at their training grounds on my way to international duty last year," Kompany added. "Coucke, the chairman, and Sports Director Michael Verschueren asked my opinion regarding the difficult situation the club was in.

Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, Vice-Chancellor, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), on Friday said that the 100 KVA Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) gas plant recently installed in the university would meet the institution’s energy need.

Ozumba said this in Nsukka during a special convocation of the university in which 614 postgraduates were awarded doctorate degrees while Mr Godwin Emefiele, Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, was awarded honorary doctorate degree.

He said the university’s present energy need was 3 megawatts of electricity and with 12 RDF gas plant of 250 KVA, the university would enjoy 24-hour steady power supply.

“The project is to enable UNN to generate its own electricity with organic waste.

“It has been estimated that 3 megawatts is the energy need of UNN; so, with 12 250kva of RDF gas plant, the university will enjoy 24 hours electricity supply.

“This record-breaking innovation will not only transform UNN, but the country in general,” he said.

Ozumba noted that the special convocation was part of activities to end his tenure which would terminate on June 14.

He said that the CBN governor was awarded honorary doctorate degree because of his outstanding performance in the recovery of Nigeria’s economy from economic recession.

“The topic of the CBN lecture today is: “From Recession to Growth, the Story of Nigeria’s Economic Recovery.”

The vice-chancellor described Emefiele as a consummate banker and global player in the world of banking.

“Emefiele is chosen as lecturer for this topic because he is the best to tell the story of Nigeria’s economic recovery, after excruciating experience of recession,” he said.

Ozumba said that his administration had moved the university forward, adding that the institution had been listed by Google Scholar citation as the best in the country as well as one of the best in the world.

Chief Mike Olorunfemi, UNN’s Governing Council Chairman, said at the occasion that the choice of Emefiele for the honorary degree award was on merit, based on his avalanche of contributions to human development, research and knowledge, especially in banking industry.

Olorunfemi commended the outgoing vice-chancellor for numerous achievements of his administration, hoping that Ozumba’s successor would consolidate and improve on his achievements.

President Donald Trump announced Monday that he'll meet face-to-face with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit late next month amid the latest escalation in trade tensions between the two countries.
Trump predicted that his meeting with Xi will likely be "very fruitful" and said he believes China wants to reach a deal, even as he vented about China reneging earlier this month on key portions of the deal being negotiated between the two economic powers.
"We had a deal with China, it was 95% there and then my representatives...they went to China and they were told that things that were fully agreed to, we're not going to get anymore. That's not acceptable," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday. "I said, that's good, that's fine, put on the tariffs."
"I love the position we're in," Trump said.

Earlier Monday, China announced tariffs on $60 billion in US exports in retaliation for Trump's moves last week to hike existing tariffs imposed last year on Chinese goods -- and to start the process of adding duties to almost everything else China sends to the US.
Trump's comments came after his top economic adviser spent the weekend trying to defuse the trade war and demonstrate that trade negotiations between the two countries were moving forward. Those attempts to calm markets failed, with stocks falling sharply Monday after the mutual escalation.
The President has sought to spin his decision to increase tariffs on US imports from China as delivering pain to China and benefits to the US, repeatedly suggesting -- falsely -- that China would pay for the US tariff increase. While the tariffs are aimed at delivering economic pain to China, US businesses and consumers will bear the immediate financial cost of the tariff increase.

That list would include consumer goods like smartphones and toys that were left out of earlier tariff rounds, creating a heightened risk of political blowback for Trump. Even the President's chief economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, has conceded that consumers will likely bear the costs of the fresh tariffs.
"Yes, I don't disagree with that," Kudlow said in an interview on Sunday with Fox News, though he insisted that China will "suffer GDP losses" as a result of a diminished export market and shifting US investments. "Both sides will pay."
In a report to investors this week, Goldman Sachs said "the cost of US tariffs have fallen entirely on US businesses and households" and warned that US GDP would take a hit if the trade war continues to escalate.
Still, Trump on Monday said he is considering imposing tariffs on another $325 billion of Chinese imports.
"Those who think the US has leverage do not fully understand China. China thinks long-term," said Max Baucus, a former senator from Montana and US ambassador to China under President Barack Obama. "To some degree, China feels, 'Oh, well these tariffs will kick in and hurt the American people pretty soon. America is a democracy and their government is going to be forced to respond whereas all of us over in China, we're not a democracy and we can just do what we think we want to do.'"
Trump announced in December that he had made a deal with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at a dinner in Buenos Aires, but talks hit a wall last week after China, according to US officials, reneged on key components of the emerging agreement between the two sides.
The breakdown punctured several weeks of steadily rising optimism that the two sides were nearing a final agreement.
The US' top negotiators in trade talks with China -- Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer -- met with China's Vice Premier Liu He on Friday, but the talks did little to bring the two sides closer. Kudlow said Sunday there is a "strong possibility" Trump will meet with Xi at the G20 economic summit in Japan next month.

A group of iPhone owners who accuse Apple of violating US antitrust rules can sue the company, the Supreme Court ruled Monday. They claim Apple's App Store is a monopoly.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh, in the majority opinion, said that when "retailers engage in unlawful anticompetitive conduct that harms consumers," people buying those companies' products have the right to hold the businesses to account.
"That is why we have antitrust law," Kavanaugh wrote. The court's four liberal justices joined Kavanaugh in the 5-4 decision.

The Supreme Court opinion notably does not accuse Apple of violating antitrust law: It holds that consumers have the right to sue the company for monopolistic behavior, because they purchase apps directly from Apple.
The ruling could have wide implications for other tech companies that operate similarly walled-off online storefronts, said Gene Kimmelman, president of the consumer advocacy group Public Knowledge and a former Justice Department antitrust official.
"It definitely should make tech companies wonder how the antitrust laws will be applied going forward in an online platform environment," said Kimmelman.

The case stems from a 2011 class-action suit by iPhone owners alleging that by taking a 30% cut of app sales, Apple has encouraged app developers to raise their prices in response. Apple (AAPL) argued that the iPhone owners do not have the right to sue because Apple is an intermediary. But the Supreme Court held that iPhone owners have a "direct purchaser" relationship with Apple, and may sue under a precedent known as Illinois Brick.
Had Apple been allowed to set the terms of the legal fight, the court said, it would have hindered the ability of consumers to seek relief from alleged monopolists.
"Apple's line-drawing does not make a lot of sense, other than as a way to gerrymander Apple out of this and similar lawsuits," the opinion said.
Apple said it is confident it will ultimately prevail in the case now that it can proceed.
"The App Store is not a monopoly by any metric," the company said in a statement. "Developers set the price they want to charge for their app and Apple has no role in that."
The company also noted developers can build apps for other platforms, including smart TVs, rival operating systems and video game consoles. But the customers bringing the case note the iTunes App Store remains the only place Apple customers can get software for their iPhones and iPads.

The Supreme Court did not rule on the customers' likelihood of success — only that they have the right to sue. Apple argued that it was not a monopoly, rather a platform for app developers who can set their own prices. It has said that if the court allowed the case to proceed, it would disrupt the e-commerce market.

Neither Donald Trump nor Xi Jinping can afford to blink.
A personal duel between two rival presidents could ensure that the escalating trade war across the Pacific may last longer than anyone expected.
The showdown is now no longer just a confrontation between China and the US -- one a rising power challenging the long established dominance of the global economic leader. It's become a test of wills between two of the world's most powerful men, each of whom has political interests that are more likely to deepen the conflict than to quickly ease it.
Both view themselves as strongmen. Both have imposed their power on their domestic governing systems by force of will. Both have the authority to trigger global shock waves -- as they did when markets plunged following Trump's tariff hikes last week and China's multi-billion dollar retaliation on Monday.

Both see the honor of their nation at stake at a crucial moment in the history of US-China relations, as the emerging competition between two great powers becomes sharper than ever.
While Trump has said the two sides were on the verge of a deal last week before China backed out, the gulf in intention between the two giant economies will complicate future talks.
Trump -- lambasting Chinese intellectual property theft and support for state industries -- believes he has to change the global trading system itself because it is a massive ripoff for the United States.
And Trump thinks the strength of the US economy gives him an edge and the ability to pin the blame for the impasse on Xi.
"We are right where we want to be with China. Remember, they broke the deal with us & tried to renegotiate," Trump tweeted on Sunday.
Xi sees US demands as an infringement on Chinese sovereignty and has an incentive to keep globalization intact since China has profited handsomely from the status quo in a stunning 20-year growth explosion.
The Chinese leader is no keener to climb down than Trump.
"China feels it does not have to give in," Max Baucus, a former US ambassador to China told CNN's Kate Bolduan on Monday.
"Add to that, saving face is a big deal in China. President Xi Jinping does not want to appear to have backed down. I don't think Americans understand that," the former Montana senator said.
While Trump said Monday he will talk to Xi at the G20 summit in Japan in late June -- which is now looming as a massively consequential meeting -- the gaps may be too wide to bridge by then.
Trump's ideology
One reason why the dispute could go on for a while is because Trump seems to sincerely believe he is winning.
Convinced of the primacy of the healthy US economy, willing to shrug off a day's losses on the stock market and wielding his favorite tariff tool, Trump is not at all fazed.
"We're in a very good position, and I think it's only going to get better," Trump said Monday.
Trump is often ideologically supple and could turn on a dime on the dispute. But he's held deep seated beliefs about China's economic threat for decades and has long advocated a protectionist remedy. This is one issue that he's shown that he really does believe in. After all, he seems ready to gamble on the health of the US economy -- his best political asset heading into his 2020 reelection race.
The President's hawkish comments on Monday might have been an attempt to calm tumbling markets. But they also entrenched a position from which it will be hard to abandon without being embarrassed.
For now at least, before damage to the economy and consumer budgets from the deepening trade war becomes obvious, Trump may believe he will prosper politically from standing up to China.
And after accusing Beijing of "raping" US workers in his 2016 campaign, he will want to make good on his promises before 2020.
Trump is also using the China confrontation to emphasize his contrast with former Vice President Joe Biden, the apparent 2020 Democratic front-runner.
Biden complained Monday that Trump was approaching the trade spat all wrong by showing "a lot of bravado, no action."
The President however has already charged that Biden is too weak to take on Xi -- and clearly enjoys the contrast.
"China is DREAMING that Sleepy Joe Biden, or any of the others, gets elected in 2020. They LOVE ripping off America!" Trump tweeted over the weekend.
Trump's big gamble
Trump's foreign policy bets are often motivated by a desire to shore up his domestic standing. And CNN recently reported that Trump is desperate to deliver on his self-image as a master deal maker, another reason it will be tough for him to fold.
The big political risk for the President is that a prolonged trade war of attrition begins to erode US growth, devalues 401ks in a market correction and tarnishes the economic feel good factor and undermines Trump's boasts of a new era of prosperity.
Voters could tire of paying an effective sales tax on goods like iPhones, toys and foodstuffs, despite Trump's assurance that China and not US consumers foot the bill for tariffs.
US exporters will take a hit from China's tariffs and US manufacturing will also suffer.
Rick Helfenbein, CEO of the American Apparel and Footwear Association, said his industry was "beyond freaked."
"(We are) sitting around feeling like we have just bought tickets for the second sailing of The Titanic, the only difference now is we know exactly where the icebergs are," Helfenbein said on CNN.
The pain of farmers already suffering from Chinese retaliatory tariffs -- especially those in the swing state Midwest -- could also deliver Trump a 2020 shock.
Punishing Beijing could also have other spillover effects. If China is slowed, other economies, including US export markets in Asia and Europe, could suffer and hurt US jobs and prosperity.
"If we get the full throttle of all tariffs it does risk a recession," Diane Swonk, chief economist of Grant Thornton, told CNN's Brooke Baldwin on Monday.
Such a doom-laden scenario is one reason why some analysts still bet Trump will close a deal after a period of posturing.
He has, after all, frequently escalated a crisis, then stepped back -- while declaring incremental changes to an existing agreement as a massive victory for the United States.
The scenario eventually eased the crisis over the renegotiation of the North America Free Trade Agreement and offers a blueprint for a deal at the G20 should Trump's political calculation over the China trade war change.
Xi's choice
The confrontation has already revealed a truth that reflects an important geopolitical evolution: Beijing is not afraid of the United States.
Trump spent the weekend warning China on Twitter that it would be "hurt very badly" if it didn't do a deal.
By Monday morning, he had his answer when Beijing announced plans to raise tariffs on $60 billion in US goods.
Like Trump, Xi is not immune to political pressures.
Although he is the most dominant Chinese leader in decades, he cannot completely ignore complicated internal Communist Party dynamics. Chinese leaders are always wary of any changes to social conditions -- that could be brought on by a slowing economy -- that could cause public resentment and translate into political activity.
China is also sensitive to its own experience under colonialism and proud of its rise as a key regional power and global player. So there is no circumstance under which Xi could allow himself to be seen as bowing to bullying from any Western leader, let alone an American president as combative as Trump.
The importance of Chinese pride in the dispute was reflected in an article in the People's Daily, the Communist Party mouthpiece on Monday. The paper accused the US of misjudging China's "strength, capability and willpower" and of taking a "risky and impetuous decision."
Baucus said that Americans underestimated China's size, power and leverage. He also said that Beijing was playing a far longer game than Washington and, with the leadership's iron grip on dissent, could afford to absorb the painful side effects of a trade war.

WhatsApp has revealed a vulnerability in its system that could have allowed hackers access to its users' phones, with a London-based human rights lawyer possibly among the targets.
The encrypted messaging service, owned by Facebook (FB), said Monday that it had discovered and fixed the vulnerability the attackers had sought to exploit.
The hackers could implant malicious code on a victim's phone by placing a voice call to the victim on WhatsApp.
"The attack has all the hallmarks of a private company reportedly that works with governments to deliver spyware that takes over the functions of mobile phone operating systems," a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a statement.

While WhatsApp did not name the private company, a source familiar with the investigation into the attack said that company is NSO Group, an Israeli cyber company that has developed a powerful piece of malware designed to spy on its victims.
In a statement provided to CNN on Monday, NSO said, "Under no circumstances would NSO be involved in the operating or identifying of targets of its technology, which is solely operated by intelligence and law enforcement agencies."
NSO said its technology was licensed to government agencies "for the sole purpose of fighting crime and terror," adding that those agencies determine how the technology is used without any involvement from the company.
The Financial Times first reported details of the vulnerability.
Among those believe to have been targeted via WhatsApp is a London-based human rights lawyer.
On Sunday, the lawyer received two calls that John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab believes were part of the attack. Citizen Lab is an academic security research group that investigates digital threats to civil society groups and online freedom of expression.
The apparent attempt to breach the lawyer's phone was not successful, Scott-Railton said, as WhatsApp had patched the vulnerability by Sunday.
WhatsApp had reached out to Citizen Lab and a number of other groups that work with human rights defenders before publicly acknowledging the attack.

The collaboration between WhatsApp and Citizen Lab helped identify the attempted attack on the London-based lawyer. The lawyer does not want to be named, Scott-Railton told CNN.
Responding specifically to the apparent targeting of the lawyer, NSO Group said in a statement, "NSO would not or could not use its technology in its own right to target any person or organization, including this individual."

WhatsApp said while it has fixed the vulnerability the attackers were exploiting, it is also encouraging users to update to the latest version of the WhatsApp app "out of an abundance of caution." The company said it has also contacted US law enforcement.
Scott-Railton praised WhatsApp for reaching out to human rights groups to identify the attack, adding, "It's creepy to think that someone with an unknown number could give you a call and your device would be compromised."

The family of a Florida man who purportedly was drunk when he crashed his car is suing Tiger Woods, his girlfriend and his restaurant company, saying they should have prevented the man from drinking too much and driving to his death.
Nicholas Immesberger, 24, died December 10 near the community of Port Salerno -- about 20 miles from The Woods Jupiter restaurant and bar -- when he crashed his Corvette.
The lawsuit blames Woods, who owns the restaurant where Immesberger worked as a bartender, and Erica Herman, who is listed in the complaint as the general manager of business and is Woods' girlfriend, for wrongful death.

The lawsuit, brought by his parents, said Immesberger finished his shift at 3 p.m., sat at the bar drinking and died in a single-car accident about 6 p.m.

The civil complaint says Immesberger had a blood alcohol level of .256, three times the legal limit. A police report says he was driving an estimated 70 mph in a 55 mph zone.
The suit alleges employees knew Immesberger attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and had another alcohol-related crash in November.
It also says Woods and Herman knew of his disease but were drinking with Immesberger a few nights before the fatal crash. The suit alleges that the employees and management at The Woods promoted drinking by employees.
Neither Woods' agent nor a media relations representative answered CNN's requests for comment.
CNN also reached out to Herman for comment but didn't get an immediate reply.

The wrongful death suit is asking for an unspecified amount of damages. Immesberger's parents will speak to the media Tuesday, a public relations firm said.
Woods is playing in the PGA Championship, one of golf's major events, this week and is scheduled to be part of a tournament news conference Tuesday morning.

Former governor of old Anambra state, Senator Jim Nwobodo has called for Igbo presidency in 2023, saying “Nigeria will not know peace until an Igbo becomes president.”

Nwobodo made this assertion during his 79th birthday celebration which took place in Enugu, Vanguard reports.

He, however, also called on Ndigbo to come together and support any body that is doing well to represent the south-east.

He also urged the judiciary to discharge their duties with justice saying that it’s only the judiciary that can prevent the country from collapsing.

He hailed Enugu state governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who he noted has brought politicians together in the state in peace.

Speaking at the event, the president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, described Ugwuanyi as a governor whose leadership knows no boundary.

He said that Ugwuanyi does not discriminate among political parties because he treats everybody equally.


Nwodo who was the chairman of the occasion, said that Ugwuanyi would not say because one is not a member of his political party and for this reason will discriminate against him to deny him his due.

He said that since Ugwuanyi came to power, he has united the people of the state and this has brought peace to the state.

Prominent Nigerians at the event includes Chief Dubem Onyia, former minister of foreign affairs; Chief Osita Chidoka, former minister of aviation; Barth Nnaji, former minister of power; Chief Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President; Chief Frank Ogbewu, former minister of culture, amongst others.

SECRET OF A WOMAN.

At one time, a newly married young man was shouting at his 20 years old wife and his father called him aside and said to him, 'We only shout at people our shouts or threats can frighten. But not to your wife.
The way you are shouting, you are giving away your power to your wife. Your threats make her stronger. Most men believe that when a woman is threatened, she gets subdued, but women are not changed with fear.

A woman may stay quiet when a man is threatening and shouting at her but she is not sitting down inside her. She is evaluating the man's weakness and how to subdue him rather.

Cast your mind back to those days men used to beat their wives flippantly at slightest provocations, today most of those men are older and they suffering consequences

Those women their husband were beating years back are the ones enjoying the marriage with their children today, the mothers have their children's sympathy, the men are at the receiving end.

Let it become clear to men that the way into a woman's heart is not to try to threaten and subdue her. God spoke to men and said, 'Husbands, love your wife'. Do you need an elaborate explanation of this scripture? Love makes women weak. When you truly love a woman and show it, she will submit to you without qualms. But when a woman has sensed that she is just like your toy, you just want to use her or you are domineering and controlling, the spirit of rebellion takes over her. She might not physically stand on your way but she is plotting coup against you and one day, you will sit and watch her and her children force you to follow their rules or die quicker.

Almost all the great and fierce kings you know died before their wives. They lived all through their lives threatening their fellow men and wives. They were able to kill most of their strong fellow men but all the women they threatened stayed alive. Women know how to survive against men.

The 'lion' in men does not scare women or get them to submit to you, it is love that conquers a woman, not force or threats. This might subdue fellow men, but not your wife. Women naturally know how to survive pains. They can walk to the fearful serpent and make their demands. They have resilient spirit.

There are things women fear but not the lion inside men. They can submit and respect their men so foolishly that you imagine that there is no gut inside them. They have guts men don't have, love your woman into submission.
Men don't have compatible or cordial relationship with women by showing the lion inside them. God knew women before us and begged that we show love than threats. He gave men the formula, recipe for a blissful, joyous and fulfilled homes, LOVE YOUR WIFE!

This formula of loving your wife will help you win her. When a woman is loved, you break all her guts and she stays in your hands. A woman can do anything to stay with a man who is honestly in love with Her.

Talk gently to your wife, love her, pet her, don't shout at her, and you will win her and make your points!

Do not arrogantly display your weakness as a man by shouting.
